Kathryns mom, Edna Alvida Peterson, was born in California was a homemaker. Kathryn had a younger sister, Martha, and a younger brother Robert who preceded her in death. Growing up the family moved very often in California and when Kathryn was in the eighth grade they moved to Kentucky. drove from California to Kentucky where her father taught at Asberry . She often spoke of this move and the trip fondly. The family moved back to Fall Brook, California and later Wilcox, Arizona where Kathryn graduated from Wilcox Union High School as valedictorian, on May 23, 1934. Kathryn attended community college for a year in Arizona. Kathryns mother heard the truth and professed while they were in Wilcox, Arizona. That changed the family forever as her dad moved the family back to Fall Brook, California and eventually left Kathryns mom. In 1936, during the Depression and the World War years, Kathryn and Martha worked as nannies. At age 19, Alma Wiebe - a sister worker - was in the area and Kathryn went to a morning meeting with her mom and made her choice. At the meeting they sang hymn number 81, Blessed Footprints of my Savior. This hymn was always very special to Kathryn. During the 1940s in Los Angeles there were many young folks in the area. Kathryn made new friends, many were in the military service as the war continued, and she also met and fell head-over-heals for Rayford: A country boy from Montana. It was love at first sight. were married on 24, 1942. Shortly after, Rayford was drafted into the Army and sent to New York. Kathryn and her mom lived wherever they could find work during the war. Kathryn and Rayfords son Charlie, was born on of 1947. A daughter Kathleen was born three years later but passed away shortly thereafter. Kathryn was very sad over the loss. One of Kathryns greatest joys was when Tharold Sylvester asked if he could use their address to get his mail. For the next 13 years he stopped by several times a week often with other workers and companions. Kathryn treasured those days and the privileges of an open home. Rayford and Kathryn moved to West Linn, Oregon in of 1986 to be near their son, his wife, and three grandchildren. Rayford passed away on 10th, 1997 after a slow decline in health. In 2006 Kathryn moved to an independent care home called The Wilsonville, where she lived in her own apartment until of 2011. Kathryn enjoyed having the workers stop by and have a meal and visit with her. She made many new friends with the staff and residents of The Wilsonville. On 17th Kathryn went to Kaiser Sunnyside Hospital, her health very fragile. On , 22, 2011 Kathryn returned to the hospital. By she was tired of the mechanical breathing help and was ready to go home. She passed away at 4:45am peaceably on morning 25, 2011. If Kathryn were here today, she would say It pays to serve Jesus. Kathryn leaves behind a son - Charlie, his wife - Nancy, and their three children: Sherolyn, married to Aaron Berdan of Yakima, Washington; Jeffrey Cloyd, married to Jennica of Salem, Oregon; and Brice Cloyd of Cave Junction, Oregon. Obituary: Maxine was born 11, 1920 in Salem, Oregon and passed away on 6, 2016 in Milwaukie, Oregon. She and her family moved several times over the years, which included The Dalles and Sublimity Oregon, Yoncalla and Woodland Washington. At the age of 10 Maxine and her two sisters, Lucile and Naomi, lost their mother (Bernice) as a result of a weakened heart from a previous diphtheria illness. Their dad, Evert Glover, was a dedicated, loving father. He made sure the girls attended church as they had done when Bernice was living. Family and friends helped with care of the 3 girls after the death of their mother. Not long after that, a fire broke out in their home (sparks from a kitchen stove) but they got out safely. Maxine's younger sister, Naomi, was staying with friends at the time. Lucile hurt her knee from jumping out the window and had issues with it for the rest of her life. lost everything in the fire except for some money that Evert had saved between 2 plates. Evert and an uncle built a one room house after the fire which had few amenities that we take for granted today. moving to Woodland a few years later, Evert had a dairy farm. Maxine recalled milking the cows and doing lots of chores around the farm. In of that year, Woodland was flooded. There was threat to the cattle, so to keep the girls safe, a friend rowed Maxine and Naomi across the Columbia River while Evert and Lucile (Maxine's oldest sister) stayed to save the farm. were able to go back to the farm later after staying with friends in Oregon. Evert married twice after Bernices death. The girls loved Christine but the marriage didn last long. He later married Hattie, whom the girls did not get along with. Maxine shared that she and Hattie actually had a physical fight over Hatties unreasonable demands. Maxine protected her younger sister and mothered her after Bernices death and during this time. Philip, Maxines brother joined the family in 1940. graduating from Woodland High School, Maxine lived and worked at The School for the Blind in Vancouver. She and her friend, Evelyn, wanted to travel. took a bus to San Francisco to see the Worlds Fair. Then they took a bus to Kansas to see Evelyn's family. During the time Maxine worked at The School for the Blind, she met the love of her life, Darrell Clover at a local dance. Darrell was drafted into the army around the time they were engaged. had planned to get married later in the year, but Darrell's folks encouraged them to get married sooner and they did marry on 1, 1940. Maxine followed Darrell to Alabama for basic training and stayed with a family there and then followed him to more training in San Luis Obispo. that, Darrell was sent on military assignment and Maxine later found out he was in the Philippines. exchanged many letters during the time he was gone (1 ½ years). During the time that Darrell was overseas, Maxine worked in The Oregon Shipbuilding Yards. When the war was over, Maxine worked at an ice cream counter in downtown Portland. When Darrell returned from the service, they began their life together. Mike was born on 12, 1947 and Gail on May 29, 1950. Maxine and Darrell were members at Moreland Presbyterian Church for 50 years, serving as Deacons for several years. She was an active member of the PTA and enjoyed the Moms club. Maxine was an Avon representative for 50 years, and loved her customers. She spent time getting to know them and they became longtime friends. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed sewing for daughter and granddaughter when they were young. Gail remembers Maxine sewing a dress in one day, for a high school dance she was invited to on short notice! Maxine loved baking, gardening and yard work, spending lots of time attending to her flowers. Maxine was always ready to bake a pie for Darrell (apple and marionberry were the favorites) or a cake for special occasions. And she spent many hours canning fruits and vegetables. When Mike and Gail were growing up, there were many family gatherings which included Lucile and her family and Naomi and her family. There were camping trips to Three Creeks Lake, near Bend, Oregon and many holiday and birthday celebrations. There was an annual trip to visit Maxines special aunt in Albany and to visit her mothers grave in Marion, Oregon. The family remembers many fun times at Aunt Bonnies home and vast property. Darrells retirement in 1980, Maxine and Darrell enjoyed several years of travel to Palm Desert and Canada in their motor home. often took beach trips and brought along grandchildren, Jennifer and Eric. Also, Hawaii was a favorite destination and they took several trips there over the years. 63 years of marriage, Darrell passed away in 2003 from congestive heart failure. Several months later, Maxine was diagnosed with colon cancer. She underwent surgery and recovered slowly, discovering that she needed a cane at the age of 84. It was just a few months later that a fire broke out in her home, from a spark in her heating pad that she used for her knee pain. Fortunately, she was not close to the heating pad when it caught fire and was able to escape, losing many items including all of her clothing and jewelry. She then moved to the Springs Retirement in 2005, and then on to assisted living. She experienced several health issues in the next few years, including a broken hip. Shortly after that time, Maxine was diagnosed with dementia as a result of some mini-strokes. She was moved to Ivy Court Senior living in of 2009. Around the time of continued... |
