Obituary: Barbara Norris Cloninger passed away on 19, 2016 at Abernethy Laurels after a lengthy illness. Born 25, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Butler Norris and Mary Izell Rhodes Norris. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy Eugene Duncan, and her second husband, Dr. Charles Cloninger, and a son in-law, Mark Carter. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Dana Carter of Sherrills Ford; son, Stephen Duncan and wife, Linda of Maiden; brother, Robin Norris and wife, Mary of Georgia; sisters, Betty Jo Gordon and husband, Benny of Georgia, Meg Economy and husband, Dean of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Jenny Zimmerman and husband, Chris of Barnardsville, NC, Chris Duncan and wife Sharlie of Huntersville, NC; great-grandchild, Hattie Grace Wood of Barnardsville, NC. Barbara was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne and enjoyed teaching at Newton-Conover Middle School. Barbara was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church in Newton. She served as a volunteer at Catawba Valley Medical as her desire was always to help others. She was an avid fan of UNC basketball and NASCAR. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on , 27, 2016 in the Chapel of Drum in Conover with Pastor David Hamlin officiating. The family will receive friends after the Service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be given to Abernethy Laurels, 102 Leonard Avenue, Newton, NC 28658. Obituary: Lyman, SC - Alma Gardner Cloninger, 93, passed away May 18, 2013 peacefully at home surrounded by her family. A native of Gastonia, she was the daughter of the late William and Martha Gardner. Mrs. Cloninger was the oldest living member of Loray Baptist Church where she was an active member of WMU. She retired from Matthew Belk. She is survived by her children, Dennis Cloninger and wife Sally of Gastonia, Teena Barnes and husband Woody of Lyman, SC, Gay Sprankle and husband Marty of Kailua, HI; grandchildren, Lisa Cloninger and partner Kathleen Smith, Kelly Fijalkowski and husband Anthony, Laura Taylor and husband Mike, Jake Beam, Kyle Barnes and wife Sara, Alicia Menas and husband Jeff; 8 great grandchildren; niece, Sylvia Gardner Lewis; long term caregivers, Carolyn Wilson, Stacey Waters, Denise Brannon, and Angie Yarbrough. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Dennis B. Cloninger Sr.; sisters, Pearl Gardner, Ruth Gardner, Verlyn Hall; brothers, Bill Gardner, Ray Gardner; and great grandson, Adam Boyd Taylor. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 pm at Loray Baptist Church with Dr. Kent Cranford and Rev. John Bridges officiating. Interment will be at Hollywood . Obituary: Adrian Shuford Cloninger 1922-2015 Newton – Adrian Shuford Cloninger, age 93, passed from this life to eternal life on 9, 2015. He was born in Catawba on 22, 1922 to the late Shuford and Flossie Cline Cloninger In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brother, Lamar Cloninger Adrian graduated from Maiden High School in 1939. While a Junior at Lenoir Rhyne , he was drafted into the Army in 1943 and sent to basic training at Ft. Hood, Texas, and then was assigned to a tank destroyer battalion. His first duty was the Philippines in the South Pacific. The next tour was Japan as part of the Army of Occupation. WWII, Adrian returned home and finished college at Lenoir Rhyne in Hickory, NC. He reentered in the Army at Ft. Benning, Georgia. His continued career of 31 years in the Army included the following; Tour assignment again to Japan. In 1950 Adrian entered with the first unit into Korean War. Fort Jackson, SC trained officers for the Korean War – Munich, Germany; 7th Army NCO Academy – Ft. Benning, Georgia, where he completed his U.S. Army Advance Course. Ft. Bragg, NC; the 82nd Airborne Division. Select as a student for the Command and Staff , Quetta, Pakistan. Assigned to SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) Paris, France. Ft. Monroe, Virginia; Continental Army Command; Second Tour to Korea; Battalion Commander on the DMZ (demilitarized zone); Ft. Belvoir, VA; U.S. Army Engineers School – Promoted to Colonel. Assigned the U.S. Army Inspector Generals Office, Washington, D.C.; Second Tour to Istanbul, Pakistan as Department of Defense Representative. He finished his career as Headquarters Commandant at Ft. Gordon, Georgia. Retired 28, 1977; Special Awards earned: Combat Infantrymans Badge; Master Parachutist Badge; Army Commendation Medal w/ 3 oak leaf clusters; Legion of Merit w/ 3 oak leaf clusters.
