Obituary: Charles H. (Charlie) Cox, first SIUE campus photographer, died at 7:30 pm on 11, at Anderson Hospital. He was 90 years of age. Charlie was born Sept. 15, 1924, in New Orleans, LA, the son of Charles Cooley Cox and Zenobia Waters Cox. Both preceded him in death. He married Jennie Lou Goldsmith on 29, 1947, in Olney, IL. She survives. Surviving are two sons, Greg Cox and wife, Joan, of Covington, LA, and Doug Cox of Burbank, CA.; grandchildren Charles S. Cox and Sally Cox, both of Covington, LA; several nieces and nephews, two sisters-in-law, Naomi Welsh of Belleville, and Leagh Goldsmith of Olney, IL, a cousin, Kenneth Cox of Nashville, TN, plus extended family members and friends. Charlie grew up in Louisville, IL. At the age of 13 he started cornet lessons and bought his first camera for 50 cents. Since there was no money for film, he learned to take pictures in his mind, a practice he applied throughout his career as a photographer. He was his towns first Eagle Scout. He spent many summers as bugler in Boy Scout camps. He was first chair cornet in his high school band. Enrolled at the University of Illinois in 1942, Charlie was a member of the ing Illini football band. He left the University in the spring of 1943 to enter the army. A veteran of World War Two, serving in Europe, he returned to the U of I in 1946, earning a degree in journalism in 1949. It was on that campus that he and his wife met. were married in Olney, IL, on 29, 1947. graduation, Charlie became a reporter and photographer on the Newton, IL, Press. He also was a news reporter on the Olney, IL radio station, WVLN. In 1951 he and his wife bought the Altamont News, a weekly newspaper in Altamont, IL. published that paper for seven and a half years. Under their ownership the paper won several state and national weekly newspaper awards in news writing and photography. When the Coxes sold the newspaper in 1958, Charlie was named director of public relations for McKendree (now McKendree University) in Lebanon, IL. In , 1961, he became the first campus photographer for the new Southern Illinois University campus at Edwardsville. He retired in 1986. Charlie, who was living in Lebanon when he was hired at SIUE, recalled that on the night before his first day of work at SIUE an 8-inch snow fell. His car got stuck on the primitive campus trails and he wondered if he had made the right decision to take the SIUE job. He was the campus photographer for 25½ years. retiring, Charlie assisted his wife in quilt making. For many years they attended the American Quilting Society annual shows in Paducah, KY. Their favorite quilt fabric store was Hancocks in Paducah. often joked that they had bought enough quilt fabric there to start their own store. Charlie enjoyed reading and listening to big band, blue grass and classical music. He was a fan of the baseball Cardinals. He was a member of ESIC Baptist Church in Edwardsville. Charlie was a past president of the Southern Illinois Editorial Association and a charter member of the Southern Illinois professional chapter of Sigma Delta Chi journalism society. Cremation rites were accorded at the wishes of the family. Committal services will be private. In celebration of his life, a visitation gathering will be held , 15, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM with a memorial service to follow at ESIC Baptist Church, 1000 University Drive in Edwardsville, IL. Obituary: PEORIA- Charles Warren Cox, 89 of Peoria passed away , 17, 2010 at Hawthorne Manor Court in Peoria. He was born 9, 1921 to Joseph Pearl and Mollie Monson Cox in Eliza Township, Mercer , IL. He married Mary Anna Ann Hays on 28, 1946 in Aledo, IL at the Methodist Church. She survives. celebrated 64 years of marriage this year. There were two children born to this union, Ann L. (Chuck) Oliver of Pekin, and Joseph R. (Cyndi) Cox of Ballwin, MO; grandchildren, Cassandra Oliver, Lyndsey (Cory) Critchell, Ansley Cox, Jason Cox all of the St. Louis, MO area; one sister, Doris Kennedy of Milan, IL; numerous nephews and nieces, great nieces and nephews, and several great-great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by one granddaughter, Brittany Jo, his parents, an infant sister, sisters, Helen Cox, Gladys Sohn, and Vera Powell, and two brothers, Ralph and Fred Cox. He attended rural grade school and graduated from Muscatine High School (IA) in 1939. a brief stint farming with his father, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served three years. He spent most of the time as a Flight Engineer on B-24 heavy bombers. His squadrons flew in the European Theater and were cited may times for accuracy on bombing runs, and their crew was the lead plane on many flights. He attended Western Illinois University. He graduated with high honors from the University of Illinois with a degree in Agriculture Education. The couple moved to Brimfield in 1949 where he taught Agriculture Class for 6 1/2 years. He was then employed by CILCO until his retirement after 31 years as Senior Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors for CILCO. Upon leaving his teaching position in Brimfield, he was elected to the School Board of Dist. 309. He was elected an Honorary State FFA farmer. He was a 24 year member of the Heart of Illinois Fair Board of Directors, serving two years as President. He was a lifetime member (57 years) of the Elmwood Blue Lodge, the Peoria Consistory, the Peoria Mohammed Shrine; a former member of the Elks Club in Creve Coeur, Arrowhead Country Club, the Board of Directors for the Boys Club in Peoria, the ICC Foundation Board, the Union Church in Brimfield where he was a member on the Board and Chairman of the Building Commission for the new Fellowship Hall. He was a longtime member of the First Federated Church in Peoria where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. , 20, 2010. Pastor Forrest Krummel will officiate.
