Obituary: Elsie M. Carper, the daughter of Harriett (Hughes) and William Neill, was born 30, 1919 at Alberavon, Port Albert, Wales. She departed this life on , 23, 2014 at Salina, Kansas at the age of 95 years, 1 month and 23 days. Elsie was raised in Falmouth, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. She was the first in her family to graduate from high school in 1938. Following her graduation she worked for several doctors and their wives, living in their homes cooking and caring for small children. In 1942, she began working on the Army base at Camp Edwards, and at one of the USO dances on the base she met a young many from Lebanon, Kansas. World War II ended Elsie was united in marriage with Gerald Paul Carper on 27, 1945 at Falmouth. moved to Kansas shortly after that and this union was blessed with the adoption of two daughters, Wanda Lou Carper Frasier in 1953, and Cheryl Ann Carper Hubbard in 1957. Elsie would always tell the girls they were the light of her life and that God had blessed her so much with them. The girls felt the same. Over the course of almost 25 years of marriage, Elsie was by Geralds side. In the early years they farmed several rental properties and leased a grocery business in Lebanon. In 1969, when Geralds health was failing, the family moved into Lebanon and purchased another grocery store. Geralds death in of 1970, Elsie sold the stores and took early retirement to finish raising the girls. Elsie accepted Christ and was baptized in the early 1950s at the Oak Creek Christian Church. moving their membership to the Lebanon Christian Church in the late 1950s, Elsie and Gerald raised their girls in a loving Christian home and all were active in the church at Lebanon. She was a former member of CWF. Over the years Elsie enjoyed her monthly Jenny Lind Card Club. She also served on several election boards, volunteered at Red Cross Blood Drives and active on a bowling team in Smith . She was lovingly known in the family circle as the Queen of Canasta! She loved the card game and taught her daughters and all of her grandchildren. She was never let any of the grandkids win. If they won, they had won on their own. The entire family will always remember Elsie for letting you know to close your canasta by saying IP IT UP! She also loved to beat you in a good game of Aggravation. Elsie will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and a loved and respected citizen of Lebanon. As a recent resident of Kenwood View in Salina the staff all said She had the sweetest smile. Preceding her in death were her husband, Gerald; a brother Bill Neill and sisters, Barbara Neill and Anne Schoonmaker. Also preceding her in death were brothers- and sisters-in-law, Don Carper, Edna Carper Kattenberg, Ernie Kattenberg, Mary Carper Keifer, Wayne Keifer, Lois Carper and Jim Franklin, and in-laws Paul and Esther Carper, as well as a favorite in-law aunt, Ruth Brown and husband Frank. Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Wanda Carper Frasier and husband Doug of Burr Oak, Kansas, and Cheryl Carper Hubbard and friend Marty Walker of Salina, Kansas; a granddaughter, Michelle Hubbard Davidson and husband Marc of Wichita; six grandsons, Shaun Hubbard of Ruidoso, New Mexico; Jason Frasier of Topeka; Skylar Frasier of Springfield, Oregon; Josh Frasier and wife Amanda of Hastings, Nebraska; and Caleb Frasier and wife Lauren of Wichita, Kansas; seven great grandchildren, Cale, Hayley, Logan and Carly Davidson of Wichita; Luke Frasier of Hastings, Nebraska; and Jayden and Jaxson Frasier of Wichita. Also surviving is her dear friend and card playing buddy, Hazel Koch of Lebanon, and a host of relatives and friends. Graveside services and interment were held , 10:00 a.m., 28, 2014 at the Mt. Hope in Smith , Kansas with the Rev. Lance McDowell officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Lebanon Christian Church.
