Obituary: Mary Marguerite Hay-Brooks was born in Pontiac, Michigan on 16, 1920 to Josephine Bustance-Hay and George Warren Hay. The family moved from Pontiac, Michigan to Detroit, Michigan in 1922 where Mary's sister, Marjorie Hay-Hughes was born in , 1924. Her father had health problems, and they moved to the grandfather's farm in Ionia, , near Morrison Lake from 1925 to the spring of 1932. Her parents and sister also moved to Lansing, Michigan for a brief time while Mary lived with her grandparents and attended Clarksville High School, where she was a member of the girls varsity basketball team. In 1933 her parents and sister returned to Clarksville and her father commuted to Lansing General Motors Fisher Body until his retirement in 1957. Mary graduated from Clarksville High School on May 28, 1937. In 1938 Mary attended business school in Detroit while living with her aunt and uncle. In the spring of 1939, she was employed for 2 1/2 years in the Credit Office of J.W. Knapp department store in Lansing. On 9, 1939 Mary married Lyle C. Brooks in her parents' Clarksville living room; the newlyweds took residence in Lansing. While attending an evangelical service at South Baptist Church on the invitation of a friend the couple decided to dedicated their lives to Christ. chose Matt 6:33 as their verse, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you". Lyle worked as an electrician until being drafted into the Army, living for a brief period in Oklahoma, until Lyle received orders to the Pacific where he served his country for a total of 43 months. moving back to Lansing Mary was employed by the Federal Selective Service (State of Michigan) as a bookkeeper and auditor. Just prior to Lyle's discharge from the Army, Mary purchased a single family bungalow on Greenlawn Street. Lyle returned to the States in 1945, his bride began working at Motor Wheel Corporation, and he resumed working as an electrician, joining the union. During this time the couple attended Seymour Avenue Methodist Church. Lyle was an avid amateur ham radio operator and together they developed many close friendships and were active in the local chapter until they moved to Arizona in 1986. In 1950 Lyle and Mary's only child, James Harold Brooks, was born. That same year the family purchased and relocated to a three-plex on West Saginaw Street. On James Harold's 3rd birthday they moved into a brand new home on Northwest Avenue. In the fall of 1966 the Brooks family began attending Maranatha Baptist Church where Mary served in the Children's Ministry and taught School. Mary was an avid cook and loved to entertain friends, family, and visiting missionaries in their home. Mary and Lyle's son, James served his county during the Vietnam War and in 1970 married Bonnie Ward. Lyle retried in 1981 from Superior Electrical and Mary retired in 1982 from Michigan State University Controllers Office after 26 years of employment. retirement the couple enjoyed traveling from 1982-1986 and then settled in Arizona in of 1986, close to their children, and lived at Sun Lakes. Lyle departed for his Heavenly home on 28, 1994 and Mary joined him in their Heavenly home on , 24, 2015 at 11:20 a.m. at the Dobson (Hospice of the Valley). Mary is survived by her son, James, daughter-in-law Bonnie, grandchildren James Harold Brooks, Jr., Heather Lane Brooks-Shaw, Melissa John-Brooks, Jonathan Shaw, great-grandchildren, Breanna Mary, Brook Ashleigh, Jacob Lyle, Kaden Thomas Whitley, Sarah Allison Mae, and Kelsey Jill, "adopted grandsons" Mark and Matt Rosendale, brother and sister-in-law Arlen and Maebelle Brooks, 5 nieces and nephew, and numerous 1st and 2nd cousins. A Celebration Memorial Service will be held at First Baptist Church of Chandler, 3405 S. Arizona Avenue, Chandler, Arizona on , 28, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers direct donations to First Baptist Church of Chandler in Mary's memory. |
