Obituary: William David Byars, 87, passed away May 30, 2015 at the Bill Nichols Veterans Administration Facility in Alexander City, Alabama. He was born 5, 1927 to Thomas Fink Byars and Margaret Bell Gaines Byars in Decatur, Alabama.
He was married to the late Shirley Jane Williams Byars, formerly of Savannah, Georgia for 49 years. were married in Atlanta, Georgia in 1953 at Peachtree Christian Church.
He is survived by his youngest sister, Patsy Gayle Cassimus of Decatur. He also had another sister, the late Jo Anne Andrews of Athens; two sons and a daughter ; Steven Victor Byars of Auburn, Alabama; Kirkland Thomas Byars (Anne) of Vestavia Hills, Alabama and Rebecca Carol Byars Teague (Marc) of Decatur, Alabama. Mr. Byars had a third son, Randall Lance Byars of Decatur, who passed 10, 2004.
He is survived by six grandchildren: William David Byars II of Decatur; Tyler Tennis Teague and Garret Byars Teague of Decatur; and Bryant Daniel Byars, Nathan Christopher Byars and Zerah Margaret Byars of Vestavia Hills.
David grew up in West Decatur and attended Gordon Bibb Elementary and was a 1945 graduate of Decatur High School. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1943 and was a member of Troop 11 and the Flying Eagle Patrol at Central Baptist Church of Decatur. David later attended Auburn University in Business and Finance. In 1945, he was initiated by the Beta-Eta Chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. His roommate was Kenny Howard, long-time trainer for Auburn University football. Other fraternity brothers from Decatur are Judson Hawthorne and Ray Frederick.
graduation from Auburn in 1949, he received U.S. Army basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He was then transferred to Fort Bliss, Texas where he served for almost three years as a drill and supply sergeant for troops of the Korean War.
Employed by Commercial Credit in 1953, he later was employed by Ford Motor Credit and was branch manager of the North Alabama headquarters in Decatur for 28 years. During this time David cherished his staff of employees and the dealership teams for north Alabama and south central Tennessee.
A farmer, cattleman and passionate Auburn Tigers football fan, he managed Byars Hereford and Angus Farms for many years.
David always said, Keep the main thing, the main thing, which is now helping people accept Jesus Christ as their Savior.
Memorial services will be held in Irondale at Church of the Highlands Chapel at 5901 Overton Road off I-459 at Grants Mill on , 4, with visitation at 1 pm and a 2 pm memorial with Pastor Rock Hobbs presiding.
On , 6, at Ridouts Brown Service Chapel in Decatur on Memorial Drive, there will be a memorial service 11 am with visitation beginning at 10 am. Graveside services will be held at noon at Decatur . Pallbearers are: William David Byars II, Tyler Tennis Teague, Bryant Daniel Byars, Garret Byars Teague, Nathan Christopher Byars and Col. James Leonard Pillow USMC.

OBITUARY

BYARS, JR., WALTER RYLAND (85) died on 23, 2014 in his home. Mr. Byars is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mildred (Mickey) Rhodes Byars and their daughters, Debra B. Patterson (David) and Rebecca B. Pradat, and sons, Walter Ryland Byars, III (Teresa), and John Baxter Byars, eight grandchildren: Erin Whaley (Seth), Olivia Latham-Byars, Jonathan Byars, Meredith Byars, Parker Pradat, Lucie Pradat, Gunn Pradat, and Adair Byars, and two non-blood brothers, Alex W. Newton and Robert G. Esdale, Sr. He is also survived by family friend and caretaker, Celeste Crenshaw.

Mr. Byars was a native of Birmingham, attended Birmingham Public Schools, graduating from Phillips High School. Mr. Byars received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce and Business Administration (1948) and Bachelor of Laws Degree (1952), Juris Doctor Degree (1969) from the University of Alabama. Upon being graduated from law school, Mr. Byars served on active duty as LTJG in the United States Navy (1952-53), having been commissioned an Ensign in 1948, and honorably discharged as LT on 23, 1966. Byars became a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity at the University of Alabama in 1945, and remained active throughout his collegiate career, serving the Iota Iota Chapter as consul and quaestor. college, he served as Iota Iota Chapter advisor, member and later President of Iota Iota House Corporation and President of Birmingham and Montgomery Sigma Chi Alumni Chapters. As quaestor, Byars was instrumental in paying off the debt on the original Sigma Chi house; and thereafter, was instrumental in building two new chapter houses for Iota Iota, the last being dedicated in 2013. In 2012, Sigma Chi International selected him as a Significant Sig, and Iota Iota Chapter selected him as the first recipient of its Lifetime Service Award. Byars was also active in the legal profession having actively practiced for more than 60 years. Byars commenced the active practice of law in Troy, Alabama in 1953, moving to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1957 to join the Legal Department of Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph as an attorney, and in 1959 transferred to Birmingham to serve as its General Attorney-Alabama. In 1968, he re-entered the private practice of law in Montgomery with the law firm of Steiner Crum & Baker (later Steiner, Crum & Byars). Byars was admitted to Alabama courts in 1952 and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1969 and all the U.S. District and Appellate courts in Alabama. Mr. Byars served as President of the Pike and Montgomery Bar Associations, President of the Alabama State Bar and Chairman of its Junior Bar Section. During his tenure as President of the Montgomery Bar Association, it received the ABA Award of Merit for overall excellence (1979-80). He was also a Fellow and served as President of the International Society of Barristers and a Fellow of the American of Trial Lawyers, a Fellow and Life Member in Alabama Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation. Commencing in 2002, Byars served the City of Montgomery as City Attorney and later as Chief Legal Advisor until of 2014. Mr. Byars served as the first Board Chairman, AlaTrust, Inc. (2007-2008).

The family would prefer donations to The Legacy Campaign for Iota Iota at the University of Alabama in lieu of flowers.

Obituary: Stella M. Byars, age 80, of Tuscaloosa, died Aug. 22, 2010, at home. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park with Rev. Gary Bonner and Ransey ODaniel officiating and Sunset , a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson J. Byars; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.V. Cain; her brother, Frank Cain; and her daughter-in-law, Janie Sue Byars.

Survivors include her daughter, Deborah Spell; her son, Nelson J. Byars, Jr.; her sisters, Nadine Cain, Dorothy Thomas (Phil), and Ruby Hughes (Tommy); her brother, James E. Cain; her grandchildren, Joseph Taapken (Brandy) and Tonya Dixon; and four great-grandchildren.

She was involved many years in the Elks Lodge of Tuscaloosa, Moose Lodge, and VFW. She was such a kind and loving person who loved her flowers and gardens and had kind words for everyone. Words cannot express how loving and kind she was. She was the most wonderful mother and grandmother that could be.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Hughes, William Franklin, Phil Thomas, James Byars, Jimmy Lollar, and Bill Archie.

Honorary pallbearers are DCH Cancer doctors and nurses, Dr. Dwayne Tooson, First Wesleyan Academy, Sealy, Bryant Drywall, Hospice of West Alabama, Jack and Dene Tunnell, Karen Smith, Donna Rhea, Myrtis and Robert Hale, Evelyn Cockrell, and Deanna and David Williams.
