Obituary: a life long journey spanning 89 years, Maurice Buzz Barton passed away peacefully on 20, 2015. He was born in Bicknell, IN to Goldia and Floyd Barton. He was preceded in death by his mother Goldia Mae Jones Barton Caldwell, father, Floyd Barton and sister, Nan Caldwell Smith. Maurice was attending Brighton High School in MA when he left to join the US Navy during WWII. He served as a Gunners Mate for 2 years in the North Atlantic and one year in the Pacific. He entered the US Army and served as an Infantry Platoon leader and Artillery Commander during Korea and Vietnam. He also was a member of the National Guard and Reserve. He retired as a Major with 26 years of service. Mr. Barton was a graduate of Boston University. He worked for GMC Truck and Coach Division as a production engineer in Michigan and a District Manager in New York. He was a special agent with the United States Treasury Internal Revenue Service Intelligence Division and was part of the Boston Organized Crime Division. He transferred to the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and was stationed in Maine and Massachusetts retiring in 1978. During the 15 years with the IRS and the BATF, he served on three US Secret Service Presidential Campaign Support details in 1968, 1972 and 1974. In 1970 he was part of the federal governments Sky Marshal Detail for one year flying on Pan American Airlines. Buzz, wife Marilyn and son, Christopher moved to Sarasota, FL in 1980 from Bowdoinham, ME and he became actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America and the Tuttle Elementary School PTO. He served as a Webelos Den Leader with Pack 24, Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 24, and Explorer Advisor with Post 1. He served as Camp master, Merit Badge Counselor, District Training Chairman, District Commissioner and was a member of the Council Camping Committee and Properties Committee. He also served on the Executive Board. He was a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and a Chapter Advisor. He also served as a Provisional Scout Master, Program Director and Camp Director at Camp Flying Eagle. As a volunteer with BSA he was awarded the Scouters Key, Scouters Training Award, Commissioners Arrowhead, Life Oak Award, District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver. He completed Woodbadge Training and served on a Woodbadge Training Staff. Buzz served three years as the President of the Tuttle Elementary PTO and assisted with the physical education and special education programs. Maurice was a member of Rural Lodge A. F & A.M Quincy Massachusetts, Trinity Commandery #16 and Sahib Shrine Sarasota, FL. He was also a Life Member of the National Rifle Association and a certified rifle coach. He was a certified Master Gardener. He also kept honey bees both in Maine and Florida, loved boating and fishing, was a basket weaver, carved duck decoys and made his own fishing rods and made his own Merrymeeting Bay duck boat. Buzz and Marilyn traveled the lower 48 states in Motorhomes for many years visiting family and making new friends. Mr. Barton is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marilyn Hazard Barton; daughter, Lorelei Barton Camp (Neal) of Willison, VT; son, Mark Barton (Cheryl) of Topsham, ME and son, Christopher Barton (Sheri) of Bradenton, FL. He is also survived by grandsons, Erik Camp (Aida), Drew and Scott Camp, Travis Barton (Krista), Ryan Barton (Kelly); granddaughters, Mikaela and Morgan Barton; great grandsons, Grady and Emmett Barton and step great granddaughter, Kirah Smith. Maurice is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Betty Cole and her husband, Donald Cole, many cousins, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Resurrection House, 507 Kumquat Ct., Sarasota, FL 34236 or Shriners Childrens Hospital, c/o Sahib Shine, 600 N Beneva Rd., Sarasota, FL 34232. Visitation will be held on Mon. Apr. 27, 2015 at 10 am until the time of the Masonic Service at 11 am at Palms-Robarts . Burial will take place at Sarasota National at 1 pm. |
