Obituary: Werner C. Brown of Wilmington, DE died peacefully at Stonegates in Greenville, DE on 8, 2015 at the age of 95. Born in Berlin, Germany on 18, 1919, he arrived in America via Ellis Island in 1923. Most of his childhood was spent in Currituck, NC and later in Ocean View, VA near Norfolk, where he was a track and football star at Maury High School. He attended Duke University on a football/track scholarship where he earned a bachelors degree in Chemistry, won the senior prize for Ideal Student and, most significantly, fell in love with a smart and beautiful classmate, from Wilmington NC, Maude Bucie Bulluck. graduation from Duke in 1942, he moved to Wilmington, DE to join Hercules, Inc. (now Ashland Chemical) as a chemist at the Research and married Bucie that . moved to Lawrence KS in 1944, where he spent two years at the Sunflower Ordnance Works, a government- owned facility operated by Hercules, making explosives for the war effort. He returned to Wilmington with Hercules in 1945 to serve as a research supervisor, then product supervisor, before advancing through a series of promotions in sales and management, to General Manager of the Polymers Dept. and Board member in 1966, becoming a Vice President the same year. He was elected President and Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee of Hercules in 1970, serving in those positions for eight years and becoming Chairman of the Board from 1978 until his retirement in 1981. To Werner, there was no substitute for dedication, hard work and planning. He gave his all to Hercules and viewed his co-workers at all levels as if they were family in a family business, celebrating their successes, and mourning their losses, as they did his. He became well-known in the chemical industry, serving as a director of a number of trade organizations including the American Chemical Society, the Society of Plastics Industry and two that he also chaired, the Manufacturing Chemists Association and the Société de Chimie Industrielle, which awarded him its highest honor, the Palladium Medal, in 1975 for his contributions to international chemistry. In 1973 he was appointed by President Nixon to the Presidents Export Council where he served for three years, and from 1976-80 served on the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia where he was appointed Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the Audit Committee. He also served on the Boards of Directors of an array of corporations, including Delaware Trust (now part of Wells Fargo), Delaware Power & Light (now Delmarva Power and a part of PEPCO), Diamond State Telephone (now Verizon Delaware) and Wilmington Trust of Florida (now part of M&T Bank), as well as on Boards of a variety of non-profits, including the Wilmington Medical , United Way of Delaware, Metropolitan YMCA, and Family Service Organization, and in earlier years as President of the Deerhurst Civic Association and his fraternity at Duke, Alpha Tau Omega and as Vice President of the A.I. duPont High School PTA. Werner devoted much time and energy to higher education. He served on the Duke University Board of Trustees for 12 years (1973-85), chairing committees and serving as Vice Chairman of the Board (declining to serve as Chairman due to the intensive travel and time requirements). He also served on the Board of Trustees of the University of Delaware, his adopted alma mater, for 23 years (1971-94), chairing its Finance Committee for two decades and being named Trustee Emeritus of the University when his active Board service ended. He also served on the Executive Council of the Harvard Business School (1968-70). He was an active member of The Wilmington Club, where he served on the Board of Governors and as President, and Wilmington Country Club where he served on the Board of Directors. He was also a member of a National Golf Club for a number of years, giving up his green jacket in 1981 in a rare lapse of judgment before his sons could intervene. Werners three primary interests in life over and above his career with Hercules and charitable endeavors were family, sports and gardening. He was a fine squash racquets player and enjoyed golf and tennis. But track was the sport at which he truly excelled. Captain of the Duke track team in 1942, he set the conference record in the 440 yard dash, holding it for over 15 years, ran a leg on the Duke 440 yard relay team that turned the fastest college time in the nation in 1942 and anchored the mile relay team that won the Penn Relays that same year. Had World War II not forced cancellation of the Olympics, he may well have qualified for the U.S. team. In 1993 he was inducted into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame. He was an ardent family man, utterly devoted to his wife Bucie and seven children. He brought them, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren, as well as the in-laws daring enough to join the Brown tribe, immeasurable joy with his positive energy, love, sense of humor, forgiving spirit and understated southern charm. He was not simply loved by them, but worshiped. The female Brown in-laws express particular appreciation that he served as an ideal model of a loving and respectful husband who did not leave cooking and cleaning to the women. He was also held in fond regard by the scores of friends brought home by his seven children as teens who were welcomed into his Old Kennett Road home and its expansive front yard that served as the site of the annual Brown Bowl football games for a generation. He was predeceased by his eldest child, Curt, a first lieutenant in the Army Infantry, who died in combat in Vietnam in 1968, and by his wife Bucie in 1986, both deaths fracturing a heart more fragile than he outwardly displayed. Happily, several years following Bucies death, he fell in love with and married Isabella (Iz) Tarumianz continued...
