Obituary: Joan (Fergus) Boardman, wife, mother, sister, friend passed away on 8, 2016 at her home after a long illness. Her daughter was by her side. Joan was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Brown) Fergus. Joan was born in Liverpool, England on 8, 1930. She came to the United States in 1949 where she met her future husband, William (Bill), while working at the First National in East Hartford. married on 31, 1951 and lived in East Hartford for several years. Joan retired from the Senate Clerks Office at the Connecticut State Capitol where she worked for many years. Joan and Bill shared a love for the Connecticut shoreline and had many wonderful times with family and friends at Hawks Nest in Old Lyme. While they were still both employed they looked for a small place to buy so they could spend more time at the shore. found a place in Black Point, Niantic but when they retired and moved in, they realized the cottage was too small and built their retirement home a few streets away. Joan had a tremendous love for animals and she rescued countless cats that were considered lost causes. Her love for birds is legendary in Black Point. It gave her great pleasure to indulge these creatures. She even named some of them. Surely Ollie the crow will truly miss her. She was also a staunch Red Sox fan and had her own Green Monster named Wally. Joan and Bill were members of St. Anns Episcopal Church in Old Lyme. Joan is survived by her daughter Rosemarie Balcom of Norwich. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Brannan and a sister, Margaret Kokojan. Obituary: Rose Deckel Blutt, 91, of Farmington, Connecticut, formerly of Windsor, CT, died on 1st, 2017. She was the mother of Jay B. Blutt, of Simsbury, CT and Mitchell J. Blutt, MD of New York, NY. She also leaves her daughters-in-law, Joni Blutt and Margo Krody Blutt as well as her grandchildren, Adam M. Blutt, Andrew B. Blutt, Gillian C. Blutt, Eliza M. Blutt and Emerson B. Blutt. She was married to the late Herbert Blutt for 63 years prior to his death in 2007. She is the last surviving sibling of Florence Deckel Levine, Marcia Deckel Kress and Harold Deckel. Rose attended Evander Childs High School in the Bronx. At eighteen years old, she married Herbert Blutt during a leave from his military service in World War II. Rose worked as a legal assistant for Harold Luxemburg, the distinguished Manhattan attorney. Roses legal acumen was identified early and she was encouraged to study for the New York Bar, absent attending college or law school, which was an occasional path to becoming an attorney in New York at that time. She opted to forego that opportunity in order to support her husband, Herberts engineering education and career and to focus on the raising of her children. Upon relocating with her family to the Hartford, CT area, she joined the law firm of Sudarsky and Sudarsky of Hartford where she was employed for many years. In addition to her work and family responsibilities, Rose was politically active as a classic FDR Democrat. She was also involved in a variety of social causes including many years of tutoring non-English speaking Soviet Jewish immigrants to the US by way of her Yiddish speaking skills. Rose was also the financial manager of her family. While her husband and children were aware of this role, they were not aware of the degree to which she focused on investment activities with the small savings generated from middle income salaries. Upon Herbs death, in 2007, Mitchell and Jay learned that Roses hobby of investing yielded very special results. Rose, together with Herb, were part of a pioneering community of Jewish individuals in the rural northern suburbs of Hartford who nurtured a new, small synagogue in the region--Congregation Beth Ahm in Windsor, CT. She was active there through much of her adult life. Rose was also an avid swimmer with a great love for the water. She and Herb loved to travel, which they did with passion. Rose was a strongly opinionated and outspoken person. She was brilliant, worldly and endlessly self-educated. She was also fiercely loyal to her family, particularly to her two sons. She was also a constant defender of those in need. But little interfered with her passion for the New York Yankees. So the story goes that Jay was born on 30, 1953 to the sound of Yogi Berra hitting a game winning home run in the World Series for the Yankees. In 2003, Rose suffered from an unusual stroke, effecting the section of the brain which controls the wake/sleep cycle. She fully recovered from this stroke with no apparent neurological deficit. However, from that time forward, perhaps with some slowly progressive dementia, the aggressive edge in Roses personality appeared to abate. She became almost constantly content and agreeable. As a result, Rose is the subject of the unfinished book, being written by her two sons, STROKE OF LUCK. Rose was gifted with an adorable sense of humor, intertwined with her personality features of stubbornness and determination. It never left her, through thick and thin, until the last weeks of her life where she was mostly asleep. She was a remarkable conversationalist, lecturer, source of wisdom, Rock of Gibraltar, coach and counselor, even in her last days. She expressed love and she received love, every day of her life. This included with cats, particularly her beloved Smidgens, who lived with her family for 17 years after arriving as a stray. For the last several years of her life, Rose received very special care and love from Elizabeth Gaynor of East Hartford, CT. developed a friendship that transcended Elizabeths professional responsibilities to Rose. Its only fitting to use a Rose Blutt expression to bid this phase of her existence farewell--So long. So long, Rose. Services and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers please make a memorial donation to the charity of your choice. For online condolences please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com |
