Obituary: JOHN DOUGLAS CORPENING, SR. John Douglas Corpening, Sr. 77, of Hickory, NC passed away, , 9, 2010 at Catawba Valley Medical . Mr. Corpening was born in Caldwell to the late Fred Henry and Amy Reid Corpening. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by first wife, Thelma Dula Corpening; three brothers, Cletton, Clyde, and Fred Corpening; four sisters, Julie Ramsey, Dorothy Dula, Louise Harshaw, and Shirley Moore. Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Mae Mull Corpening of the home, three sons, John, Jr., and Aaron Corpening both of Lenoir, and Calvin Corpening of Baltimore, MD.; four daughters, Irma Patterson and husband, Arthur of Morganton, Jeannie Hardy and husband Alfounza of Marion, Lynn Powell and husband Terry of Lenoir, and Dorthea Honer and husband Darren of Granite Falls; three stepsons, Terry Dula of Hickory, Benny Dula of Hickory, and Todd Dula of Conover; two stepdaughters, Sandra Horne and Gloria Perkins, both of Hickory; two brothers, Samuel Reid and wife Clara of Lenoir, and Russell Corpening of Winston Salem, NC; four sisters, Sharon Logan and husband Roger, Carolyn Witherspoon and husband James, Zelma Nelson, Mary Armstrong and husband Wes all of Lenoir, NC; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren also surviving and a host of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held , 14, 2010 at 2:00 PM in Pendrys Chapel with Elder James Sadler, Jr., Elder B.O. Boatwright, Jr., Elder M. Bost, and Elder T. Harvell, Reverend Venoy Pearson, and Reverend Sharon Logan officiating. Burial will follow at the Corpening Town . The family will receive friends , 13, 2010 from 6:00 until 8:00PM at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Larry Dula, Todd Dula, Julian Honer, Thomas Burgess, Tim Witherspoon, and Dwayne Harshaw. Obituary: Janet Smith Corpening, 82, passed away on , 29th at Brighton Gardens after a long struggle with dementia. Janet was born 3, 1928 to John and Mary Browning Smith in Washington, North Carolina. She graduated from Gibsonville High School and received a BA in social science, religion and biology from Flora McDonald (now St. Andrews Presbyterian ) in 1949. She later returned to school to receive a Masters in Education from Appalachian State University. Janet lived a long and full life. Her career centered around helping children for over 40 years. Over the years she taught junior and senior high students at the Bain School in Charlotte, Durham High School, Brogden Junior High in Durham, Wiley Junior High School, The er , and Mt. Tabor High School. She was especially proud of the high HQ and academic teams that she coached at Mt. Tabor. Early in her career she worked as a child welfare worker in Hampton, SC and as Director of Christian Education at First Presbyterian Church, Lancaster, SC. Through the years, Janet volunteered for many community organizations. her marriage to Julius H. Corpening in 1952, she served as a pastors wife for 20 years in Hampton, SC and Durham, NC. She was proud of her work in Durham to develop an afternoon tutorial program (operated by 35 volunteers) to include children of all races in the 1960s and of her other community service work in Durham and Winston-Salem during the 1960s and 1970s. her retirement, Janet enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a trained docent at Reynolda House, often guiding school children around the museum and discussing or writing about the art work. She could often be seen walking the trails surrounding Reynolda House and admiring the flower gardens. She was a breast cancer survivor and a pink broomstick volunteer for Cancer Services. She was a member of the Friendship Class at Knollwood Baptist Church and taught School for many years. She was preceded in death by her sister, Elsie Smith Hinshaw. She is survived by her three children: J. H. Corpening II (Donna) of Wilmington, David J. Corpening (Laura) of Charlotte and Jan C. Kelly (Mike) of Lewisville. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Brad Corpening, Katie Corpening and Paul Corpening of Wilmington, Erin Haselkorn (Adam) of Boston, Daniel Corpening of Durham, Patrick Kelly, Annie Kelly and William Kelly of Lewisville. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Knollwood Baptist Church, 380 Knollwood Street in Winston-Salem on , 23 at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. She has been interned at the memorial garden at Knollwood.
