Obituary: Cecilia Ann Roark Caraway passed away peacefully on 4, 2017. She is survived by her daughter, Donna Caraway Wright and partner, Sherrie Hogan, her grandson, Matthew Wright and wife Meg, her granddaughter Meghan Moriarty and husband Matthew, her best friend and companion of more than 30 years, Mary Francis Ashmore and her sister Gloria Freund as well as the Ashmore, Freund and Caraway extended family and many friends. Ann was born 5, 1932 in Pisco, Peru, where her father Cecil Benjamin Roark, of Baton Rouge, LA, working as an agronomist for LSU, met and married Blanche Elizabeth Tripp, a tourist from Springfield, IL. The young family returned to Baton Rouge where Anns younger sister Gloria was born and they lived there, surrounded by many aunts, uncles and cousins, until Ann was in the 7th grade. Eventually the family moved to DeRidder, Louisiana where Ann excelled in school, including drama and music. She was the State Treasurer for Girls State, a summer leadership & citizenship program and graduated from high school in 1950 as Valedictorian of her class. Ann attended LSU, majoring in education with a minor in social studies, was a member of Chi Omega sorority, president of the YWCA and was capped by Mortar Board, a national honor society recognizing superior achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. She graduated from LSU in the Spring of 1954 and one week later married Darrell Caraway, who would become a pilot in the Air Force. While in Big Spring, TX for Darrells pilot training, Ann gave birth to her only child, Donna. The family lived in Texas, Michigan, Louisiana and Newfoundland, Canada and in 1965, moved to Houston. Ann taught school for those many years and after returning to Houston, she was a teacher in HISD at Montgomery, Forrester, Horn and West University Elementary Schools. In 1972, Ann completed her Masters degree in Education at the University of Houston, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Ann later divorced and in 1987, she and Mary Francis, her best friend, bought a house together in Quail Valley and Ann retired from teaching in 1993. Ann and Mary traveled extensively and Ann went to virtually every state in the USA and to three out of five continents, including returning to the country of her birth, Peru, in 2010 where she stood on the peaks of Machu Picchu at the age of 78. Ann loved history and archeology, particularly the history of Native Americans, and served as a docent for the Fort Bend Museum and developed the Childrens Archeology Program. Ann enjoyed gardening and served as President of the Quail Valley Garden Club, was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and was an experienced birdwatcher. An avid storyteller and reader, Anns reading of the Cajun Night before Christmas was a treat for all those who were lucky enough to hear her. She loved the beach and built many sandcastles with her two grandchildren as construction workers. Ann enjoyed dominoes with the Domino Dolls, her monthly bunco group and was a member of the Red Hat Society. Ann was a member of Christ Church, a United Methodist Community in Sugar Land, TX, where she sung in the choir for a period of time and enjoyed the Jubilee School Class. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, , 8, 2017 at Christ Church, located at 3300 Austin Parkway Blvd, Sugar Land, TX 77479. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to her beloved charity, St Josephs Indian School, P.O. Box 326, Chamberlain, SD, 57326. |
