Thank You for Coming and helping the Bayreuther Family share in this Memorial. I am Leigh Bayreuther, Chriss oldest son. I wanted to take a few minutes and try to put some historical perspective to the life of this exceptional man, my Father. He was born in 1924, the middle of the Roaring Twenties. By the time he could begin to be aware of things, at age 5 or 6, the Stock Market Crash of 1929 had occurred, and with it the beginning of the Great Depression. His parents were immigrants from Germany, so his upbringing was one of frugality and making do. His father was a machinist and skilled in working with metal. Dad grew up working with his hands, and helping to repair the few things that they had. His Elementary and High School years, 1932 to 1942, were fully immersed in the worst of the Great Depression and the Social Upheaval of that time. Dad graduated from Chapman Technical High School, in New London, Connecticut in of 1942. By the time Dad graduated, The Day that will Live in Infamy, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, 7th 1941 had already happened, and with it the United States Declaration of War and entry into World War II. Dad joined the Navy in 1943 and was accepted into an accelerated Educational Program to train Naval Officers. 100, 000 young men Nationwide were accepted into the V-12 program, as it was called, and 50, 000 graduated. He studied Civil Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and while in that program was commissioned as a Navy Ensign. During the World War II years he was at RPI and did not serve in that conflict. 2 Dad graduated RPI in 1947 and was released from active duty, but was re-activated in 1950 to serve in the Korean Conflict. Dad ended his military career in 1952 as a First Lieutenant, and returned to Niantic and his family home, a portion of which was now becoming a Marina and a Boat Storage yard. His Father, Chris II and his Brother Warren had literally kept the home fires burning in his absence and when Dad returned from Korea, he put his Civil Engineering studies to good use. all got busy turning a hilly corn field and a muddy swamp into a fine Boat Storage and Repair Yard, and a Marina. Chris married Mom on 3rd, 1948 and Warren soon followed suit. Over the next 15 years or so, they each had 5 children. In a hunting accident, they lost their Dad in 1955. The next 30 years were spent in building and building and building and building. Docks were designed and a pile driving mechanism on a floating barge was designed and built to drive the pilings that supported the docks. Then the docks were built. Structures to house and repair watercraft were designed and built. Being resourceful, and frugal, they bought an old crane, an old dump truck, and an old bulldozer, repaired them all and learned to run them. built a drag-line dredge and learned to run it. And during those same 30 years they re-configured the landscape, deepened the water, filled in the swamp, built bulk heading from used railroad ties to retain the dredged material, and continued to build, or add to more buildings. constructed a marine railway and then designed and built a series of cross-tracks so when they hauled boats out of the water, they could move them to storage on land, and go back and haul another boat. In between all these building activities they repaired boats, bought and sold boats, and ran the boat yard and marina business. For all of this time, both Chris and Warren lived within walking distance of their Pride and Joy. So they were continued... |
