Obituary: Armand E. Charest, 89, passed away 3, 2014 in Long Beach, CA. Armand was brought in to this world on May 7, 1925 in the Charest family kitchen in Manchester, NH. He was the eighth of ten children of Joseph and Emma Charest. He spent his boyhood days racing soapbox derby and building model airplanes for which he won many prizes. So great was his passion for aviation that to answer his countrys call, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force at 17. His knowledge and dedication through the early part of World War II earned him the rank of lieutenant and bombardier on B-17s. As part of the European theatre, Armand was stationed in Foggia, Italy. As a devout catholic he made his way to the nearby foothills of San Giovanni Rotunda. There he went to mass and received communion from St. Padre Pio. Padre Pio became a great spiritual influence to Armand throughout the years. While in Ohio for training he met Mary Lee Pursifull of Pineville, KY. Capt. Charest returned to his girl back home after completing 25 missions as a bombardier on a B-17 in the 15th Air Force. were married May 9, 1946. graduating from the University of Cincinnati in 1952, where he studied aeronautical engineering on the GI Bill, Armand and Mary Lee moved their growing family to Southern California. There he began a long career in aeronautics working for Douglas Aircraft Co., Aerojet, and Northrup Grumman, while also serving as a Major in the USAF Reserves. Armand worked on projects instrumental to the Apollo missions and the B-2 Spirit, or Stealth Bomber. While Armand spent much of his time with the Knights of Columbus, The Holy Name Society, coaching his son in little league and his daughters in bobby sox, and taking his family on cross-country road-trips, he is best remembered for his selfless devotion to God and his family. Armand is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Lee, their seven children: Kathleen Charest, Maureen (Sam) Holmes, Debbie (Frank) Tocco, David Charest, Shauna (Gary) Bretzmen, Lisa (Chris) Peters, and Amy (Mark) Talens, 18 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and sisters Estelle Sullivan of Rochester, NY and Leonie Horeanopoulos of Massachusetes.
