Obituary: Devoted, loving wife and mother, lover of all creatures great and small, friend to almost all she met, historic preservation activist and exceptional cook, Emily Elizabeth Feaster Champion (89), better known as Mim to her family, died at home surrounded by family and friends on 17, 2015 after a valiant battle with muscle disease. She is survived by her two children, Rebecca Allison (Becky) Champion (Pine Mountain and Cartersville) and Lila Jane Champion and her special friend, David Soulis (Cartersville, GA); Nancy Martin (Pine Mountain, GA); and her beloved pups, Harley and Mike (Cartersville, GA). Emily was born on 26, 1925 - a bitterly cold winter day - on the family farm near Brevard, NC. During the difficult birth, the family believed that Emily was still born so they placed her in a wooden box near the stove. the doctor stabilized her mother, he diverted his attention to the small bundle in the box where he discovered a feisty baby girl with lungs indicative of her future spirit. She loved animals of all shapes and sizes. She never passed a turtle on the road and rescued many hundreds each spring and summer when the wetland out near the Etowah River on Old Tennessee Street was overflowing with turtles crossing the road. One Easter she rescued a baby blue jay that had fallen out of the nest, but had not yet escaped from its egg. Emily coaxed it from the egg and nursed it in a double boiler on the stove. The fact that it was Easter and the Resurrection was on young neighborhood minds, this irth took on great importance for many of the local children. Emily graduated from Brevard High School and attended Brevard , but transferred to Furman University in Greenville where she graduated with a degree in English. It was here that she met Thomas Champion on a date that almost did not happen. Emily and Champ had a blind date that was arranged by Thomas good friend, John Conyers. The two young men were fresh from their WWII service. Having contracted malaria in the Philippines, Champ was jaundiced and had lost an inordinate amount of weight. Being over six feet tall, he resembled a tall yellow lollipop. To impress their dates the boys had purchased the latest fashion craze for the occasion, new Dacron shirts. To their shock and surprise, the shirts released a foul odor when they were unwrapped so the boys washed them in the sink at the hotel. Of course this was before every hotel room had hair dryers so the shirts took hours to dry! Being a proper young lady and the boys being several hours late, Emily refused to go out until she finally succumbed to the Champion charm. marrying Thomas and moving to Cartersville, she taught English at Cassville High School; the boys in her class towered over her and delighted in playing pranks. One morning she opened her desk drawer and out jumped a frog. What the boys did not know was that Emily was raised by parents who loved and respected nature. That was the first time they studied biology in an English class. In addition to teaching, Emilys professional career included being the first director of the Bartow Training for mentally challenged individuals ages 0-18 and many years working side-by-side with her husband at Champion Drugs. Emily was very active in civic causes. She was a member of the Cartersville Service League, a leader in the Methodist Womens Circle, a member of the Etowah Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a founder of the Interagency Council, a Red Cross volunteer, a Girl Scout volunteer and leader, and a member of the Cartersville Business and Professional Womens Club. But her first love was historic preservation which was nurtured from her first trip to the Etowah Indian Mounds and her wonder and admiration of the historic homes in the area. She was a founding member of the Etowah Valley Historic Society, a member from 1970-present and served as its vice president for many years. Emily and Dianne Tate were partners in crime in the first tour of homes (1994) which has grown into one of the most successful fundraisers for the group. EVHS presented her with their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006, an award presented to individuals that have at least 20 years of service promoting and preserving the countys heritage. She was appointed to the first Cartersville Historic Preservation Commission which awarded her their Distinguished Service Award (2001-2008). Her work with the Commission found her working with long time Bartow Commissioner Clarence Brown and many City and community leaders. This work helped engage the county and city leadership to support restoration and protection of many historic prizes including the Gold-Dome Courthouse, Roselawn, and the Cherokee Street School. She lead the charge for the designation of local historic districts, several National Register designations, and many other educational projects. Directed Emily was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Thomas Jefferson Champion, Jr.; her parents, Lola Estelle Allison Feaster and Marshall McClanahan Feaster, II and her brother Marshall McClanahan Feaster III all of Brevard, NC; and her sister, Mary Alice Feaster Miller of Charlotte, NC. She also leaves behind her dedicated and loving caregivers and medical team, better known as Team Champion: Georgia Williams, Lola Harp, Donna Rico, Donna Hancock, Candy Slocum, Yvonne Martin, Jane Shellhorse Bennett, Zuella Wendell; Dr. Roger Hiser and the staff at Cartersville Internal Medicine; and the exceptionally compassionate, competent nurses and staff with Coosa Valley and Amedysis Hospice. Graveside services will be held on , 21, 2015 at 11:00 at Oak Hill (319 North Erwin Street; Cartersville, GA 30120; (770) 387-5604) with a reception following at Grand Oaks [302 West Main Street Cartersville, GA 30120 (Between Fite St and Tabernacle St)]; (770) continued... |
