Obituary: Cecil L. Callender Jr., affectionately known as The Black Butterfly, was born in Atlantic City, NJ on 21, 1946 to Gladys E. Callender and Cecil L. Callender Sr. He was taken to his heavenly home in the early morning hours of 5, 2012, at Atlanti Medical , Mainland Division. Cecil was educated in the Atlantic City schools system attending the New Jersey Avenue School, Chelsea Junior High School, and graduating from the Atlantic City High School as a member of the class of 1964. While attending the New Jersey Avenue School, Cecil received the American Legion Award for Excellence in History. This was quite an honor to Cecil, especially since his received the same award in the sixth grade class at the New Jersey Avenue School, as well. Both of their names are etched opposite each other on a plaque that hung in the schools auditorium. This was a great source of pride for Cecil throughout his entire life. As a senior at Atlantic City High, Cecil was a recipient of several scholarships, Cecil went on to further his education by attending Howard University in Washington, DC. It is there that Cecil developed his love and passion for computer technology, thus encouraging Cecil to enroll at the Institute of Computer Management in Philadelphia, PA, where he earned certificates in computer management and programming. While at the Institute, Cecil joined the IRS where he began as a clerk and later advanced to tax examiner. Later he transferred first to the U.S. Treasury Department and then to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Pomona, NJ. Cecils career with the US Government Services spanned more than 40 years and included many positions. One of his most memorable occurred while working at the US Treasury Department. At this time Cecil was selected to work with the US Secret Service data processing unit in Washington DC and was assigned to the White House. At the Federal Aviation Administration, Cecil held many job position and duties including Computer Specialist, Lead Test Coordinator, Section Supervisor, Union Treasurer, Discrimination Complaint Investigator and Grievance examiner for all of the FAA facilities located in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. 40 years of government service, Cecil finally retired in May, 2010. With the birth of Atlantic Citys Casino Era and the opening of the citys first casino, in 1979, Cecil explored the world of entrepreneurship and opened a record store and boutique with the uncommon name The Black Butterfly. It was during this exciting time in Cecils life that He met Larry Hayes, who at the time was the general manager of Atlantic Citys radio station, WUSS. This personal introduction eventually led Cecil to join the WUSS team as a radio host and program producer. Cecil produced and hosted a Jazz Program on the weekends and a Rhythm and Blues program during the weekdays. While broadcasting live from Gardners Basin during a Jazz Festival, Cecil had the pleasure to interview Jazz Greats; Nancy Wilson, Grover Washington Jr. and, then new group; Pieces of a Dream. This opportunity sparked Cecils desire to pursue his musical ambitions. Cecil began to bring live music to Atlantic City beginning with Miss Dakota Staton at the Herhans African American Restaurant and continuing with shows at the Famous Wonder Garden Nightclub and Famous Club Harlem. He also managed the high fashion modeling group, Gerre Beamons Touch of Class, who raised money to support the local Police Athletic League. Cecil efforts to support his community and Atlantic Citys youth earned him the honor of receiving an Outstanding Young Black Professional award given by the Atlantic City Press for returning his roots and his efforts in the revitalization of Atlantic City. Cecil was the co-founder and president of the Black Butterfly Audio Video Club that was dedicated to preserving and documenting the Black experience through the preservation of audio and video recordings. Cecil also loved history and at times would read a book a day. Cecil will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Cecil was predeceased by: his father, Cecil L. Callender, Sr.; a son, Jason Troy Callender; and a sister Esther D. Callender. Left to cherish his memory are: his mother, Gladys E. Callender; daughter, Devon Brown; brother, Gary D. Callender, all of Atlantic City; sister, Ivy L. Daniels (Isaac) of Pleasantville; two nieces, Tajuana E. Callender of Mays Landing and Ghaleya S. Callender of Yonkers, New York; one nephew, Rhaquay D. Callender of Mays Landing; an uncle, Arthur Dorrington of Atlantic City; special friends, Debbie Gardner and Willie Gainer and a host of other family and friends. Lovingly Submitted, The Family |
