Obituary: Wayne Otis Burris, 86, of Greeley passed away 30th, 2016 at the Hospice of Northern Colorado after a short illness. Wayne was born 4th, 1929 on a farm in Stockdale, Ohio. Wayne and his parents, John and Mable Burris, moved to Colorado one year after Waynes birth. Raised in Minturn and Gypsum, Wayne enjoyed hunting and fishing the many excellent lakes and rivers of the western slope. Wayne graduated from Eagle Valley High School in Gypsum. Wayne served in the US Navy from 1948 to 1952 and was a Korean War veteran. Wayne entered the service during peacetime, but was involuntarily extended shortly before his scheduled discharge date when the US entered the Korean War. In honor of his wartime service Wayne was selected by the "Honor Flight Network" organization and was flown to Washington, D.C. free of charge, and given a tour of the capitol and its many monuments. It was a proud sailor that at the age of 85 years old saw the capitol of the nation he served for the first and only time in his life. the Navy, Wayne had a janitorial service and later worked as a salesman at Garnsey and Wheeler and DeBrowns car lots. He shuttled cars for several local car dealers into his 80s. Wayne married Gloria Austin of Greeley, in of 1953. The couple had three sons: Timothy, Michael and Jamie. Wayne was active in the Boy Scouts and was Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 201 of Franklin Elementary School. In of 2009 Wayne and his eldest son Tim took a three week, nearly 5,000 mile road trip they dubbed The National Parks Tour visiting: Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks (Wyoming); Glacier National Park (Montana); Arches, Canyonlands and Zion National Parks (Utah); and the Grand Canyon (Arizona). The trip was a wonderful time of bonding between father and son, fondly remembered by both. Wayne is survived by his sons, Timothy Burris of Honolulu, Hawaii and Michael Burris of Greeley; brother Richard Burris of Gypsum; nephew, Paul Burris of Crawford; niece Lolene Burris-Carter of Gypsum; and other cousins, family members and friends. Wayne was predeceased by his parents John and Mable; his ex-wife Gloria; and his youngest son, Jamie. Per Waynes request his remains will be cremated, and the family will scatter his ashes in the Gypsum area he loved. No memorial services are planned, also by his request.
