Obituary: History of Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary In 1962, Hillcrest Memorial Park opened to the public. Our first lawn was Lakeview Lawn including Lullaby Lawn for infants. Hillcrest Memorial Park features beautiful sculptures, each hand carved in Italy from Carrara marble, further enhancing the parks beauty. The Holy Family was carved especially for Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum and is an exquisite example of the original memorial sculptures seen throughout the park. In 1965, Hillcrest Memorial Park added the mortuary to its park to better serve families as a full-service location. From 1965 until the mid-1990s, John and Betty Bartel and their family, with associate owners, owned and operated the Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary. In 1985, Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary was purchased by Service Corporation International, and the Bartel family continued their involvement with the local community, service clubs and churches as they served the families of Bakersfield and its surrounding cities at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary. The Bartels were the founders of the parks popular Easter Sunrise and Memorial Day services. About Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary has served Bakersfield and its surrounding area families since its founding in 1962. Obituary: Jon Cnossen, 92, loving husband of Gertie, went to be with the Lord on 5, 2010 at his home in Sierra Village Christian Retirement in Visalia. Jon was born 10, 1918 to Roy and Gertrude Cnossen in Friesland, The Netherlands. His family immigrated to the United States when he was 5 years old. Most of his childhood was spent in Southern California but the few years that his family lived on a farm on the plains of South Dakota were a favorite time for him. Riding his horse to the one room schoolhouse was a fond memory for Jon. Jon was a WWII veteran who served with the Princess Irene Brigade of the Netherlands. He fought in France, Belgium, and Holland, taking part in the Market Garden to help liberate his native land. Toward the end of the war, he became a Sergeant to 8 young men and was united with them 30 years later after attending many reunions of the Brigade. When the war ended, Jon returned to Southern California, fell in love and married Gertrude Van Dyk in 1946. being blessed with three children, they moved their family to Escondido, CA in 1961. Then in 1991, they made the move to the San Joaquin Valley. Jon was always known to be a hardworking, conscientious employee. He worked in the dairy industry most of his life including 25 years as a salesman for Coast Grain Co. He shared many cups of coffee and good conversation with his customers. Later in his life, he enjoyed helping as a bus driver and custodian at Calvin Christian School in Escondido, CA. His smile, good humor, and enjoyment of handing out Double Bubble bubblegum greatly endeared him to all the students. moving to the SJ Valley, he kept busy as a handyman and gardener for the Wim and Ellie Griffioen Dairy. Over the years, Jon was asked to be the MC for many weddings and anniversaries. The amazing amount of jokes that he remembered and told so well entertained many guests. As a member of Toastmasters, he received numerous awards for his speeches. Jon and Gertie shared an enjoyment of watching high school sporting events that started when their son Jon, Jr. played for Escondido High School and continued with their watching their grandkids and many other students at Central Valley Christian School in Visalia until right before Jons death. are known as very loyal CVC fans. also loved to travel and were able to visit most of the states in the US and many foreign countries too. especially enjoyed their many trips to The Netherlands. Jon loved the Lord and found it enjoyable to attend church his whole life. He believed and was grateful to say, "Saved by Grace. He always had a kind and warm smile, a humbs up and a joke for the people he met. He enjoyed family get togethers, coffee time with friends, card games with Sierra Village friends and family, and rides out into the country side. Jon is survived by his wife Gertie of 63 years, his sister, Tena Godinho of Visalia, his daughter Annetta of El Paso, TX, his son Jon Jr. of Vista, CA and his daughter Geri De Jong of Tulare, CA. He will be fondly remembered by his 8 grandchildren , 11 great grandchildren , and many others who called him Grandpa Jon, Papa, or Pake. a family burial at Visalia , a memorial service will be held at 11:00 am , 12 at First Christian Reformed Church at 1030 S. Linwood Ave. Visalia where Jon and Gertie are members. Visitation will be held at Millers Memorial Chapel at 1120 W. Goshen Ave. Visalia on , 11 between 1 and 4 pm.
