Obituary: Robert Charles Cousar died peacefully at home after a brief illness on May 10thh, 2015 in Ventura, California. He was 84. Bob was born on 5th in1930 in Chicago, IL. His fathers work moved them to Bergenfield, New Jersey where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Joan Bendell. In 1952 he graduated from Upsala , New Jersey with a degree in Education. He later acquired his masters of education at Hope , Michigan and UCSB. serving as a Lieutenant in the Army during the Korean War, he returned home to add to his growing family and pursue his career in teaching. teaching at Bergenfield High, greater educational prospects moved Bob and family out to Ojai, California in 1960. There he began teaching at Cabrillo Jr. High. He moved on to Buena High, becoming the Dean of Boys, and teaching leadership classes. He later added Assistant Principal to his resume at Buena High where he worked for 20 years. In 1981 he was hired for the Principals position at Ventura High School. He remained there until 1991 when he retired. His love for his work, students and educational improvement was apparent to all who worked with him. Bob found joy as a volunteer with Food Share at Community Presbyterian Church, where he was a long time active member. As a deeply faithful man, Bob was very active in his church where he served as a Deacon for many years. He loved serving and helping those less fortunate and worked with others at the Food Share program. His 24 years of retirement were spent with many dear friends at church as they gave, purchased and filled hundreds of bags with food and needed items for many residents in Ventura. He had a big heart for the disadvantaged and showed great kindness to everyone. Besides Church, one of Bobs passions was gardening. He loved tending his avocado and fruit trees and growing vegetables and flowers. He had a love of nature and birds and enjoyed watching wildlife visit his beautiful yard. He was also active with the Kiwanis Club, The Lions Club, and a member of the Teachers Bowling Association, an active bowler until age 79. Bob loved golfing with close friends, bowling, reading, gardening, woodworking, and playing bridge. He is survived by his 5 children and their spouses, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; Robert Cousar of Bakersfield, Laura Smith, husband Marlon Smith of Ventura, Jane Baradat, husband John Baradat of Ventura, Susan Cousar of Oregon, and Beth Whitcomb of Ventura. Grandchildren, Kristin Garland, husband Shane Garland, Aaron Smith, Micah Whitcomb, Kaelie Smith, Lauren Whitcomb and Cory Whitcomb; Great Grandchildren, Jordan Carney and Shane Garland, Jr. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan Cousar and his parents Frank and Bertha Cousar. His calm presence and spirit will be greatly missed. Family and friends will always remember him as a gentle, loving, and positive person.
