Obituary: Susie Mae Childs (fondly known as "Nuna"), was born on May 26, 1920 in Vance, Alabama as the youngest of seven children. Her parents, Fred Smith and Fannie Williams (Dent) and her siblings preceded her in death. She spent her early childhood in Vance and later moved to Library, Pennsylvania where she completed high school. The family moved to Oklahoma where Susie met the love of her life, John Leurean Childs. were married on 24, 1939 and remained together for 59 years until Johns death in 1999. From this union there were seven children. The family moved to California in 1948 and settled in Oakland, California. Susie continued her education by attending nursing school at the East Bay School of and the Fairmount School of to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She was employed as a private nurse and eventually became a nurse on staff at Kaiser Hospital where she worked for 35 years. Susie was a member of Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland California. She was an active member of the usher board, the Mary Circle and the choir and maintained her family as active participants in the church activities. When John and Susie moved to Hayward, California in 1966, they joined Wesley United Methodist Church where they remained active members until Johns illness prevented their continued attendance. Susie had a love for life and people. She especially loved gospel music, big band jazz, reading, fishing, playing bid whist, rummy, dominoes, growing roses and family gatherings. Susie enjoyed sewing and embroidering for her family and later in life learned to crochet. She also enjoyed traveling in their motor home and spending time at their vacation home in Clearlake, California. Susie had a love for beautiful things and, because of this passion for sparkle and bright things, John sometimes referred to her as his little blue-eyed Jaybird. Susie was preceded in death by her granddaughter Kathy Marie Bivens and by her great-grandson Miles Julian Stark. She leaves to cherish her memory her children; Yvonne V. Conte of Pittsburg, California; a son John Leurean Childs Jr. and his wife Druscilla Childs of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Frances L. Stark and her husband Leotis Stark of Union City, California; daughter, Cherry Harris of Oakland, California; a daughter, Joyce Taylor of Antioch, California; a daughter, Donna Smith and her husband Charles Smith of Antioch, California and a daughter, PK Childs of Union City, California. She also leaves 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives, friends and loved ones. |
