Obituary: Mary Catherine Contival, 82, of Morgan Hill, California, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family early in the morning on 8, 2014 following a long illness. Mary was born on 2, 1931 while her parents were visiting Manteca, California. She is predeceased by her parents William and Mabel (Johnson) Boggs. Mary along with her husband Gordon, ran The Contival Ranch and raised sheep, Border Collies and other livestock in the eastern foothills of Morgan Hill. She attended Live Oak High School, graduating in 1950 and then went on to Hartnell in Salinas. In her young adult years she worked at the downtown Morgan Hill family business The Jolly Inn. Her working career also included Morgan Hill Drug and Gilroy Foods. Mary was also a homemaker and the matriarch of her large family. She is survived by her husband of fifty-six years years Gordon Contival Sr. and all seven of her children, Linda Lego; Peggy (Danny) Hebert; Rosemary Feldman; Laura (Sam) Rockwell; Gordon Contival Jr.; Sandy (Craig) Brisendine; and Richard (Sheryl) Contival. Mary was a wonderful grandmother to seventeen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her siblings Bernice Berchem; Benton McRay; and Michael McRay. She was a woman of the 21st century. Mary enjoyed keeping up with her family with her iPad and Facebook and the universe by daily monitoring the exploration of Mars by the Curiosity rover. She helped young women be part of the Future Farmers of America at Live Oak High School in the early 60's being the first Female Farm Advisor. She was the Community leader of Morgan Hill 4-H, and as the club grew she helped found the Countryside 4-H Club. Mary served on the Santa Clara Fair Committee and was a past member of the California CattleWomen's Association. She was a member of the Redwood Empire Sheepdog Association and showed her wonderful Border Collie, Butch. A true lover of animals she had many types of pets over her lifetime. Her last dog " Chance" was her house companion for almost seventeen years. Mary was from an American Pioneering family and enjoyed tracing her roots. She made an annual pilgrimage to the 12 Original Pioneers Family Reunion, in Missouri, taking along as many family members as she could convince to attend. A long time member of First Baptist Church she also enjoyed playing the piano,music, jig-saw puzzles, hunting, fishing, reading, Nintendo Chess, and bathing in the Northern California natural hot springs. Mary was a loyal San Francisco Giants fan and also loved visiting her family log cabin in Cassel, California. Mary was a seasoned traveler and took many trips with her family, sometimes with quite large groups. The celebration of Mary's life under the direction of Johnson , Morgan Hill, California will be held on , 13, 2014, 10:00 A.M. at Johnson . Friends and family are invited to attend a reception at the Morgan Hill Grange Hall immediately following the service. Her internment will be at the Burney Cemetary, , 15, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. Obituary: In the early evening hours of 19, 2017, the beautiful music that came from the massive Petosa accordion that this very talented gentleman played for so many years, was forever silenced. Dick passed away peacefully at St. Agnes Medical with his wife by his side. Born on 17, 1930, in the family home adjacent to Kearney Boulevard, Dick grew up surrounded by a very loving family. He attended St. Alphonso's School and Church where he served as an alter boy. His time at Fresno High School was punctuated by his popularity and he subsequently attended Fresno State . Fame came to Dick early in life with the Horace Heidt Show and winning the National Grand Prize in 1948, the beginning of his extensive musical career. His 48 appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show were unprecedented and culminated in traveling to Russia with Mr. Sullivan to entertain in that country. his service in Korea, with his brother, Victor, and his cousin, Victor Antonino, Dick returned home. In 1952, he returned to his professional music career which took place at the Macombo in Los Angeles, CA, where celebrities filled the audience. In the 1950s, Dick met the beautiful Leigh Snowden, an actress for Universal Studios. were married in 1956, at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and began a wonderful marriage that endured until her death to melanoma in 1982. Dick and Leigh raised their three children, Merri, Deidre and Pete, along with Leigh's children, Cathie and Bob. All three of their children have followed in their parents footsteps enjoying careers in the music industry. Dick continued his musical career traveling extensively throughout the United States. Nothing brought him more joy than entertaining an audience, from showrooms in Las Vegas, NV, to many Italian events. The largest Italian Festa in Milwaukee, WI is celebrating its fortieth year this year and Dick entertained on the "Dick Contino" stage for 35 of those years. He had fans that have followed him from the late 1940s to the present, and many became his lifelong friends. He is survived by his wife Judy; his children; and his brothers, Victor Contino and wife Carolyn of Las Vegas, NV, and Pete and his wife Emily of Fresno, CA; two granddaughters, Covington Scaife of Arizona, and Izabel Leigh Contino of Las Vegas, NV; and an endless list of cousins. In accordance with his wishes, Whitehurst Chapel in Fresno will be the site for his private Memorial Service and Inurnment will take place at St. Peter's next to his parents, Pietro and Mary Contino, and his beloved sister, Josephine "Babe" Grado-Christman. A public Celebration of his Life is scheduled at the Copa Room on Las Vegas Boulevard, Las Vegas, NV, for the evening of , 16, 2017, where he lived and entertained for so much of his life. We will miss that magical music, his larger than life presence, his welcoming personality and the deep and abiding love he had for his family. |
