Obituary: Clifford Orr Brookhart died 31, 2014 in Boulder Community Hospital from complications related to cancer. Cliff grew up in Lamar, CO. He graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a B.S. in biology and went on to earn a masters degree in science education from Michigan State University and a doctoral degree from University of Northern Colorado in educational administration. Cliff had a long and valued career as a respected educational leader in Colorado. His desire to create strong, public schools led him to serve at the state and local level in countless ways. Cliffs dedication to helping young people thrive and learn led him to teach high school science at Rocky Ford High School, CO and Cabrillo Senior High School in Lompoc, CA. He served as a school assistant principal at Kearney Junior High School, Commerce City, CO and principal at Longmont Senior High School. Cliff served as the school superintendent in Weld District RE-1 and Harrison School District 2 in Colorado Springs. Cliff impacted many future educational leaders through his leadership and teaching at the University of Denver and University of Northern Colorado. Cliff treasured his family. He is survived by his wife, Linda Brookhart and five children: Lisa Beasley (Ray), Bakersfield, CA; Toni Erickson (Brian), Stilwell, KS; Amy Levinson, Denver, CO; Megan Hanauer (Matt), Louisville, CO; Drew (Anne), Basalt, CO. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Tim and Lauren McConnell, Ashley and Sara Erickson, Jake and Kate Levinson, Rowan and Lucy Hanauer and a great-granddaughter he had yet to meet: Emma McConnell. He is also survived by his brothers, Byron Brookhart, Parker CO and Don Brookhart, Gold Hill, CO. He was pre-deceased by his parents Harry and Irene Brookhart. Cliff was a man of deep compassion; he was profoundly committed to help others learn. He was shaped and shaped others with his keen intelligence, love of nature, animals and humanity. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 1128 Pine St, Boulder CO 80303, , 20, 2014 at 11:30am. |

Obituary: .Velma passed peacefully in her sleep 28th, 2016 at the age of 99. Born in Boring, Oregon in 1916, Velma moved with her family to Minnesota in 1918. She graduated from Greenway High School in 1934 and went on to attend Itasca Jr. graduating in 1937 with an Associate Degree. She moved to Denver in 1943 where, in 1945, she married Charles Brooke. Married for 45 years, together they had four children, Fred, Liz (Carney, Jim), Rob (Jeri) and Norm (Shirley), 6 grandchildren (Steve, Kathy, Colin, Jonathan, Doug and Jeff) and 7 great grandchildren (Brinkley, Kaylee, Kensey, Brady, Avery, Nora and Bodhi). As a family they loved being outdoors, hiking, sleeping in tents, and cooking meals over an open fire in the mountains of Colorado. Velma continued camping well into her 90s. She and Charles enjoyed the early days of downhill skiing in Colorado where the only groomed slopes were the ones that skiers packed themselves by side stepping up the mountain. Velma and Charles traveled extensively throughout the world. Perhaps their most adventurous trip was to Manaus, Brazil in the middle of the jungle where they were almost robbed on the street. Velma never missed an opportunity to cheerfully hit the road and explore new places. One of Velmas fondest childhood memories was a week long family camping trip to Yellowstone National Park. This family adventure included a harrowing drive on mostly dirt roads, numerous flat tires, and frequently push-starting the Family car, a Dodge Victory-6. Her career included work at Budweiser Distributing and the Denver Public Schools. She gave of herself in volunteering at the University Hospital Gift Shop, Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, and she was an active member of the Windsor Gardens Optimist Club, Women Marines, and the Red Hat Society. Her military career began in 1943, when Velma, a small town girl from Coleraine, decided to serve her country and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. At the time, she was a secretary for the Minneapolis St. Louis (MLR) Railroad, and her boss, the Assistant Controller, asked her why a nice girl like her would want to go off and join the Marines. Not one to be deterred, Velma enlisted anyway and told the Marine Corps recruiter that she would like to be stationed in the recruiting office in Denver. "We don't let girls do those jobs" he explained. "Can't you make an exception?" was her feisty comeback. In the end, Velma got her way. Her basic training took place at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Velma served as a Transportation Sergeant in the Denver recruiting office, helping new recruits with transportation from home to their destination in the Marine Corps. Velma recalled one young man from a small town in Wyoming who needed to ride his horse to get to the nearest bus to reach his destination in the Marine Corps. A woman who served in the Marine Corps doing office work during World War II released a man for active duty for combat overseas. Velma felt honored to be one of those women who answered the call to e a Marine and free a man to fight. Women Marines are known as he smallest sorority in the biggest fraternity in the world. are, they say "the fewer, the prouder, the Women Marines." Velma once told a Denver Post reporter, When I meet someone who wants to intimidate me I stand up and say, Don't mess with me! I'm a Marine! And you know what? It still works." On 22, 1946 Velma was Honorably Discharged with the American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Velma's service in the Marines from 1943-1946 is one of her proudest accomplishments. Velma, we thank you for your service, you are truly a member of the greatest generation. Velma, Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, we love you with all our hearts and will dearly miss you.
