Obituary: Sandy Beach died of kidney failure on 29, 2016. He was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, in 1930, in a three-story frame house at 411 S. Flagler Drive. His father, Stafford B. Beach, was born in the same house. The house was one of Florida's earliest landmarks, set on Fern Street, beside Lake Worth. Sandy was a 5th generation Floridian. His grandfather, John Beach, came to Sebastian, FL, in 1883, from Rome, NY. John Beach was a horticulturist and he established a nursery in Sebastian. John sold supplies to farmers by traveling up and down the coast by sailboat. John married Annie Bacon of Lake City, FL, who was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Bacon, and the granddaughter of Col. William T. Ross, of Jacksonville, FL. Col. Ross fought for the Confederacy in the Battle of Olustee. John and Annie Beach came to West Palm Beach in 1894, and bought their house-lot from Henry Flagler.

Sandy's maternal grandfather was F.E. Bryant. F.E. and his brother, Gilbert, helped found Lake Worth, FL. Then F.E. turned his eyes toward the Everglades, where he began the South Florida Sugar and Fruit Products , in Canal Point, FL. This company was later sold to the U.S. Sugar . The town of Azucar changed its name to Bryant, upon F.E.'s death.

Sandy attended the Palm Beach School through 8th grade. In the 9th grade he went to Sewanee Military Academy, in Sewanee, TN. He graduated in 1947, and then went to Cornell University. He graduated in Civil Engineering, class of 1951, with a BCE. During that time he married Joan Aten, also a Cornell graduate. Together they raised 3 children: Jeffrey Beach, Diana Beach Barrett, and Dr. Reginald Beach. There are 4 grandchildren: Quentin and Hailey Barrett of Seattle, WA, and Olivia and Sophia Beach of Arlington, VA.

Sandy began his working career at Republic Aviation, where he worked on the F104 fighter jet, in the field of Reliability and Safety. The family moved to Wellesley, MA, where they lived for 33 years. Sandy worked for Avco Missile Systems on 'smart' weapons, the Apollo rocket heat shield, and the Minuteman missiles. Those missiles are still in place. Sandy was an appointed member of the National Aerospace Industries Association, and he was an active member of Wellesley Country Club: he just loved to play golf.

Upon retirement, the Beaches returned to Florida and lived for many years on Hypoluxo Island. That property had been in the Beach family since it was a tomato farm. Sandy was President of the Lantana Library, and he was on the Board of the Atlantis Golf Club for 9 years. He was also President of the Centurians, a group helping the Habilitation of Palm Beach . He was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, a church started, in part, by his grandparents.

Sandy. Your friend. What a nice gentleman.

▰ Ruth Isabel Beach

Died January 13, … More Information
Ruth Isabel Beach, born June 7, 1931 departed this life Sunday January 13, 2015 in Largo, Florida. Ruth was 83. Obituary: Ruth Isabel Beach died suddenly in Largo, Florida on 13th, 2015, following several years of suffering from advanced dementia. Born on 7th 1931, she was 83 years and seven months old at the time of her death. She is survived by her brother Robert Beach, her daughter Jennifer Ruth (Gigi) Foster, several cousins and nephews, and two grandchildren, Neil Ewan de Montcalm Baker and Sienna Gigi dHauteclaire Baker.

Ruth Beach was born in Rochester, Minnesota, the second of five children of Thelma Hord and Howard Beach. She was raised in Oneida, New York and lived at various points in New York City, Princeton, NJ, Pittsburgh, PA, Sylvan Beach, NY, St Petersburg, FL, and Largo, FL. Though she died a widow, Ruth was married three times: to Joe Connolly, William Foster, and Stanley Krupa. Of these, her marriage to Mr Foster was the longest, at almost 30 years, and the sole union to produce offspring.

An academically gifted student, Ruth attended high school at Drew Seminary for Girls, studied as an undergraduate at Duke University and Antioch , and then earned her PhD in clinical psychology from Columbia Teachers in 1964. During her career she worked variously as a university educator, counsellor, and administrator at Princeton University, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Colgate University. While at CMU, Dr Beach served as the chairperson of the Commission on the Status and Needs of Women at CMU, whose final report in 1971 provided systematic documentation of widespread discriminatory practices, many of which were then quickly rectified by university administrators. Dr Beach was also active in the Greater Pittsburgh Psychological Association (serving as the chair of its Professional Psychology Committee) and the Pennsylvania Psychological Association (serving as its secretary) for several years. In addition to her university work, Dr Beach opened a clinical practice in 1977 and operated it for 13 years, serving during that time as one of Pittsburghs leading cognitive behavioral psychotherapists.

Apart from her many professional activities, Ruth was a world traveller. She steamed around the world twice with the Semester at Sea program (once as a faculty member); participated in the womens Peace Train movement across Europe; and embarked on travel adventures in Kenya, Brazil, Australia, China, Thailand, and far more countries too numerous to count. Intrigued by different cultures and peoples, and particularly keen to understand the position of women in diverse societies, she frequently shared her travel experiences and reflections through talks hosted by community groups and travelogue-style writing for newspapers such as the Oneida Daily Dispatch.

Ruth touched many lives with her giving nature, her infectious dynamism and her inquisitive spirit. A fund is being established in her name that will extend the reach of her influence by supporting innovative behavioral research investigations by women around the world. The fund, to be known as the Ruth Isabel Beach Memorial Fund, will target promising late-stage PhD students and early-career researchers based outside the first world and working in the behavioral sciences - particularly psychology and economics - whose work holds the potential to advance cross-cultural understanding, the status of women, and peace. Academic oversight and administrative direction for this fund will be provided by Ruths daughter Dr Gigi Foster, Associate Professor of Economics at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia (https://www.business.unsw.edu.au/our-people/gigifoster). For more details, or to make a contribution to the Ruth Isabel Beach Memorial Fund, please contact Gigi at gigi.in.oz@gmail.com.
