Obituary: The angels from heaven came for Edna and escorted her into the safe and loving arms of our Lord, Jesus Christ on 18, 2016 where she will be reunited with those who have gone before her in peaceful eternal rest, especially the love of her life, Milton Eugene Cotaya, Jr.; her parents Frank Joseph Bender and Edna Mercante Bender; her in-laws Milton Eugene Cotaya, Sr. and Gertrude Doucet Cotaya; her grandson Terrence “Bubba” Cotaya, her granddaughter Ashley Blackwood and her dearest friends Frank Logue, Sr. and Betty Perez Logue. Following a brief but constant vigil by her son Terry, her great-grandchildren Terrence, III and Alexis Blackwood, and her daughters Vicki and Trudi, she passed away peacefully at home in Slidell, hand in hand with her daughter Vicki, who was at her side. Edna is the daughter of the late Frank Joseph Bender and Edna Mercante Bender. She is the mother of Milton “Skip” Cotaya, III (Lynn), Cathy Cotaya Huber Read, Terrence Cotaya, Lee Cotaya (Jan), Vicki Cotaya Tosh (Joe), and Trudi Cotaya Blackwood (Terry). Grandmother of Melissa Cotaya in, the late Terrence “Bubba” Cotaya, Jr., Timothy Cotaya, Thomas Huber, II, William “Terry” Blackwood, III, Kristen Cotaya, Paul Cotaya, Jessica Cotaya, Laura Cotaya Carroll, the late Ashley Blackwood, Matthew Cotaya and Beaux Blackwood. Great-grandmother of Brianna Cotaya, Terrence Cotaya, III, Savannah in, Alyssa Danove, Alexis Blackwood, Brooklyn Cotaya, Addison Blackwood, Taylor Cotaya, Sarah in, Annelise Cotaya, Emmeline Cotaya, Quinn Carroll, Lola Cotaya and John Atlas Cotaya. She is also the sister of Charmaine Ansardi and sister-in-law of Wilfred Cotaya. Edna was born and raised in New Orleans, moving to Metairie just after starting her family, then on to Kenner and Harahan before settling in Slidell to be in the constant and loving care of her daughter Vicki and her husband Joe. Edna was a founding member of Our Lady of Divine Providence Church in Metairie and taught high school religion in her home for many years. Edna's love for sports began as a little girl attending Tulane football games with her father. Along with Milton, she became a big time LSU fan, traveling with the football team where ever they played; the baseball team all the way to Omaha; but her favorite was cheering them on in basketball. She loved, loved, loved her Tigers. She was also a big Saints fan from their first game at Tulane stadium. Her enthusiastic "cheering" for the Saints always seemed to end with the phrase "pardon my French". She and Milton were also season ticket holders and fans of the Jazz. Edna was always very talented in sewing and needlework but she really began expressing her unbelievable artistic talent when she joined a ceramic class at Delta Playground that eventually upgraded to porcelain classes. She was very talented winning several awards for her works of art. When that class was coming to a close, Milton surprised her with her very own kiln in their garage so she and a few of her closest friends from the class could meet weekly and pursue their talents. Milton always teased, she was "playing porcelain with the girls”. Her many beautiful pieces are treasured by her family more than gold. While enrolled in a simple water aerobics class at Elmwood, her instructor suddenly decided to convert the class to swim lessons. The reason this is so ironic is that prior to that day Edna was never one that liked water in her face but her instructor insisted and there began a new chapter in Edna’s life. So at the age of 66 she not only learned to swim but went on to swim in the Senior Olympics receiving numerous metals and trophies for her statewide competitions. Edna traveled the world with her beloved Milton. Her bags seemed to always be packed for adventure. She once convinced Milton and several other couples to go to Hawaii “on their way back from a convention in San Francisco”. Now we all know Hawaii is clearly in the other direction but as she said “it was only an inch on the map”. When her grand-children came along, she included them in that passion for travel and adventure. Her and Vicki would often pack up six or eight of them at a time for day trips in the city ranging from their frequent trips to the zoo and aquarium with picnics in city park to rides on the street cars, swamp tours and even to Baton Rouge for tours of our state capital and our magnificent “Mike the Tiger” on LSU campus. When she really got brave she would take as many as six at a time to travel the states for week-long vacations. She truly loved seeing the joy and excitement on their young faces as they joined in on her constant quest for adventure. When the grand-children had grown she reunited with a group of old friends that shared her same quest for fun and adventure and formed their own “Red-Hatter” group calling themselves the “Sew and Sews”. When their group of a dozen or so would walk into a venue such as a restaurant, museum or otherwise, all wearing their bright purple outfits and sometimes outlandish red hats, purses and shoes, it was certainly a sight to see. Edna was a wonderful and dedicated wife. Milton always said she was the best two bucks he ever spent, since that was the cost of their marriage license. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and true friend. Although she will be missed terribly, more than word can express, we are so very thankful that she and Milton are once again reunited just in time, because you see, Edna has a date with Milton on the 24th to celebrate their 67th wedding anniversary. She has disembarked on her final adventure … No bags are needed this time as her destination is Heaven. So St. Peter, when you see Edna running toward the Pearly Gates with her beautiful pink flowing gown, please don’t make continued... |
