Obituary: Doris Douglas Butler passed quietly away 2, 2015 at Hughes and Rehabilitation, West Hartford, Connecticut. She was 92. Doris led a long, happy, and productive life. She was devoted to her husband, her sons, and the Windsor, Connecticut community. Doris was born in 1923 to Eleanor Cook and Barton Marsh Douglas in an apartment on Elm Street, Windsor. The family moved (ca. 1930) to a brick house on Ridgewood Road, where she found—in addition to her brother, Barton Marsh Douglas, Jr.—a gang of neighborhood kids to play with including Mildred (Sis) Ashmead, Dick Morse, and Eleanor Ruth Barber. Doris enjoyed lessons in dance and piano; she graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Academy, West Hartford and Colby Junior , New London, New Hampshire. Doris worked at Travelers Insurance during the war not too far from her fathers site of employment at Hartford Fire. Wedding in 1945, Doris and Bob enjoyed an itinerant but rewarding life in the Northeast as Bob accepted academic posts at The Hun School of Princeton (New Jersey), UConn (Storrs), Douglass (New Brunswick, New Jersey), The Choate School (Wallingford), Saint Johnsbury Academy (Vermont), Tilton School (Tilton, New Hampshire), Gettysburg (Pennsylvania), and The Gunnery School (Washington, Connecticut). In addition to serving as Bobs chief counselor, Doris became Mom to Douglas Robert Butler (1951) and Donald Lee Butler (1954). Family pursuits included camping, and backyard sports like football, wiffleball, badminton, croquet, and horseshoes. Doris and Bob bought a summer cottage on Lake Waukewan in New Hampton, New Hampshire, affording the family opportunities to swim, sail, and fish. Doris and Bob loved to play golf in Laconia, Meredith, and Laconia. Doriss parents had a cottage across the lake, so diving off Barton and Eleanors dock and seafood fests on their screened porch became standard summer happenings. In winter, Doris liked to join her sons in sledding or tobogganing down Connecticut hillsides and ice skating at Washington Park in Windsor. Doris was a vociferous supporter of Choate School wrestling, living and dying with every headlock and takedown. Winter also brought Yuletide visits to Barton and Eleanor in Windsor and to Bobs parents, Ernest and Grace Butler, in Wethersfield. With the passing of her parents and Bobs retirement, Doris found herself home again in the Ridgewood Road house, where she lived from about 1980 until the final two years of her life. With Bobs death in May 2001, Doris lost a faithful companion, she but she remained committed to lifetime pursuits. As a member of The Windsor Historical Society, she loved to guide tourists through the old homes of Windsor; she regularly displayed her paintings with The Windsor Palette and Brush Club; and, with a group of friends, Doris (a season-ticket holder) religiously attended UConn Womens Basketball games. In her black Ford Taurus—with alloy wheels and rear spoiler—Doris drove her friends to The First Church of Windsor or to one of the local restaurants—The Maine Fish Market Restaurant in East Windsor and Doms were favorites. Doris also braved Connecticut River Valley heat to sell items at the annual DAR tag sale and maintained a basement of unsold crockery to prove it. Doris read The Hartford Courant every morning with her Cornflakes; when there was no milk in the kitchen, she cheerfully poured orange juice on her cereal. Reading a mystery or a romance always occupied part of Moms day—as did talking to her immediate neighbors (Patty, Sue, and Monica)—or having an adventure with her best friend, Dottie Marsh. Doris and Dottie sampled annually the agrarian delights of The Big E. Doriss own vegetative ventures consisted, primarily, of a finely-manicured lawn and a small patch of marigolds off the front porch. Doriss penchant for keeping things simple extended to the many community gatherings that happened at 16 Ridgewood Road: her Bible Study Group and Book Club could expect a frozen apple pie served on plastic plates. For Doris, who had a houseful of fine china, the company mattered most: she cherished her friends and would work tirelessly to foster their happiness. Doris loved attending plays at The Hartford Stage, taking painting lessons in Old Lyme, travelled to Greece with Bob and to England with her painting buddies. She also loved the art museums of Boston and New York City. Even at the end of her days, Doris displayed an artists eye and an appreciation for nature. A pot of impatiens, a pepper plant, or a maple leaf could make her happy. Sitting under a maple tree this past , doing nothing but checking out the pots of flowers at Hughes and Rehab, Doris said to her son Doug This is perfect. And it was. Doris never lost her native good humor and zest for living. To Dougs I love seeing you, Mom, shed reply Well, I love to be seen! In reaction to the sudden silence in the hall, Mom could be heard to say The Sheriff must have arrived. Her sons new shoes, chunks of fresh watermelon, a friendly Hi, Doris from a Hughes CNA or nurse or housekeeper—the little stuff mattered and improved her life. And Doris, even with compromised mobility and language skills, found means to touch the lives of those venturing into her circle of grace. Doris is survived by her two sons and families: Douglas R. Butler; his daughter, Katherine Sandidge Butler; and his girlfriend, Denise Matrazzo; Donald Lee Butler; his wife, Jane Butler; and their children, Gordon Douglas Butler and Michelle Lee Butler; Jean Douglas, sister-in-law and her family. The family wishes to thank the Southwest staff and all of those of Hughes and Rehabilitation who shared moments with Doris for their uncompromising dedication to keeping Mom healthy and happy! Obituary: Christine Tina (Barone) Butler, 85, of South Windsor, beloved wife of John C. Butler, went home to be with the Lord on 30, 2016. Born in Hartford on 24, 1930, daughter of the late Nicholas and Minnie Barone, she lived in East Hartford most of her life and graduated from East Hartford High School, class of 1950. Tina always had a smile on her face for everyone and was full of energy until the end. She adored her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and everyone in her big loving family. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, her son John Butler of Kennesaw, GA; daughter Laura LaFond and her husband Ray of Manchester, CT; her sister Jean Barone of South Windsor, CT; nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
