Obituary: r Cheng was born in Canton China 14, 1927 to Rachel Edna Lee and Holt Alexander Cheng, founder of Guang Hua Medical of the Sun Yat Sen University, Guangzhou, China. His childhood was affected by WWII and marked by loss, destitution, the chronic illness of his father, and service in the Chinese army. He eventually attended Guang Hua Medical where he met his wife, Lily, and trained to be a pathologist. fleeing to British Hong Kong in 1957, he immigrated as a refugee through the World Council of Churches, arriving in San Francisco in 1959. years of retraining in Pathology at the Ohio State University, and the birth of three children, he and Lily made their home in Lima, Ohio for over 20 years. He was a devoted father, cooking most family meals, driving the children to activities and attending his childrens musical and sporting events. He was also an active member of First Baptist Church of Lima, and instructor of the Power Squadron boating brotherhood, navigating the Great Lakes in regattas without a GPS. He also led 4H activities in photography and gardening, and grew a prolific backyard garden, which included uncommon Chinese vegetables. He was a great supporter of the arts in Lima, particularly the Lima Symphony and Friends of Music. He also took pleasure in training dozens of medical technologists at Lima St. Ritas Hospital, as a member of Lima Pathology Associates. An early adapter of technology, he purchased a home computer in the early 1980s, advanced computer technologies for the pathology lab, and became facile with email, video phone calls and texting, even before one of his daughters! He also meticulously recorded and catalogued family events on camera and video. In 1989, r and Lily retired to Orlando, Florida, where he entertained old and new friends. He relished his vacations at Disney and the beach with his older grandchildren, and enjoyed learning ballroom dancing, tennis and golf. the passing of his wife in 1993, he spent time in San Francisco, where he began intensively researching for the biography of his father. The culmination of his work was the celebration of Holts life in 2003 at the San Francisco Medical Society. He presented the 400 page publication to the alumni and school at Guang Hua Medical s 100th anniversary in 2008 in GuangZhou, China, accompanied by many family members. He led and supported the Guanghua Alumni Association in the U.S. He was devoted to his six grandchildren, who were the center of his life. He felt compelled to share appropriate Chinese proverbs for almost any situation. He travelled widely, in order to attend performances, school activities and graduations for all his grandchildren. He loved being with children and spoiling them, especially during the Orlando years, where even adult visitors were gifted with one of hundreds of stuffed Mickey Mouses. He always gave hope and encouragement to any young children he met. r was patriotic and loved the United States for all its opportunities and encouraged anyone looking for a better life, including students, relatives, children, and friends. Always grateful and charitable, he gave regularly to innumerable charities, including Red Cross, Salvation Army, churches, Ohio State, and his medical school. His lifelong passion was rooting for the Ohio State Buckeyes! He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lily Wai Ling Lee Cheng; sisters Rita Lam and Gladys Tom, and brothers Kingsley, Albert, and Teddy Cheng. He is survived by daughters Suzan Cheng and Iris (Dan) Cheng Uri; son Rex (Linda) Cheng; and grandchildren Austin, Rachel, Marissa, Ryan, Leann and Lauren, sister. Gilda Li, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Gratitude is given to all of them for making his life from beginning to end an adventure supported by a loving family. The family wishes to thank Dr. Jesse Dohemann for his decades of medical care. Special thanks also to all his caregivers, especially Aultman Hospice of Canton, Ohio, his nurse Chris Jurovcik, and aide Alan Dunnell; and caregiver Judy Gallion who made his last days peaceful and comfortable.
