Obituary: Anna Jo Evans Carratello., born and raised in Sumter, SC passed away peacefully , 11,2016. Anna had a strong will to live, surviving a late-life debilitating stroke with grace and optimism. She was 92. graduation from high school in Asheville, NC, she worked with the Veterans Hospital there, and during WW II, Anna met her future husband, Philip F. Carratello at a USO dance. When he returned from Germany after the war, they married and settled in Greensboro. Anna worked as a secretary a few years until her first son Michael was born. In order to be with her children, she changed directions and went to work in the Florida Street Baptist Church Nursery, taking care of her own and 40-50 more children. She was asked to become Director of the Church Nursery and held that position several years until it was closed. Establishing her own business, she and her mother, Mrs. Mary Alice Evans bought two adjacent neighborhood houses and equipped them with toys, arts and crafts, story books, musical instruments and playground equipment for their new Glenwood Day Nursery. and the staff aised many children there from baby-hood thru elementary school and remained friends with them and their parents long after. In her third career, Anna worked in the service of Guilford with DSS, and in the offices of the Manager and the Architect where she developed many friendships. She was empathetic and helpful and many people sought out her thoughtful and logical objective opinion, seeing all sides. Retiring in 1989k she happily stayed home with Phil, her husband of 58 years, gardening together and staying abreast of local and national politics. Anna was preceded in death by her parents, Tracy Evans, Sr. and Mary Alice, husband Philip and her grandson Alex. Surviving are her children; Phyllis Jordon of Roswell , GA and Mike Carratello (Pat) and Scottie Carratello (Rick), wonderful granddaughters, Jenny, Rosie and Olivia Carratello and her loving brother whom she adored, Tracy Spencer Evans, Jr. (Edna) and nieces and nephews from Virginia and New Jersey. Anna had a loving extended family of half brothers and sisters from upstate New York; Sara Ann, Violet, Harvey, Dot, John, Ronnie, Marion, Kathy, and Serena. She leaves behind her loving friend and companion, Charm Fluker. services will be held on , 12:00 noon at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel with burial to follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on at the funeral home. |

Obituary: Col. Valentine E. Carrasco, USA (Ret), beloved husband of Karin L. Paar-Carrasco, passed away on , 13th, 2015. A native of New York, Col. Carrasco was born on 14th, 1929. Val earned a Master's Degree in Procurement and Contract Management, Florida Institute of Technology; a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, University of Missouri at Rolla; studied Architecture at Pratt Institute; and did undergraduate work at Fordham University.He was also a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff and the Engineer Basic and Advanced courses. Val was a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Wisconsin; a Lifetime Certified Professional Contracts Manager; a Fellow of the National Contract Management Association, and recipient of the coveted Blanche Witte Memorial Award, awarded annually to that individual contributing most to the Contract Management profession. Val was listed in "Who's Who in the World" for 6 years; taught at both the university post-graduate and undergraduate levels in St. Louis; and published articles in the Bureau of Business Practice and other periodicals. He also received the "First Shuttle Flight Achievement Medallion" for his support of the first manned orbital flight of the Space Shuttle. Val was a Mason of many years in good standing and was proficient in languages, speaking German, Spanish, Italian, and a smattering of Vietnamese, French, and Russian .Val entered the United States Army Corps of Engineers in 1953 and progressed rapidly to the rank of Full Colonel before retiring in , 1981. While in the Corps, Val served as the: Commander, Defense Contract Administration Services Management Area, Los Angeles; Deputy Division Engineer, U.S. Army Engineer Division, Europe, in charge of all military construction in the European Theatre (the largest Military Construction Program in the world); Director of Procurement and Production, U.S. Army Troop Support Command; and Staff Advisor, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, Installations and Housing, where he was responsible for the Secretary of Defense's Military Contingency Construction Fund and all construction in Southeast and Northeast Asia. As a staff officer at the US Army Strategy and Tactics Analysis Group he initiated and conducted cutting-edge analyses of the air war in Vietnam for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He served two tours in Europe and two tours in Vietnam, in 1962-63 as an Advisor and in 1968-69, when he commanded the 62nd Engineer Battalion (Construction) and was responsible for converting the battalion to the Army's only Land- Clearing Battalion, one whose members earned many decorations during its existence. He received numerous military decorations throughout his career, including multiple awards of the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, and many others. He was active in professional associations, serving as President, St. Louis Chapter of the National Contract Management Association and President, Frankfurt Chapter, Society of American Military Engineers. He maintained his connections with the military after retirement through membership in The Military Officer's Association, the Association of the U.S. Army, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. On his retirement from the Army, Val enjoyed a series of challenging assignments with TRW's Space and Defense Sector in Redondo Beach, Ca. At TRW, Val was the Program Business Manager for the Technical Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), a major NASA Program which placed five satellites in geo-synchronous orbit around the earth, including the replacement for the TDRSS satellite lost as the payload in the Challenger disaster. developing the necessary procedures and reconstructing detailed cost data permitting the negotiation of over $750 million in undefinitized change orders with NASA, Val was subsequently appointed as the TRW Sector Emergency Preparedness Program Manager, where he initiated a program which was recognized as the most outstanding corporate program throughout the profession of Emergency Management. The program received recognition by both NASA and the American Defense Preparedness Association. He also wrote articles on emergency preparedness for the Contingency Journal. Val retired from TRW in , 1991.On his retirement from TRW, Val accepted the position of Chief, Facilities Planning, Los Angeles Public Programs and Services (PHP&S) and served as the Project Manager for the PHP&S Facilities Implementation Program, where he had full responsibility for the construction program development for 5 Comprehensive s and 41 s. During that time, as a result of the Northridge Earthquake in 1994, Val developed damage assessment and earthquake recovery and mitigation procedures which were subsequently used by all Los Angeles agencies. He received a special Certificate of Gratitude from the Board of Supervisors, of Los Angeles, for these efforts. Val took a deferred retirement from L.A. in , 1998 when he and Karin moved to Fairfield Harbour. built a new home and moved to Lakemere in River Bend in , 2007. Val is survived by his wife, Karin L. Paar-Carrasco, and his two children, Catherine Anmarie Luna of Austin, Texas and Christopher Andrew Carrasco, of New Bern North Carolina.
