Obituary: Daniel (Dan) Norman Chappelear was born the youngest son of Charles William Chappelear and Felonise Weiser Chappelear on 1, 1935 in Dayton, Ohio. The Chappelear family moved from Dayton, Ohio to West Hartford, Connecticut where Dan attended Beach Park School, Plant Junior High and graduated from Loomis School in 1952. Following high school, he studied Metallurgy at the Colorado School Mines and then transferred to the University of Michigan earning a B.S.E. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Dan was a member of Beta Theta Pi (fraternal organization), Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers, and Society for Advancement of Material & Processing Engineering. He held a United States Coast Guard Operators License - Passengers for Hire in addition to a real estate license. Dans thirty-nine year career in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering included positions with Humble Oil; Miami Shipbuilding Corporation; Sparkman and Stephens; The Boeing ; and Rosenblatt & Son before he joined Lockheed Missiles & Space - Ocean Systems in 1967. He retired from Lockheed Martin in 1998. During his career, Dans talents and skills were used in research and design of offshore drilling barges and platforms, wood, steel and aluminum vessels, hydrofoil vehicles, deep submergence search vehicles, ocean mining machinery, oil recovery systems, military surface effect ships, air cushion landing craft for the US Navy and computer programs for naval architecture, robotic maintenance of satellites and undersea vehicles. He kept the postal service busy with addresses in Florida, New York, Washington, Virginia, Hawaii, and California. Dan met his wife Katherine in San Francisco, they married in Palo Alto and established their long-term residence in Emerald Hills, California. Travels included Hawaii, Japan, Jamaica, Bahama Islands, England, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, France, Monaco, West Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Wales, British West Indies, Canada and Mexico. Dan enjoyed sailing, snow and water skiing, tennis, horseback riding (English and Western), reading, lively political discussions and spending time outdoors with family and friends. Family, friends and his medical providers often referred to Dan as a mellow fellow. He was curious, quiet, caring and generous. He approached life with a sense of humor and just a touch of Connecticut etiquette. His bright blue eyes and ready smile will be missed by all who knew him. Daniel is survived by his wife of forty years Katherine Bradshaw Chappelear, Emerald Hills, California; nephew Christopher Chappelear, Maplewood, New Jersey; nephew Thomas Chappelear, Kensington, California; niece Kimberly Stover, Kent, Washington; nephew Shawn Bracken, Coral Springs, Florida; great nieces Eleanor and Ella Chappelear; great nephews Benjamin, Matthew and William Chappelear and Jackson Bracken. His father Charles William Chappelear, mother Felonise Weiser Chappelear and older brother David Conrad Chappelear proceeded him in death. A summer 2017 Celebration of Life is planned to honor his memory and wish him fair winds and following seas.
