Born In Carmi, Illinois, On Oct. 4, 1949, He Was The Son Of George And The Late Juanita Wilson Churchwell. The Oldest Of Five Children, He Converted To Catholicism At The Age Of 17, Entering The Seminary Right Out Of High School. In A 2001 Interview With The Georgia Bulletin, He Admitted That His Parents Were Less Than Thrilled At First. He Said, “i Think They Thought That This Would Pass And They Would Come And Get Me When I Wanted To Leave,†Adding, “but Of Course, I Kept Them Waiting.†He Attended Saint Meinrad College In Indiana From 1967-71, Earning A Degree In Liberal Arts, Followed By A Postgraduate Degree In Theology In 1976. He Was Ordained To The Priesthood By Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan At The Cathedral Of Christ The King, Atlanta, On May 1, 1976. His First Assignments Were As A Parochial Vicar At Sts. Peter And Paul Church, Decatur, And Sacred Heart Church, Atlanta. He Served As Parochial Vicar At St. Anthony Of Padua Church, Atlanta, For One Year Before Beginning Graduate Studies In Canon Law From 1979-82 At The Catholic University In Washington, D.c. In December 2000, He Was Appointed A Judge In The Provincial Court Of Appeals. “i’ve Always Had A Need For An Intellectual Outlet And ( Canon Law ) Is One Way To Find That And To Also Be Doing Something Helpful For People,†He Told The Georgia Bulletin. As Pastor Of Historic Sacred Heart, He Welcomed Mother Teresa ( Now St. Teresa Of Kolkata ) For Her 1995 Visit To Atlanta. Given Six Days’ Notice, He Celebrated Mass For Some 1,300 In Honor Of The Foundress Of The Missionaries Of Charity On June 1, 1995. He Was Also Pastor Of The Downtown Parish For The 1996 Olympic Games, Which He Said “literally Happened At Our Door.†He Said, “it Was Definitely Something To Remember.†In The 2001 Interview, Msgr. Churchwell Said That He Appreciated The Uniqueness Of The Over 100-year-old Sacred Heart, Which “existed Not Only When It Was Easy To Be A Catholic, But When It Was Hard To Be A Catholic.†He Added, “one Needs To Respect The Tradition That Goes With That.†He Celebrated His Silver Jubilee In May 2001, And Later That Month He Was Invested As Monsignor By Archbishop John F. Donoghue, With The Rank Of Prelate Of Honor. He Was A Founding Member Of The Catholic Credit Union Board Of Directors Until Their Merger With The Georgia United Credit Union In 2005. He Remained On The Board Of Directors Until His Death. He Was Also A Trustee For The Catholic Foundation Of North Georgia. He Served As Manager Of The Priest’s Assistance Fund For Some 20 Years, As Well As The Priests’ Retirement Committee. Msgr. Obituary: Mr. Randolph Randy Charles Churchill, age 70, of Acworth, passed away, , 6, 2015. Mr. Churchill was born in Texas and later moved to Georgia where he worked for Lockheed Martin as a Systems Analyst. Mr. Churchill attended Tabernacle Baptist Church in Cartersville; he was a very loving father, and enjoyed watching movies, building, woodworking, and remodeling. Mr. Churchill was an avid fan of the Nebraska Corn Huskers. Mr. Churchill is survived by his mother, Doraline Churchill of Nebraska; son, David Churchill of Tampa, FL; three sisters, Deb Eitzman, Janice Mitchell, and Val Keuhn, all of Nebraska. Services will be held , 12, 2015 at 11:00am in the chapel of Winkenhofer Pine Ridge ; the family will receive friends from 10:00am until service time. Obituary: Jolita Violet Churchill went to be with the Lord on 10,2017. She was married to Dale William Churchill for 41 years before his death in 1999. Born 9,1939 in Washburn, Maine to Fred and Bertha Humphrey. Jolita was proceeded in death by her parents Fred and Bertha Humphrey, brothers Keith Humphrey , Timothy Humphrey, her sons, Max John Churchill and Matthew James Churchill. She is survived by her sister Nanilee Humphrey Buckingham and two sons, Mark Jay Churchill, and Mitchael Jerome Churchill (wife Glenda) grandchildren , Tony Churchill, Elizabeth Churchill Baird, Zachary Churchill, Travis Churchill, and Joseph Driggers, and countless others who called her "Grandma". She had 9 great grandchildren, Ashland, Ricki, Abigail, Laila, Harrisyn, Jayke, Charlee, Wyatt, and Kennedy. Jolita resided in Barrow , Georgia for the past 37 years and worked at Walmart in Winder for the last 33. Her joys in life other than her family were to travel and be adventurous as part of the" Golden Girls of Wal Mart," enjoying sights and adventures from Florida to Savannah to Maine; she loved attending hockey games for the local team; as well as shopping for all sorts of knick knacks and collecting stuffed raccoons. Jolita also greatly enjoyed being active in a wide range of community projects. She served on the Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors for several years, and was passionate in working with the Winder Peace Place, Inc., an organization that provided shelter and assistance to victims of domestic violence. Other volunteer projects she participated in were the Auburn Library, fundraisers held by her employer, and almost any other need or project that came her way from mentoring young girls to providing transportation and errand assistance to the elderly. She also held a deep commitment to both the Barrow Schools mentoring and business partner program - a relationship that took place for more than 20 years - and providing assistance to the school system for needs such as pencils, crayons and more through Walmart, much in part to her influence. Many words can be used to describe Jolita and her life, with the most prevalent words being passionate, positive, encouraging, friendly, generous, dedicated and loyal. Her joy in helping others will remain well-known through her family and friends. The family ask that in lieu of flowers donations made in her honor to The Boys and Girls Club in Winder or Peace Place in Winder. Smith of Winder, Georgia is in charge of handling the funeral arrangements. Visitation will be evening from 5pm-8pm. The funeral service will be the 14th at 4pm officiated by Rev. Spencer Breedlove. |
