Obituary: Norma Shirley (Abruzzo) Bzullak died on 23, 2017 at St. Mary in West Hartford after suffering a severe stroke in . She was the daughter of Anthony Abruzzo and Anna (Rossito) Abruzzo and the wife for 40 years of Michael H. Bzullak. She was born in Hartford and attended Hartford schools. Norma was a renaissances woman. She had experience in the theater, she was student of the English language and liked to write notes and letters to friends, she was into fashion design and home decorating, and she had a great sense of humor. She worked as a legal secretary for several years and in other small businesses in Hartford during her career. But the job she loved the most was at Independence Unlimited Inc., a non-profit where handicapped people helped and taught other handicapped people how to live independently. She was the only able-bodied person in the office and she really enjoyed helping her colleagues and their clients. Normas sister Mary and niece Barbara started a Little Theater group in Hartford and Norma participated; acting and stage managing. She really wanted to do set design but never had the opportunity. Norma had a large vocabulary, having worked with litigation attorneys where the choice of words and their interpretation are very important in the courtroom. She was also a crossword addict for several years and she would actually read the dictionary for fun. She wrote beautiful thank you notes after dinner invitations and gifts she received. And she carried on a 15-year pen-pal relationship with a woman she met on a trip to Tuscany that grew into a very strong friendship. Normas language skills also expanded into a foreign language. Being the youngest child, she lived with her mother for a few years after the other siblings left the nest. Over time she learned Italian without even knowing it. Her mother would ask her in Italian to do things and she would do them without any hesitation or requests for explanations. Her mother eventually told Norma that she knew the language. This skill was useful on her 2 trips to Italy. Norma was always fashionably dressed. And she created many of her own outfits on her mothers 100 year old Singer treadle sewing machine which she inherited when her mother died. Later in life she upgraded and refreshed her wardrobe by donating her existing old clothes to the Salvation Army and starting to shop at Forever 21, H&M, and Madrag. With the wisdom that comes with age and her large vocabulary, she had a witty and sometimes profound comment for any conversational situation. She was always entertaining her caregivers and therapists at St. Mary . Norma was predeceased by siblings Mary Tolisano, Lee Magaldi, Violet Perkins, Margaret Abruzzo, and Anthony Abruzzo. Beside her devoted husband, Michael Bzullak, she is survived by her sister Josephine OConnor, her nephew, William OConnor and his wife Cheryl, grandnephew Howard Canistraro and his wife Colleen. Michael wishes to thank all the givers, Therapists and Nurses who took care of Norma with love and compassion at St. Mary . You are all truly Angels. Calling hours will be held at the Taylor & Modeen 136 South Main St., West Hartford on 27 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and on 28 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Burial will follow at Fairview , West Hartford.
