Gautier, Mississippi

Robert A. (Bob) Carter, Sr passed away 8, 2012 to be with his wife of almost 60 years. He was born on 9, 1931 in Nashville, TN to parents William F. and Bessie Carter. He grew up in Nashville working in the grocery business with H.G. Hill before beginning a career with Colonial Bread . He married his life long girlfriend, Juanita Joyce Carter, 26, 1952 and they began an adventure that is an inspiration to family and friends. The love and happiness they shared was known by all that met them. Their’s was a true love story and they are together again. Their marriage produced two surviving sons, Robert A. (Rocky) Carter, Jr. and Ricky A. Carter (Judy) all of Gautier, MS.

He was affectionately known as "Papa Bob" to his 8 surviving grandchildren: Leah Michelle (John) Hussung, Elizabeth Shawn (John) Torbert, Christina Louise (Dustin) Stacy, Ricky A. (Olivia) Carter II, Amanda Joyce (Doug) Donaldson, Rebecca Ann (Keith) Durham, Georgianna Lee (Kyle) Stacy and Jada Breeann Carter; and 11 great grandchildren: Garrett and Gavin Torbert, John Mills and Marleigh Hussung, Abby, Bailey and Bryant Carter, Madeline Donaldson, and Cara, Tristan and Aidan Durham. Papa Bob was quick to share his lap for a hug and a smile!

Many pictures have been made at Christmas time with him wearing his special Santa suit passing out gifts and holiday cheer. He visited schools, nursing homes, hospitals sharing his smile, rosy cheeks and his special Ho-Ho-Ho.

He enjoyed many activities, Saints football, college football, NASCAR, gardening, going to the gym, cooking and especially his church, Gautier First United Methodist. He worked every day taking care of his landscaping at home and at his church, especially the memorial garden he created for his wife. He was well known at the local nurseries picking out new seasonal flowers for his gardens. He bought fresh pink roses every week for his wife and pink roses will proudly be displayed at his service.

He moved to the coast 7, 1969 after being named president of Colonial Bakery in Gulfport, MS. He stayed in that position until his retirement. He never slowed down after retirement, now taking on projects for fun and recreation. He was very active in promoting economic development in Gautier/ Jackson Mississippi, giving much of his time and talents to help his "home" town grow. He was a very proud member of Rotary Club and was a recipient of their highest award, Paul Harris Fellow. He was also very involved with Ocean Springs Elks Lodge, YMCA of Ocean Springs and proud University of Texas, Austin School of Business graduate. He was quick to share his personal views on politics, because he cared and was active in politics. He read every word in his daily papers and stayed current with any thing happening on his coast.

Papa loved entertaining in his home with Nana, his greatest pleasure came spending time with his family. He loved hosting his shrimp boils. He attended birthday parties, graduations, games, plays, anything that his grandchildren/great-grandchildren were involved with. He loved attending church and being with his church family. He joined Blakemore United Methodist Church as a youth member and worked with his wife leading Methodist Youth Fellowship. Dr. Matthew W. Charlton, Senior Pastor of Blakemore UMC will lead service in memory of Mr.Carter.
