Obituary: Mrs. Frances Luise Makurath Charles, age 98, of Honolulu, Hawaii and formerly of Athens, Georgia, passed from this life into the next after a brief illness on , 14, 2016. She is now reunited with her husband, Dr. A. Aldo Charles in the glory of Gods eternal companionship. She was and is dearly loved by her surviving children: A. Aldo Charles, Jr. and wife Margaret of Columbia, South Carolina, Lydia C. Desmond and Roger H. Charles and wife Martha of Wilmington, North Carolina. She is also survived by multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren. Some people spend their lives dutifully, honorably, and faithfully in the quiet background of society, never coming into public view, never receiving accolades or trophies or recognition of any kind. And yet these individuals are the bedrock, the foundation of society, without which all others would never gain their footing. These people are often our mothers and those worthy of our greatest and truest admiration. Frances was just such a person, serving God, her family, her community and country with the utmost grace and integrity. She was born as a first generation American to immigrant parents on May 21, 1917 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania--just as the country was entering into the first World War. She studied hard in school only to graduate into the depths of the Great Depression. Through perseverance however, she gained employment with the then young IBM Corporation and the Pennsylvania Railroad until her marriage in 1939. By then, the clouds of war were forming again, and in just two short years, both she and her husband found themselves enmeshed in the war effort with the management of a munitions factory in Philadelphia. During this time, she became a mother and a supporter of her husbands continuing educational achievements. the war, they were finally able to settle into a stable life in Athens, Georgia, where she fully engaged as a housewife, mother and partner to her husband. This included the opportunity to design the house that they were to live in on Springdale St. Unfortunately, this phase of her life came to a premature end with the untimely passing of her husband in 1964. She then returned to outside work at the University of Georgia in Athens, just as the computer revolution was beginning. She was instrumental in the University transitioning to digital accounting, and remained in that position until her retirement in 1977. Her pleasurable pastime during this period was world travel, and she visited many countries around the globe, often with one of her children Rather than remain in Athens after retirement--a town with few amenities and resources for the elderly--she chose a full-featured retirement community in Honolulu, Hawaii, the Arcadia Retirement Residence. (She had discovered that there was a reciprocal relationship between the State of Georgias retirement system and Hawaiis.) She remained there until the end, forming many personal relationships and always greeting fellow retirees and staff with encouraging words, a bright smile and sparkling eyes. In lieu of a traditional funeral, a memorial service will be held at a later date in Wilmington, North Carolina. A private graveside service will be held at Oconee Hill in Athens, Georgia where her ashes will be interred in a plot next to her husbands. In closing, we know that Frances lived a complete life, full of all the joys, sorrows, satisfying experiences and disappointments that come with the journey. We pray that she now rests in the eternal comfort and everlasting peace of our Father in Heaven. And so we give thanks to the Lord for the life giving and life affirming blessing of Francess beautiful spirit, both in us and among us. She made our lives possible and inspires us ever to a more faithful and moral existence. |
