Marcus B Bond, born February 20, 1926 gained his wings on October 26, 2010 in Golden, Colorado. Marcus was 84. Tags: #West #Westernaire #Applewood #Club #Amigos #Americas #Jack #Central #Eldon #School #Navy #Westminster #Army #Corpsman #Washington #Marie #Brennan #Korean #Military #Kansas #Atomic #Commission #Industrial #Occupational #Kettering #University #Cincinnati #Medical #Western #York #Mountain #Basking #Jersey #Golden #Meadows #Bobbie #Pamela #Bond #Victoria #Sarah #Kelly #Heppe #Shannon #Missouri #Norman #Lutheran #Hospice #Wheatridge #Methodist #Ellis #Colo
Obituary: Dr. Marcus B. Bond was a brilliant and accomplished man. He was a son, brother, farmer, husband, soldier, doctor, father, grandfather, mentor, professor, author, fisherman, music lover, occupational medicine pioneer, son of the West, competitive skeet shooter, Westernaire Dad, one of the original Applewood Athletic Club board members, humanitarian, one of the founders of Amigos de las Americas, and whatever else he wanted to be. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to listen to Jack Benny and Bob and Ray. He believed that success is 95% perspiration and 5% inspiration and lived that philosophy to the fullest.

He was born on a farm in Central Missouri on 20, 1926, graduated from Eldon High School and entered the Navy in 1943 in their pre-med program. He completed his BA at Westminster at 19 years of age, became an Army Medical Corpsman and then graduated from Washington University with his M.D. in 1949. He married Marie Roberta Brennan that same year. For the rest of his life he would sum up his family life as saying that he made the living and Mom made the living worthwhile. When the Korean conflict began, he felt an obligation to serve since his education had been supported by the US Military. He volunteered and spent 10 months in a combat infantry division as a battalion surgeon and medical officer and was awarded a bronze star for valor in combat duty. He did not talk much about his service, saying only the popular MASH show just proved how luxurious the docs, all the way back at the MASH units, had it there.

In 1952 he was discharged from the Army and started a general medical and obstetrics private practice in Kansas City, MO, which he continued until 1957, when he became an Atomic Energy Commission fellow in Industrial Medicine (1957-59). By 1960 he had earned one of the first degrees in Occupational Medicine, having served as a resident in that specialty at the Kettering Laboratory, University of Cincinnati. He then became Medical Director of Western Electric in New York before moving to his beloved West to become Mountain Bells first Medical Director in 1962. In that position he traveled the mountain West, making many friends, impressing people with his devotion to healing and his skill in communicating with everyone from trade workers to highly technical scientists. He also deepened his love of the western lifestyle, enjoying boating and fishing.

He pioneered and developed the concept of occupational medicine at Mountain Bell and through his many professional medical organizations, assisted in the development of the elective program in Occupational Medicine at CU Medical school. He never stopped pushing for better, never stopped learning, traveling, teaching, and applying new science to new technologies to improve the delivery of medical care to his patients. In his last eight years with AT&T he was corporate medical director at their corporate headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Throughout the years, his family would often encounter people from across the west who fondly remembered him as their doctor or their parents doctor.

He retired from AT&T in 1981 and was a partner and consultant in an occupational medicine firm based in Golden, prior to finally retiring several years later. He then devoted his life to his family, listening to symphonic music, repeatedly winning the annual trophy for the biggest family-caught fish at Big Elk Meadows, reading, and dispensing wisdom and humor to those privileged to be part of his life. With his family by his side, Dr. Bond passed away on Oct 26, 2010 at the age of 84. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bobbie Bond, (Golden), his three daughters: Pamela Marie Bond (Golden), Victoria Bee Bond McElhone (Mickey) (Golden) and Sarah Ann Bond (Santa Fe); his two granddaughters, Kelly Marie McElhone Heppe (Ben) (Denver), and Shannon Alice McElhone (Denver), and various relatives from the area of the family farm in Missouri, including his nephew, Norman Lee Bond and his family. Donations are requested to be sent to Lutheran Collier Hospice 3210 Lutheran Parkway Wheatridge, CO 80033. Services will be held at Applewood Valley Methodist Church, 2035 Ellis Street, Golden, Colo. 80401 on , 30, at 2 p.m. with a reception immediately following service.

To quote Gayl, she cherished "animals, arts, classical music, Durrell, Gide, peace, poetry" and so much more. She always tried to look beyond the surface of things and wrote, "I adore the core, the essential." She devoted her life to raising her son, helping others, living ethically, being loyal to her friends, writing, poetry, books, music, movies, raising animals and to working hard with both diligence and attention to detail. She was full of pride, respect, wonder, love, awe, passion, intelligence and would have made Rosie the Riveter proud. She worked as a carpenter, painter, insulator, laborer, certified nursing assistant and more and strove to be the best she could at everything she did. She is survived by her son, Jesse Bond, of Fruita. A celebration of life will be held on 7th, at 4:00 p.m. at 1496 Powell Street, Fruita.
