Obituary: Nancy G. Cheek, 90, died on 5, 2014, in Oklahoma City. She was a lifelong resident of Oklahoma and contributor to civic and Christian endeavors in Oklahoma City. Born on 13, 1924, in Ardmore, OK, Nancy was an active leader in Ardmore High School, Randolph-Macon Womans , where she attended for one year, and the University of Oklahoma, where she was President of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and graduated in 1944 with a major in Accounting. There, she met John D. Cheek, of Oklahoma City, to whom she was married for 64 wonderful years filled throughout with adventures and travel around the world.

Since 1946, Nancy had been an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she was ordained as both a Deacon and an Elder and served extensively in the Women of Westminster and Westminster Day School. She was also a group leader over many years in the Christian Womens Club and Bible Study Fellowship.

Nancy provided extensive service to her husbands and childrens activities and schools throughout her life. She held offices in the Oklahoma Bar Association Auxiliary, the Nichols Hills School Parent-Teacher Association, and at Casady School. She was deeply committed to childrens causes, serving in local chapters of the Camp Fire Girls and Cub Scouts and contributing time and talent as a Board Member of the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Young Womens Christian Association, and the Special Program in Arts and Reading for Kids (SPARK), where she was a tutor. Her other major contributions to civic life in Oklahoma City included Board membership in the Hough Ear Institute and multiple officer roles in the P.E.O. sisterhood, Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club, and numerous garden, dance, bridge, book, and investment clubs.

Nancy is pre-deceased by her parents, Earl Q. and Lucile Roberts Gray; brother, Roger Q. Gray, of Ardmore; and husband, John D. Cheek, of Oklahoma City. She is survived by four children and their spouses: Judy and Richard Hays of Durham, NC; Earl and Louise Cheek of Oklahoma City; Cathy and Bruce Eskew of Colorado Springs, CO; and Tim and Sue Cheek of Oklahoma City. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and their spouses: Christopher and Yvonne Hays of San Juan Capistrano, CA; Sarah and Ken Coomer of Nashville; John and Rachel Cheek of Wichita, KS; Scott and Deanna Cheek of Austin, TX; Heather Cheek of Chicago, IL; William Eskew of Princeton, NJ; Matthew Eskew of Aspen, CO; Anna and Josh Gregory of Colorado Springs; Alison and Charlotte Cheek of Santa Barbara, CA; two great granddaughters, Madeleine Hays and Cheek, and two great grandsons, Calvin Hays and Sky Coomer.

Services for Nancy will be on 10, 2014, at 10:00 am at Westminster Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in her honor to Westminster Presbyterian Church Foundation or Hough Ear Institute.

Obituary: John D. Cheek died 12, 2010. He was born 7, 1920, in Oklahoma City, to James Clinton Cheek and Huldah Newton Cheek. He attended Edgemere Grade School, Harding Junior High, Classen Senior High, Westminster in Fulton, MO, and the University of Oklahoma School of Arts and Science. He received a B.A. Degree in 1942 and entered the University of Oklahoma School of Law, receiving an LLB Degree and a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1947. At the University, Mr. Cheek lettered in swimming, played polo, and was active in campus politics, serving as President of several organizations. He was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, Delta Epsilon.Mr. Cheek entered active military service as a Field Artillery Officer during WWII, serving time at Fort Sill, Fort Hood in Armored Artillery, Fort Knox, Kentucky, and overseas duty in the Luzon Invasion, Philippine Island north of Manila, together with the Occupation of Japan in Hara, Hagoya, Osaka and Kobe, Japan, in the 8th Field Artillery, 25th Division, U.S. Army. He returned to the USA in 1946. He was married to Nancy Gray Cheek in of that year.Mr. Cheek practiced Civil Law for 55 years with his brothers, William C. Cheek and James Alex Cheek, under the firm name of Cheek, Cheek, & Cheek. He was admitted to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Federal Court for the 10th Judicial District, the Oklahoma State Supreme Court and All District , and State Courts in the State of Oklahoma. He was a member of the American Bar Association and the Oklahoma Bar Association and served five years as Vice-President of the Federation of Insurance Council, U.S.A. In 2003 he was recognized by the Oklahoma Bar Association with the 60-year Membership Award.Mr. Cheek organized and operated several businesses, including City Parking , Federal Aviation Title & Guaranty Co., Federal Aviation Title Insurance Agency, Oil and Gas Minerals Associates, and Cheek Properties, LLC. He loved city property and owned much, always improving each piece with plantings and paint.He was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon, Elder, member of the Board of Trustees, first Boy Scout Master of the Westminster Boy Scout Troop, and member of the first Board of Directors of Westminster Day School. He was a Life Member of the Downtown Optimist Club, also serving as President. He belonged to the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club and Revelers and Mayfair Dance Clubs, and seldom missed and lunches with the Retired Old Men Eating Out (ROMEOs).He and Nancy were married 63 years. loved to travel and cruise the world, visiting six continents. He talked mostly of their two-month family trip in the summer of 1969 with their four children (while the courts and juries were not in session). traveled in fourteen European countries, using lawyer Fromers guide book, Europe on $5 a Day. traveled by rail, boat, and foot with suitcases in hand to many museums and cathedrals. Rule #1: Each child carries her or his own suitcase and souvenirs. His love and passion in retirement, next to his family, was the Cheek Ranch on Wilshire and Britton Roads and the north bank of the Oklahoma (North Canadian) River. Here, he raised a herd of buffalo and a commercial cow herd with OSU registered bulls.Mr. Cheek gives special thanks to Neil Dobry, Robert Powell, Clint Smith, and many friends. He shared a passion for the Court Room, Ranch, and Church life. He salutes the many District Judges before whom he practiced law for 55 years, and his fellow lawyers. He wishes to thank the St. Anthonys Hospital, the late Dr. Harry Singleton, and the Pacer Fitness for expanding his life style. Mr. Cheeks family is deeply grateful to Drs. Lybrand and Lee and the nurses who attended him in Deaconess Memorial CCU. Mr. Cheek asks for speical remembrance for his brothers Bill and Alex and his mom and dad, each of whom preceded him in death. \Tempus fugit! He is also survived by Sally Gray of Ardmore, OK, wife of his brother-in-law Roger K. Gray, with their son Keith and wife Robyn and their daughter Shannon Barker and her husband Gary.
