Obituary: Joan Vida Harms Canton, 85, of Nederland passed away , 30, 2013. Joan was born 18, 1928 in Greybull, Wyoming to Pastor Fredrick Harms and Adeline Blair Harms. Joan taught school and school at Trinity Lutheran and was active in Trinitys Ladies Groups, choir and Mid-Week School. She enjoyed volunteering at the churchs Thrift Shop and participating in Tender Loving and Fun Bunch Seniors Group. She was also an after school Director of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. Joan is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, A.J. Canton; parents, Pastor Fredrick Harms and Adeline Blair Harms; one brother, Theodore Harms and three grandsons, Matthew and Aaron Canton and Jeffrey Naggs. Survivors include four sons, Tony Canton of London, England, Tom Canton and his wife, Vera of Beaumont, TX, Tim Canton and his wife, Jennifer of Conroe, TX, and Todd Canton and his wife, Tammy of LaBelle, TX. Grandchildren, Adam Canton, Jamie Hudson and her husband, Cody, Anthony Canton, Pauline Tran and Lacey Naggs; two great-grandchildren, Kane and Jaleigh Richard; three brothers, Dave Harms and his wife, Molisa of Wentzville, MO, Bob Harms of Jacksonville, Fla., Dan Harms and his wife, Barbara of St. Louis, MO; two sisters, Marla McVey and her husband, Jerry and Rachel Moore and her husband, Joe all from St. Louis, MO; three sisters-in-law, Florence Polite of Austin, TX, Dorothy Haws of Conroe, TX, and Mary Helen Linscomb and her husband, Larry of Buna, TX, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers Memorial Contributions may be made to United Board of Missions, Trinity Lutheran Church Choir and Youth Group or personal choice. A gathering of family and friends will be held , 2, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Grammier-Oberle . services for Joan Canton will be held at 1:00 p.m. , 3, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Arthur, with Pastor Tim Dinger officiating. Obituary: Bernice Hurwitz Cantile, founder of Menger Smart Shop, passed away on , 22, 2004. She was born on 11, 1913 in Tiffin, Ohio. An icon in the world of San Antonio fashion and a member of an elite vanguard, Bernice Cantile, using her fashion knowledge and business acumen, became a role model for many women seeking a place in the male dominated world of business. She moved to San Antonio in 1943 and opened the successful Bernice Hart Millinery store on Alamo Plaza specializing in womenÂs hats and accessories. In 1950, a move and a change in the name occurred and Bernice Hart Millinery became Menger Smart Shop and expanded to include womenÂs ready-to-wear. The store opened under the premise that every woman, regardless of financial status should be  reated like a queen. Fifty-four years later, the store is still operating under the same premise. Bernice touched many lives and was the Âhub of the wheel that kept everything together whether it was business, family or social. In a time when the working woman was not the  orm, Bernice managed to run a successful business, raise a family, enjoy a multitude of friends and be an inspiration to all she knew. She was a very  ough lady but one with a Âheart of gold and she will be remembered and missed by all she knew. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sarah Goldman and Isaac Hurwitz; her husband, Beryl Cantile; her son, Lee Cantile; her sisters, Estelle Keilson, Lillian Greenbaum, and Florence Pakula; and brother, Elliott Hurwitz. She is survived by her daughter, Sonya ÂSunny Wager and husband, Gene; grandchildren, Bryan Norris and wife, Wendy, Donna Norris, Stacey Hickman and husband, Bruce; great grandchildren, Amber Norris, Jordan Norris, and Madison Hickman; brother, Alvin Hurwitz and wife, Sherlie, and many loving nieces and nephews including Ivan and Kathy Hurwitz, Stanley Keilson and Sydnei and Allan Levin; and very dear friend, Helen Dahl. |
