Obituary: Black, Kennard Powell, (Sr.): Kennard Powell Black, Sr. passed away 15, 2015, son of Vivian Thell Black and Fern Powell. He was born on 28, 1929 in Cortez, Colorado, because as he often stated, Thats where his mother was. He is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Jean L. Black, three children; Ken Jr., Kerrilyn Black, Chesley and Ron Black. He has nine grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren all of whom love him. Kennard was raised in Blanding, Utah. He attended school in Blanding, graduating from high school in May of 1947. That summer he went to work for the Government Blister Rust Control Project in Northeastern Washington State. Surprisingly he grew sufficiently tired of the government way of doing things . Kennard then returned to Blanding, as jobs were scarce, he went to work on another government project with a surveying crew. In the summer of 1948 he hired on with another surveying crew staking out a route for a City of Blanding water pipe line. His work performance on that crew earned him a referral to work with the State Road Commission Survey Crew. That job was on the highway between Delta, Utah and the Nevada state line. The crew quartered in the thriving metropolis of Garrison, Utah, a wide spot on the road, but it had a motel. While there, Kennard observed a beautiful, tall dark eyed beauty, smitten, he embarked upon some detective work I found she had a name. He also found that she was in the protective care of a local rancher and his wife, Lee and Zelma Dearden, her aunt and uncle. were not of persuasion to allow courting, not be put off, Kennard became friends with her big brother Bob. He was able to obtain information which included their Salt Lake City phone number. In the fall of 1948 as the Korean Conflict was beginning to simmer, he joined the U.S. Navy. Kennard persevered and was able to date the young lady several times all the while attempting to convince her of his high qualities as a suitor. His endeavors were interrupted by the US Navys request that he report to boot camp in San Diego, California. I wrote her several letters but she never answered them. Not once. boot camp he was stationed at the Naval Air Base in El Centro, California. His first assignment was with the base fire department. In late 1949 he was called into the base personnel office where he was informed that his high scores on the entrance exam qualified him for consideration into Annapolis Naval Academy. His eyesight disqualified him for entrance there; however he was transferred to the technician school in Memphis, Tennessee. completion of the school in early 1950, he was sent back to the airbase at El Centro. Meanwhile back in Salt Lake City, curiosity was at work on he dark haired beauty, she sent a letter to Kennard in care of his mother in Blanding. His mother, being the dutiful women she was, promptly forwarded it to Kennard now in El Centro. corresponded and in of 1950 he obtained a three day pass and went to Salt Lake to see her. Kennard cut a dashing figure in his uniform and they hit it off. Again persistence went to work and I spent several weekends hitch hiking to Utah to court her. In (1950), I got leave for New Year(s) and went to Salt Lake with very good intention of making this lovely girl my own. It worked and on 2, 1951 Kennard married Jean Larsen. Duty called and Kennard returned to El Centro, where his new bride joined him. Upon his discharge from the service, with the utilization of the GI Bill and his high merits and test scores, he was offered placement in two prestigious engineering schools (Purdue and the University of Utah) as well as the University of Arizona. He chose to attend The University of Utah in Salt Lake City, graduating with honors and a degree in electrical engineering. In 1957 he moved his young family to Scottsdale, Arizona where he was employed by Motorola at their GED plant located on McDowell Road and Granite Reef. There he was heavily involved with many classified programs involving space exploration. While working at Motorola, he was very active in Toastmasters, earning many awards and accolades. In the late 60s Kennard and Jean invested in some property in Lakeside, Arizona. He built two summer homes there with the help of his wife and indentured servants. One of his younger associates at Motorola once stated, He was a rocket scientist. He worked for Mother M (his words) until he retired in 1994. Also at this time the tremendous capabilities of personal computers were becoming evident and that his slide rule was fast becoming obsolete. Kennard enrolled in classes at Scottsdale Community to learn the mathematic abilities of the Lotus program , it was not long (one class) and the student was working with the teacher in forming intricate equations and solving them. Upon retirement Kennard and Jean split their time between Scottsdale and the White Mountains, later moving to Florence, summering in Show Low. Kennards early retirement years were filled with the need to keep busy; so much time was spent in the cutting of firewood, as with everything he did, most professional. So very much so that when the second summer home was sold, it was stipulated that the hundreds of cords of firewood encircling the lot was part of the sale. It should also be pointed out here that with the sale of that home, the neighbors lost a continuous source of firewood to pilfer as well. In 1999 - 2000 Kennard and Jean served an 18 month mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Jackson, Mississippi Mission. made many friends and enjoyed serving.
