Obituary: Leroy “Roy” Copeland, 34, of Springfield, quite suddenly passed away at 7:57a.m. on , 6, 2010 at St. John’s Hospital. Leroy was born 15, 1975 in Chicago, the son of Leroy and Sharon (Wolfe) Copeland. Leroy was formerly of Chicago and had been a member of the Springfield community for 26 years. He spent a large portion of his life doing maintenance work in profession. Quoting from his mother and grandmother, “Leroy taught himself to read by watching PBS programs”. This affinity for reading continued forward in life and he became an avid reader of a variety topics. Selectively well spoken and opinionated at times, Leroy enjoyed great debates and great friends. Other passionate notables include: countless humorous conversations, being well versed in science fiction vernacular and topic, and a true appreciation of online gaming. On a more personal level, Leroy was a very caring individual. With the bone structure of a pro-football player, Leroy’s 6’6” frame earned him the nickname of the “Gentle Giant” in this regard. Leroy’s outward appearance was a stark contrast of who he really was on the inside, it really holds true that you can never judge a book by its cover. Simply put, Leroy cared greatly for the people closest to him. In addition, he did what he could to show his admiration, care, and respect in subtle ways. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mattie Copeland of Chicago; grandfather, Mervin Wolfe of Kincaid; survived by his mother, Sharon McKinney, and stepfather, Eugene McKinney both of Springfield; a brother, Rodney (wife, Jennifer) Copeland of O’Fallon, MO; two nephews, Isaiah and Taigen Copeland; a grandmother, Shirley Carstens of Pontiac; and very large number of aunts, uncles and cousins. Leroy will always be loved very much and be truly missed by many. In accordance with Leroy’s final wishes cremation was accorded by Lincoln Land Cremation Society. A private friends and family memorial gathering will be held at 700 Washington Street, Riverton IL on 10th, 12-5pm. People are welcome to arrive at any point during this time-frame to celebrate the life of Leroy Copeland. |
