Obituary: While it is possible to receive good counsel from a wide circle of family and friends, few could do it with the skill and aptitude of Marina Parris Chiotellis. She had a true talent for helping others reach their full potential and brought out the best in those who sought her help. Marina was a forward-looking woman whose personality was filled with empathy toward everyone she met. She could be quiet and reserved, but her style of communication was authentic and direct. An excellent communicator, Marina was a master at using imagery when she explained her ideas and concepts. She was a woman that spoke her mind and seemed to have an endless supply of innovative concepts and strategies for how to help those around her. Her sensitivity, kindness and generous attitude made her a wonderful friend for all who knew her. Marina was born on 27, 1935 in Savannah, Georgia. She was the daughter of Nicholas and Angela Parris. Ever since she was a young child, Marina showed a deep concern for others. She was a giving and caring individual, ethical and full of integrity and warmth. Because fellowship was so important to her, Marina promoted harmony with her sibling. She was raised with a younger sister, Elpie. Marina was something of the family diplomat. She helped to settle problems and conflicts and kept the family running smoothly. Her father passed away when she was 13 years old, and she had to take on a lot of responsibility. She began working to help support her family, and was ultimately unable to attend college. As a young girl, Marina interacted well with other children. She was very helpful towards others. She was an independent person who had a vivid imagination. Marina had a number of interests in her youth and was an active child. She loved basketball and bowling, and was in the Maids of Athens. In her spare time she liked playing the piano. A good student who was enthusiastic about learning, Marina was considered by many to be a high achiever. She graduated from Savannah High School in 1952. She enjoyed some classes more than others, having favorite courses and teachers. Marina was romantic, even poetic at times. She was completely devoted to family and friends, and was able to show her emotions without going overboard about it. On 17, 1966 Marina exchanged wedding vows with Nick Chiotellis at St. Pauls Greek Orthodox Church of Savannah, Georgia. All who knew her would agree that there was a certain kind of magic in how Marina was able to bond with her children. While she could be a firm disciplinarian, she could also fill the role of being a collaborator with her kids. Marina was always a mentor who helped her family reach its full potential. Marina was blessed with 2 children. She had two sons, Nick and George. were also blessed with three grandchildren, Samantha (6), Niko (5), and Jordan (4). Marina loved her family and especially adored her grandchildren. As an imaginative and inventive person, Marina was comfortable showing her creative spirit. She enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. Once Marina took on a new project, she saw it through to its completion. Her favorite pursuits were Greek music, surfing the internet, crossword puzzles, and geneology. Marina loved researching geneology and had done so for many years. She had dozens of full binders and notebooks, and hundreds of photos and documents in English, Greek, Italian, Arabic, and Hebrew. She was content to enjoy her hobbies alone but was also willing to share her interests with others. Marina was one who put forth her best effort in every aspect of her life, and that carried over to her participation in sports as well. Her sense of diligence inspired others and in turn drew best efforts from her teammates. Marina was also something of a sports fan and enjoyed following her favorite events whenever she got the opportunity. Top on her list was baseball, especially the San Francisco Giants. Marina was a woman with clear convictions and high principles, and her faith was important to her. She was an inspiration to many people who recognized her sense of commitment and esteem for others. She was a member of St. Basil the Great Greek Orthodox Church. Marina was a lover of animals and cherished her pet, FloJo, a Husky-Lab mix. were best friends for 13 years. Marina passed away on 2, 2009 at home in San Jose, California (Almaden Valley). Marina fought a brave battle against cancer for many years. She is survived by her husband Nick, sons George and Nick, and grandchildren Samantha, Niko, and Jordan. Services were held at St. Basils Great Greek Orthodox Church in San Jose, California. Marina was laid to rest in Greek Orthodox at Oak Hill Memorial Park in San Jose, California. Though she could be a private person at times, Marina was always able and willing to help others in need. She was so in tune with others that she often seemed able to read their minds. Marina carried with her an almost mystical sense of life. She was a person who was highly original in her thinking and used metaphors and symbols to describe many aspects of her life. A poetic, intuitive eacher, Marina Parris Chiotellis shared herself freely and family and friends will remember Marina for the strength of her convictions. |
