Obituary: Ollie Rita Carter Carmichael was born on 5, 1935 to the late Julius Carter and Ophelia Carter in New York. She was the third eldest of eight children born to these parents. Ollie, affectionately known as Retha, Aunt Retha, or Ms. Carmichael to most, attended New York City Schools and later embarked on a career in the nursing field. She served for many years at Creedmoor Hospital where her love for people nurtured her to become the loving and caring person she was. The apple certainly did not fall far from the tree, like her mother, she became the source of haven for so many relatives and friends. She could have properly been nicknamed the Mother Hale of New York and North Carolina because her arms and doors were always open to those who crossed her path, and who were in need. In addition to being a loving wife to the late Mike Carmichael, she was also the mother of four beautiful children, including a set of twin boys, Mitchell Emmanuel and Daniel Julius, another son, Gregory Marshall, (all preceding her in death), and one princess, Kim Denise Carmichael. Even though she had her own immediate family, this did not deter her from showing love and compassion to countless others. She also became a surrogate mother to two of her grandchildren, Monique and Deanne Fitzgerald-Carmichael as a result of the untimely death of their mother, Carol Fitzgerald. Retha never made a difference between her children, so Monique (Nikki) and Deanne joined the rank of those being spoiled rotten! Upon retiring from Creedmoor Hospital, Retha embraced her ewest chapter in her life, and began to enjoy life to the fullest. She enjoyed shopping till she dropped, dining and traveling. She was a very outgoing person who loved being around her family. Being from such a large family, she was blessed to have family around her most of her life. She loved gardening and tended some of the most beautiful flower gardens there was. Inside her home, one could lose a finger or two should they ever dared to touch her lovely plants that crowded her living room. She entertained most of the time in her kitchen because the living room was just for her plants; couches and loveseats were there just for polite decoration! In later years, Retha began having health issues, which only slowed her down, but never destroyed her spirit. She was the perfect patient at all of the health facilities she frequented. She had a winning smile that radiated from her soul, and it burst from inside of her warming the hearts of everyone she knew. enduring many years of declining health, Retha departed this life on 26, 2016 with a void immediately being felt by everyone, especially her long-standing granddaughter, Nikki. Her love, care, commitment and dedication to her grandmother was stellar; and will never be forgotten. Joining her in her eternal life are her parents, Julius C. Carter, Sr. and Ophelia Carter; husband, Mike Carmichael, two sisters, Clarice Oates and Patricia Milam; three brothers: Lee Kenny Carter, David T. Carter, Julius C. Carter, Jr., and her three sons, Mitchell, Daniel Danny, and Gregory Carmichael. She leaves to mourn her death, one daughter, Kim Denise Carmichael (N.C.), 8 grandchildren, Monique Nikki Fitzgerald (N.C.), Deanne Fitzgerald-Coleman (NY), Shannon, Danielle, Gabriel, Terrell Rasonne, Lavette; 4 great-grandchildren, Victoria Tori Galloway (NC) and Rudi Nikkia Rheems (NY/MD), Rayquan Ray-Ray Snowden, Jayceon; two sisters: Diane (Johnny) Price and Phyllis Coleman, both of NY. There are not enough pages, and not enough parlor rooms that will hold the countless number of people whose lives have been touched by Retha; as well as a large host of nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins, godchildren, adopted children and extended family and friends, respectively. We loved our Retha; our precious one who had the BIGGEST HEART ON THE PLANET; and the one who was the bridge that bonded and connected so many people together. We will surely grieve and miss her enormously, and solicit your continued prayers. |
