Obituary: Bennis, John Michael, 77, retired Army Officer, Florida Corrections Officer and active church member, passed away in Tampa, Florida on 1, 2016. He is survived by his loving wife, Josette; his son, John and his wife, Betsey and their children, Kadie and John Dalton; his son, Darrell and his wife, Silvia and their children, Melony and Caroline; his sister, Janice Stern and her husband, Mark; his sister, Carol and her husband, William. John was born in Astoria, Long Island, New York, and lived in Pennsylvania and New Jersey until he graduated from Seton Hall University in 1960. Entering the Army in 1961, he served 28 years on active duty as an officer of Infantry and Military Intelligence ultimately retiring as a Colonel. His assignments included a combat tour in the Republic of Vietnam and positions of increasing responsibility culminating as Division Chief, Counter Terrorism Branch at the National Security Agency where he was part of the White House briefing team. His served at locations in Georgia, Massachusetts, Germany, Virginia, Korea and Japan. His decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Bronze Star with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Vietnam Service Medal. Upon retiring from the Army, John came to Tampa in 1990 where he began a second career as Probation Officer in the Florida Department of Corrections during which he was selected as Corrections Probation Officer of the Year. Also active in his Church, John was a Charter member of the St. Paul Council of the Knights of Columbus. Serving as Grand Knight for two years leading to a Star Council award. He also served as Membership Chairman. John’s hobbies have included basketball, tennis, gardening, fishing and fully supporting his wife and kids many endeavors and activities. He loved to entertain and his most recent hobbies were working on the computer, puzzles and collecting Santas. The family will receive friends at Blount & Curry in Carrollwood on , 3, 2016 from 5 to 8 PM. service is at St. Paul’s Catholic Church on , 4, 2016 at 10 AM. Obituary: Bill would like you to know. upon fear of having his driving and roaming privileges revoked, he has opted to take that grand highway to heaven where he can endlessly enjoy cruising in his car, laughing, fishing and eating anything he wants and reuniting with his beloved baby sister. Bill was 88 years old when he peacefully went home to his heavenly father on 9/5/17. He is preceded in death by his sister Shirley Nelson. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary, who we all know, spoiled him terribly! (thank-you Mom); his beloved daughter, Linda Bacheler and her husband, Scott, and his children Tori, Christi, Jeff and Tim Bacheler; his beloved daughter, Sharon Griffin and her husband Jim and their children, Shannon Kiefhaber and her husband Andy; and of course, Kayla Griffin. He had one great grandson, Austin and has another great-grandson due to be born in . He is also survived by his sister Doris Bush and many nieces, nephews and friends. Bill is remembered by family and friends foremost as a loving family man, always encouraging all of us to do our best and showing his belief in us with his constant words of affirmation. He would do anything for his family and we will miss him terribly. He is also remembered for his 44 year career with Norfolk Southern Railway, which ended when he retired as a District Sales Manager at the age of 57. He moved to Stuart, FL in 1990. He was an avid fisherman, spending as much time as he could at his second home in Big Pine Key, FL. He is remembered as a person who took great joy and pleasure in the simplest things and was always on a mission and had a great laugh that was infectious. Bill was also a proud veteran of the Korean War. Obituary: Benno Benninga died peacefully after a short illness at the Shell Point Retirement Community in Ft. Myers, FL on 11th at the age of 90. Benno is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Carla, son Ron and daughter in law Gigi; and sister Mia. He is preceded in death by his daughter Irene in 1972. Benno was born on 27, 1925 in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands to Jacques and Reina Benninga. He graduated from the University of Amsterdam in 1951 with a degree in economics and a MBA from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH in 1956. He married Carla Meijer in 1950. moving to Cincinnati, OH, Benno worked for Kahns Meat Packing (later a division of Sarah Lee Corp.) as Director of Purchasing for over 30 Years. Benno was a generous and charming individual with a great sense of humor who loved his family and friends. Along with Carla, he loved living on Sanibel Island for 20 years and they became an integral part of that community. His many friends cherished him and in turn enriched each others lives. Benno was passionate about educating the younger generation about the dangers of the Holocaust which he experienced growing up in Holland during World War II. He had a book published based on his fathers diary kept during this time called In Hiding and gave talks to groups of students as well as adults on this topic. A memorial service is scheduled for 17th at 10:30 am at The Grand Cypress Room/Woodlands at Shell Point Retirement Community with refreshments to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bennos life.
