Obituary: My Texan Daddy, Ray Dudley Coles Spirited Youth, Loving Husband, Daddy and Papa, Loyal Friend, CPO, Provider LOOK! Over yonder you all, see a young boy, with thick brown hair, his face and arms tanned by the Texas sun. He was a young James Dean in the making. He was born with adventure in his heart, not a streak of fear in his being. He was full of zeal and had dreams of his future as big as the State of Texas. I see now a handsome teenager. At seventeen he bravely joined the United States Navy. He served God and with honor, integrity, loyalty, virtue and lots of sweat. I see, a young man already grown into a Leader. He had an ethical work code. He never asked anyone to do what he would not do himself. I see a man of many friends. He delighted in his friendships, ready to help, play or give them the shirt of his back. Whoever was willing he took under his wing, and taught them the ways of a Seabee. I see a confident and charming soldier, who sailed the sea to London. There he crossed paths with a beautiful British woman, His big Texan heart was set ablaze. He strutted in his western boots to woo this proper British woman, to no avail. I see the man with a plan. He befriended the British woman's mother. Within six weeks the American man and British woman wed. Not asking permission to wed, the honeymoon was in the brig. I see, the new proud husband bringing his new blushing bride to America. It was a winter's motorcycle ride, half-frozen, they raced to their new Virginian home. Without even a hint, his wife's world was turned inside out and upside down. I see, a Daddy with three beautiful daughters: LaDonna, Thelma and Tina. He instilled in them the true meaning of family, one that always stays together. He showed us true love. There was nothing they could do that would make him love them less. tested and tried him, as he did them, teaching them to stretch themselves. I see, him become 'Papa' to his wonderful grandchildren, Christopher, Devin and Kinsey, whom he loved unconditionally, In each one, he sees only their goodness and potential. each carved their own special place in his heart. I see a grieving husband let go of his dying wife. For years he made a brave stand for his daughters and grandchildren. He put on his poker face, yet inside he was lost. I see a, Great-Papa's hand rest on Jill's belly. He laughed when his great- granddaughter kicked him. Chris announced, "I will be a daddy soon!" and he cried. I see, a very physically fit man battled Alzheimer's for 25 years. He put up a good fight, just when it seemed he could fight no more, he fought harder. I see a man who knew the fight was over and was ready to go home to heaven. At his side until the end was Devin. She bravely and tenderly cared for him. Newly married, she knew Erik understood. I see, a man who heard his Savior Jesus Christ, call him home. He took the hand of Jesus Christ and is lead to heaven, finally free from his disease.
