Obituary: Robert Bob Cote, 95 Falmouth - Robert (Bob) Benjamin Cote, a longtime resident of Falmouth, died peacefully at the age of 95 ½, on 28, 2014, while surrounded by his children at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. Bob was born in Portland on 13, 1919 to Joseph Thomas Cote and Alice E. (Purington) Cote and grew up on Munjoy Hill with his brother, Lawrence Eustis, and sister, Gladys. Always proud of his Munjoy Hill roots, he was a lifelong Bulldog, attending Portland Public Schools and graduating from Portland High School in 1937. An incredibly hard worker and talented salesman, Bob served as an office boy at the National Cash Register during his high school years and took a job as a salesman for $12/week with Burbank and Douglass, a china and glass importer, in 1939. In 1945, Bob began his career with New England Telephone as an apprentice, quickly moving into the installation and repair division and becoming a service foreman. Soon after, he was selected to participate in their Management Identification Program and was later placed in charge of training, safety, drivers education, and CPR programs for all craftsmen, a position he held until his retirement in 1981. Never one to sit idle, Bob quickly put his salesmanship skills to work again, earning his broker license in real estate and joining his good friend, Jacob (Jake) Webb, at Greater Portland Realty. A persistent, convincing, and charismatic man, Bob was well known for selling the unsellable. Jakes death, Bob served as the broker on record so that Jakes daughter, Pamela, had time to earn her brokers license and continue her familys real estate legacy. Bob married Charlotte Maxine (Douglass) Cote on 17, 1942 in a military ceremony at Fort Williams Chapel in Cape Elizabeth. lived briefly in Yarmouth before Bob was deployed to the South Pacific in World War II as a signalman first class in the United States Navy, serving nearly four years on the U.S.S. Beryl, PY23. While in the Navy, Bob served as assistant navigator and was honorably discharged on 12, 1945 at the rank of Chief Quartermaster/Chief Flags. Following his safe return, he and Charlotte built a home overlooking Mussel Cove in Falmouth where they raised their children and lived together for 63 years. Bob continued to live independently in their home for several years after Charlottes death, surrounded and cared for by his children, daughter-in law, and granddaughters. Bob and Charlottes picturesque home has been at the heart of the familys life together, both literally and figuratively. His children have made their homes on adjoining properties, often referred to as the Cote Compound, and his grandchildren spent as much time at his home as they did at their own. In fact, to continue the Cote legacy, at his request, his eldest granddaughter and her family have recently made their home in his former residence. Numerous family celebrations have been held at their seaside property, from their daughters wedding to their granddaughters bridal showers to their 50th wedding anniversary and Bobs 95th birthday party this past . A father to all, Bob served as Falmouths President of the American Field Service Club in the 1960s and opened his home and heart to many children over the years, including ones from New Zealand (Aaron Bell), Denmark (Knud Reckweg and his son, Adam Cordes), California (Mike Smith), and Alaska (Ed Gertler). He and Charlotte devoted their retirements to their granddaughters care, spending countless hours attending every event in which his granddaughters participated; he could often be seen in the stands at soccer games, running through fields at cross-country meets, beaming in the stands at concerts and graduations, and digging through the trash at the elementary school to find his eldest granddaughters retainer (several times!). In lieu of his own pursuit of higher education due to serving his country, he was a staunch champion of his childrens, grandchildrens, and even great-grandchildrens education, setting aside money so financial challenges would never be a barrier to their dreams. Always up for an adventure, Bob traveled the world with his family, both across the United States and abroad, making many friends along the way. Known for his fierce determination and incredible will, he climbed Machu Piccchu in Peru at 85, traveled to New Zealand at 87, and celebrated his 92nd birthday in Alaska with his son. Bob has always prided himself on living his life according to the tenets of the Boy Scouts of Americas Oath and Law, having joined Troup 12 at the St. Lawrence Congregational Church on Munjoy Hill in the 1920s, and earning his Eagle Scout badge in 1933. He also served as Scoutmaster to Troup 34 in Falmouth for several years, and was a mentor to Eagle Scout candidates. Upon his death, he was the oldest living Eagle Scout in Falmouth, and one of the oldest in the entire state. Bob was a 33rd Degree Master Mason in the Triangle Lodge #1 in Portland Maine, a member of the Scottish Rite, and also a member of the Kora Shriners of Maine and Marco Island, FL. He was a longtime member of Emmaus Lutheran Church. A proud World War II veteran and patriot, Bob was known and loved by a wide variety of community members, both old and young - from the dry cleaners to the cardiac rehab and gym trainers, from his ank ladies and the jewelers to all the bakery employees in the Greater Portland area! He is survived by his son, Ronald Cote and wife Linda of Falmouth, and his daughter, Pamela Potter and husband David of Falmouth. He also leaves his two granddaughters, Cassandra Cote Grantham and husband Andrew of Falmouth, Chelsea Ginn and husband Matthew of Portland, and two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Cote Grantham and Michael Grantham. There will be a Masonic Service with military honors held on , 2 at 3:30 continued... |

