Obituary: Baldasare, Fred, 91 of Brooksville, FL, passed peacefully at his residence on 22, 2015. He is survived by his sister, Maxine Miller of Largo, FL, many loving nieces and nephews and special friend and companion “Bambi”. Born in Willisville, Ohio on 9, 1924, Fred had a most interesting and diverse life. Training as a paratrooper in the US Army served as a spring board for life as a professional boxer and most notably, a SCUBA diver and instructor. He held many world records including the first person to swim both the English Channel and the Straits of Gibraltar underwater. He was also an actor and model for several Hollywood productions both in front of and behind the camera. Later in life, he owned and piloted the largest glass bottom tour boat in the Bahamas. A committal service with military honors will be held at the Florida National , Bushnell, FL on , 18, 2015 at 1:00pm. |

Obituary: Peter Stanley Buffalo Balcunas, 69, of Davie, Florida, passed away on 28, 2016. Mr. Balcunas was born in Brockton, Massachusetts in 1946 to the late Walter and Ellen Balcunas. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966 after attending Murray State University, and served as an infantryman in the Vietnam War. He later served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve with the 4th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison , retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant after more than two decades of distinguished service. In 1976 Mr. Balcunas earned a Criminal Justice degree from then Broward Community . He joined the long blue line at the Fort Lauderdale Police Department where he described his job as enforcing the law, and protecting life and property. His greatest love was working and dedicating his free time to the Northwest Fort Lauderdale area. When he was off duty, Peter worked with the youth of the area. He would chain up a punching bag to the chin-up bars at Sunland Middle School and youngsters often came over to hit the bag. He started a following that would eventually lead to a longstanding reputation as a well-respected public servant and mentor. During the day, Peter worked at Dillard High School and Ft. Lauderdale High School where he influenced the lives of countless students as the school resource officer. Peter consoled students who were struggling with various problems and advocated for students in court who needed a chance to overcome their mistakes. He was later assigned to Community Development and was also involved with Owners Meetings. Later, Mr. Balcunas worked as a school resource officer at Stranahan High School. Near the end of Peters police career, he became the project director for the Fort Lauderdale Police Departments Juvenile Alternative Motivation (JAM) program. This program dedicated its efforts to improve the Northwest and Southland Park areas by funding playgrounds, after school and summer activities, performing arts, academic competitions, and athletics. There were over 400 youth involved in the JAM program at that time. Buffalo retired from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department in 2004, committing 28 years to the community he adored. Until he passed away, he was still coaching young boxers at the Davie Police Athletic League (PAL) Boxing Club. He was quoted as saying he loved being approached by members of the community who would say, Buffalo, I want you to meet my [son, daughter grandson or granddaughter]. He would sigh and reflect, My! How the time goes by. Many of his friends, family, and the community credit Buffalo for saving their lives, offering them opportunities for greater futures. Before Peter joined the force, he boxed as both an amateur and professional in the early 1970s. Then he began a career as a boxing coach at L.A. Lee YMCA and Sunland Park (Carter Park). His boxers competed in tournaments, including the U.S. Olympic Trials, and earned state and national championships. His career as a coach and USA Boxing official extended into the Florida Gold Coast Amateur Boxing Association, the Florida Golden Gloves Association, and the Olympic Training in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was selected to coach the USA Boxing Team at the 1995 Pan American Games in Argentina and 1998 Goodwill Games in New York. Peter was also the first alternate coach for the 2000 Sydney, Australia Summer Olympics. He coached international boxing programs in Vanuatu and Tonga, and he managed USA boxing teams for tournaments in England, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine. He is survived by his wife, Digna D. Balcunas of Davie; two sons, Eric P. Balcunas of Arlington, VA and Joseph A. Balcunas of Medina, TN; two daughters, Annalia B. Balcunas of Davie, FL and Cristina G. Jones of Franklin, TN; two grandchildren, Jillian and Jonathan Balcunas of Medina, TN; three sisters, Lynn Baker of Naples, FL, Janice Aveyard of West Palm Beach, FL, and Susan Balcunas of New York, New York, and numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held on , 1, 2016 from 7-9 pm at Forest Lawn South and Memorial Gardens in Davie, Florida, at the Pyramid Chapel. A funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 am on , 2, 2016 at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church in Fort Lauderdale with a burial to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Davie, Florida.
