Obituary: Jay Crawford, 94, of Vale, went to his eternal rest on , 1, at Autumn of Drexel following a period of declining health. He was born in Rutherford on 15, 1921, a son to the late Dillard and Hattie E. Crawford. Mr. Crawford served his country proudly and honorably in the United States Army during World War II. While serving in the Normandy invasion in the European Theater, he and a fellow soldier destroyed a German tank which had pinned down his unit, earning him the Silver Star for valor. Mr. Crawford enjoyed a long career as an owner/operator, long distance truck driver. He was known and appreciated as a hard worker and a dedicated provider for his family. In addition to his parents, Mr. Crawford is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Clairene Bridges Crawford; a son, Thomas Reid Crawford; brothers, Ransom and Fred Crawford; and four sisters, Ensley Byers, Ethel Dalton, Mary Byers, and Leona Wilson. Survivors include four sons, David Crawford and wife Teresa of Shelby, James Jimmy Crawford and wife Joann of Taylorsville, Ronnie Crawford, Danny Crawford and wife Doreen, all of Hickory; one daughter Susan Edwards and husband Jay of Asheboro; nine grandchildren, Kimberly Kim Collie, Tony Crawford, Tommy Crawford, Douglas Doug Edwards, Candace Ollis, Cameron Crawford, Michael Crawford, Tyler Crawford, and Kathy Forbis, sixteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 4, 2015 from 2:00PM to 3:00PM at Heritage Service . A funeral service for Mr. Crawford will be held 3:00 PM 4, 2015 in the Chapel of Heritage Service with the Rev. Shane Ramsey officiating. A chapel service will be held at 12:00 PM 5, 2015 at the State Veterans in Black Mountain, NC. Military honors will be presented by the Caldwell Honor Guard and the North Carolina National Guard. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Charles George Veterans Affairs Medical in Asheville, and to the staff of Autumn of Drexel for their attentive care of Mr. Crawford. Special thanks also go to Jane Workman, Rae, his coffee drinking buddy, Donna Black, and Doreen Crawford, caregivers who enabled Mr. Crawford to remain at home for many years. His medium varied between painting, sculpture, woodworking and music. He is survived by his mother, Deborah B. Crawford of Monroe; his father, Gregory A. Crawford and stepmother, Lynn Crawford of Waxhaw; his brother, Rembert Crawford and family; and his sister, Brooke Crawford and family. Michaels light will continue to shine through his family and friends. He will always be truly missed.
