Obituary: Mamie Morris Cronin, 101, was born 14, 1912. Mamie passed away at home , 14, 2014, just three months shy of her 102nd birthday. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. , 20th at Lakewood on Clinton Boulevard in Jackson. services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on , 21st at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1301 Pinehaven Drive, Clinton. Mamie was born and raised in Purvis, Lamar , MS where her family owned and operated the town’s only Mercantile store up through the Great Depression. Mamie met and married Jessie Roscoe Cronin on 3, 1928. Mamie and Jessie moved to Lincoln where Jessie became a professional boxer. Mamie so enjoyed telling the tales of “Big Boy Cronin” and his boxing days. As their family grew, they moved to Copiah before making their way and settling to the Hinds area during World War II. Mamie was a devoted and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved the Gospel and she treasured the knowledge of eternal families above all else. She held numerous callings in the church over the years, including pianist and teaching the Primary children. Mamie cherished the poem, “One Hundred Years’ as she wanted to make a difference and “be important in the life of a child.” Mamie was known wherever she lived for her generosity, kindness and hospitality to many, especially to the “Mormon” missionaries who traveled the countryside. Her door was always open to those in need or to those who, simply, sought the pleasure of her company. In 1955, Mamie and Jessie headed west to Anaheim, CA where they lived “a stone’s throw” from Disneyland. Mamie loved for any of her “southern” family to come and visit as they could stand from the view of her home and watch the sites and hear the sounds of the excitement of the brand new theme park. Mamie enjoyed the beauty of the west coast, but longed to return to her home, Mississippi, which they did in the early 60’s settling permanently in Clinton. While Mamie “Granny Cronin” will always be remembered for her great legacy of love for family, the highlight of her life was serving with Jessie for 18 months as missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the New Zealand mission. Mamie, who never cared to venture far from home, found such joy and fulfillment in her life as she served the Maori people. She brought her great love for the Maori people home with her as a treasure of her heart. For as long as she was able she would share many stories of the spiritual experiences she had as a missionary in that beautiful country. Mamie wanted nothing more in life than to share her faith and her testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ. She bore that testimony to her children and grandchildren on every occasion they gathered as a family. No matter the time of day or night when Mamie opened her door and saw a member of her family you could see the twinkle in her eyes and she never failed to greet any one of them with open arms. Her legacy will forever be one of “love at home.” |

Obituary: STEVE CROFT, 92, of Longview, MS, passed away on 6, 2011. He proudly served in the 840th Engineering Unit in Europe during WWII. He lived most of his life in the Collierville/Barton area where he owned a Ford tractor dealership for many years, as well as being a dairy farmer, avid fisherman, and skilled wood craftsman. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry and Muggie Croft of Longview, MS; his daughter, Brenda Croft; and his brothers and sister, Joe Croft, JV Pete Croft, WW Red Croft, Fannie Sue Glenn, and Morris Croft. He leaves his loving wife of 68 years, Betty Ray Croft; two daughters, Cherri Croft Lightsey and her husband, Mike, and Amy Croft Loftin; three grandchildren, Rachel Loftin Burnett and her husband, Paul, Steven Loftin, and Caroline Loftin.