Obituary: OLD TOWN - Richard R. Cote, 73, died , Feb. 12, 2010, in Auburn, after a valiant, seven-year battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 13, 1937, at Ma Beans Boarding House and Midwifery, to Elda (Pineau) Cote and Joseph Roland Cote of Livermore Falls. He contracted polio as an infant. He was the eldest of 9 children, and attended Livermore Falls schools. In 1950 and 1951 he attended and was junior counselor at Pine Tree Camp, North Pond, Rome, which nurtured his lifelong love of the outdoors. His time at Pine Tree Camp left a lasting impact, as he enjoyed fishing, canoeing, swimming and exploring the natural beauty of Maine for the rest of his life. He graduated from Livermore Falls High School in 1955 as president of his graduating class. He went on to attend the University of Maine at Farmington, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1959. While at UMF he was a member of the Kappa Delta Phi fraternity. On 27, 1959, he married Lila (Fournier) Cote, formerly of Jay, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Jay. The couple divorced in 1998. Early in his career he taught elementary school in North Jay and served as teacher and vice principal at Myrtle Street Grammar School, Waterville. Inspired by the Johnson Administrations "Great Society" reform program, he returned to school in the mid-1960s to earn a masters degree in social work from Boston in 1966. While in graduate school his family grew to include four children. While pursuing his masters degree in social work, the family lived in Bostons largely minority Roxbury neighborhood during the early days of school bussing unrest. graduation in 1966, the family moved to Owls Head, and later to Rockland. He took a position as social worker with Knox , where he worked from 1966 to 1970. In 1970 the family moved to Waterville, where they settled for more than 30 years. He was a social worker with Maine Childrens for Little Wanderers adoption agency from 1970 to 1973 before taking a position as a licensed clinical social worker with Kennebec Valley Mental , where he was director of consultation and education. He provided clinical mental health counseling to families and individuals from the Waterville/Central Maine area until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of Maine Elks Association, Lodge No. 905 for 20 years. In addition to being an avid fisherman, which took him to remote water bodies throughout the state, he loved to explore Maine, from the wilderness of Baxter State Park to the rocky coastline from Eastport to Reid State Park. Despite his disability, he climbed Mount Katahdin and many other mountains in Baxter State Park and western Maine, canoed the Allagash, whitewater rafted and explored Acadia National Park. He was active in cycling and swimming until his illness. For many years he made an annual pilgrimage to Kidney Pond in Baxter State Park, where he would camp at Lone Pine No. 1 with a view of "The Greatest Mountain" from the front porch. He revered nature and the natural beauty of Maine. He delighted striking off to places unknown, his Maine Atlas at hand, and in introducing friends, children and grandchildren to out-of-the-way gems. He was an engaging conversationalist who charmed friends and strangers alike with stories, advice on physical, cultural and historical splendors of Maine, books and more - all with a wry smile and a sparkle in his eye. retirement he reconnected with his teenage sweetheart from Pine Tree Camp, Janice Fournier and moved to Old Town in 2002. While in Old Town he formed many new friendships, and enjoyed touring, exploring and introducing Janice to his favorite places in Maine. He had a great interest in the history of Maine and eastern Canada: the Native American culture, French-Canadian culture and heritage, and the Acadian history. He was an avid reader of these and other subjects. He was an avid - and cut-throat - cribbage player. He is survived by his partner of eight years, Janice Fournier of Old Town; six children, Laura Watson of Lewiston, Rick and Kate Cote of Portland, Ore., Lynne and Jeffrey Bragg of Mount Vernon, Lisa Cote of North Berwick, Robert and Bethany Cote of China and Brooke "Leslie" and John Kehoe of Rockport. He leaves 10 grandchildren, Emily Quandt of Winslow, Annie Quandt of Lewiston, Ryan, Owen and Camille Cote of Portland, Ore., Elise and Lily Bragg of Mount Vernon, Samantha and Emma Cote of China and Aedan Kehoe of Rockport. He is also survived by seven siblings, Patty Punch of Livermore Falls, Sandra and Brian Doughty of Greenville, Carol and Maurice Perreault of Jay, Suzanne Bowen of South Paris, Thomas and Mary Cote of Livermore Falls, Victoria and Paul Cyr of Lexington, S.C., and Geoffrey and Bernice Cote of Wilton; and scores of nieces, nephews and cousins and their children. He leaves behind many dear and lifelong friends. A Mass will be held 11 a.m. , Feb. 20, at St. Anns Catholic Church, Indian Island, Old Town. A luncheon reception will be held after the Mass in the parish hall at Holy Family Church, Old Town. Interment at Mount Hope , Bangor, will be at a later date.
