Obituary: Please Select The Link Below To Be Directed To The Graveside Service Of Jay P. Cooper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMIoqEzIz4A Jay Cooper has had an extensive back-ground in military service, law, education and the aerospace industry. This experience, along with a life-long passion for history, became the basis for Hammurabis Dagger, his first novel. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mr. Cooper was a World War II Merchant Marine radio operator, traversing the Pacific on an oil tanker that brought supplies to the troops. graduating the University of Pittsburgh law school, he spent a few years in private practice, then signed on as a U.S. Air Force Assistant Judge Advocate working with the Strategic Air Command and Air Force Logistics Command. While stationed in Morocco, he served as liaison to the International Court in Tangiers where he negotiated international agreements in Europe and Africa. Mr. Cooper remained in the Air Force JAG as a reservist, eventually retiring after 31 years as a full colonel. During this time his legal career continued, first as a civilian Chief of Procurement Law for McClellan Air Force Base, followed by Division Legal Counsel for Litton Industries, then Legal Counsel for Ford Aerospace and finally 17 years as a Corporate Director of Small and Minority Business for Northrop Grumman. While at Northrop he developed training courses on TQM and Negotiation Tactics and served as liaison to the U.S. Congress, testifying before the House Armed Services Committee, Senate Small Business Committee and White House Committee on Minority Business. His extensive teaching career includes graduate and under-grad-level courses in international law, business and legal ethics, and government contracts at Stanford, UCLA, Webster University, and a number of community colleges. He has been a guest lecturer at the U.S. Department of Commerce and, during his retirement years, has led seminars for Osher Lifelong Learning through the UCI extension on topics including World War II and Famous Trials in History. In addition to his JD law degree and BA in history and political science, Mr. Cooper was a member of the State Bar in Pennsylvania, Ohio and California and is a cum laude graduate of National Defense University Industrial War . He and his wife, Judy, were married 52 years and lived in Corona del Mar, California. have two children, Beth and Bryan. A Poem To Jay From His Sister Louise Sternberg The first man in my life was my big brother Jay He constantly took care of me in every way He loved to tell ghost stories to me were always funny and full of glee He went to law school and the service too He was always a soldier thru and thru Then into our lives came Judy and Lew And Jay and I laughed about things that only WE knew The patriarch of the family was our Uncle Jay His nieces and nephew loved him in every way So they e sending you off with a 21 gun salute And I can see you with that smile that is so cute Well all miss you, dear brother; you were one of a kind And youll never, ever be out of my mind! This note is from a lady you did please Your one and only schvester, Louise Louise Cooper Sternberg 28, 2015 Remembering Jay Cooper ... To dear Judy, all of Jay's family and his many friends. Some of us are blessed to have had a good friend to depend upon all of our lives. My best friend was Jay Cooper, who was always there for me from our early days in high school all the way through law school at the University of Pittsburgh. Jay was an athletic youngster. I remember his playing softball with his good friend Al Mintz and the rest of "The Bulkies" while they kicked my team's butts every week at Colfax school field. He was a good hitter and could handle himself in the field too. Jay was a strong teenager who worked as a stock boy at the Thorofare Food Market in Squirrel Hill. He seemed to easily lift heavy- loaded boxed for hours after school and weekends. This is was his way of helping his mom and dad while growing up on Darlington Road. Young Jay was always there whenever I needed advice on any issue. His sound guidance was especially amazing because Jay was part of a well-known high school comedy team called Jay Cooper and Del DeMatteo. Their hilarious routines always cracked up the students during assemblies at Taylor Allderdice High School. When Jay and I were undergraduates at Pitt, we would go out on weekends at local pubs. There, Jay found many new friends for us because of his extremely pleasant and humorous personality. Who wouldn't like him? Jay was my chief support during three years at Law School. Those three years were the most trying time of my life. Jay, Herb Sheinberg and I studied together at Jay's house. It was Jay who kept me going with his confidence. He always made me feel like I could make it, with his support. Jay keep us in stitches whenever he pulled his T-shirt up over his head, slapping his glasses over his eyes over the T-shirt and continued to recite from the textbook. That scene was classic comedy and kept us loose through the long tedious study periods. If it weren't for the patience and guidance of Jay, I would not have graduated from Law School. I also remember Jay as real movie buff, who always managed during these hectic law school days to take in one or two movies each week. I was so overwhelmed with school work I never saw a continued... |
