Obituary: If her baby was a boy, Luella Birch planned to name him Donald Clyde. But when he came into the world on the birthday of the father of our country, 22, 1913, the doctor who delivered him declared, I name this baby George Washington Birch and what could she do but agree. Its a good thing George liked cherry pie, because that was what he got for many a birthday after that! And if he didn sign his name carefully, he could be mistaken for another president, George W. Bush! George was the second child of Oliver and Luella James Birch. He had three sisters, Olive, Arla, and Delores, and a brother, Jim. He was born and raised in Hyrum, a small town a few miles south of Logan, Utah, where his dad managed the lumber yard. As George got older he started working there, first by helping his dad unload lumber and bags of cement and later, when he was old enough, by driving a horse and wagon to deliver lumber all over Cache Valley to the farmers who used it to build barns and houses. As a teenager, he helped out his family by bringing home milk as pay for his job of milking 19 cows morning and night for one of the local dairy farmers. Although George graduated from high school in 1931, thanks to the help of his family, George was able to enroll at Utah State Agricultural (now Utah State University), where he majored in engineering. Georges years at the college were hard but good. He had excellent teachers and when he graduated in 1935, he was well prepared for his chosen career as a civil engineer. During the summer before his senior year in college, one of his professors found him working in a grocery store in Hyrum and was able to pull a few strings to get him a summer job working on the Hyrum Dam, which was then being built by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. Upon graduating, the Bureau hired George as a permanent employee. He was the only one of his graduating class to get a job right out of school. His first assignment with the Bureau was back on the Hyrum project, which was completed a few months later. that, the Bureau sent him to Moon Lake, in the High Uintas, where he worked until they had to shut down in because, at 22 degrees below zero, it was too cold for the equipment to work. He returned to Hyrum for a few days and then received word that he was being assigned to the Denver office, the main design office of the Bureau of Reclamation. A few days later he found himself arriving by bus in Denver during a bad snow storm. He would work for the Bureau out of the Denver office for 38 years, working primarily on irrigation projects. Moving to the big city of Denver was daunting for someone who had grown up in a small town, but George soon came to like living there. At first he was quite lonely but he made friends at work and began enjoying the social life in Denver. One of his social activities was going to dances at the Trocadero Ballroom at Elitch Gardens. The guys would buy tickets for ten cents a dance and then invite the girls to dance. One night he saw a girl across the room, asked her to dance, and she said, Can you dance? He said, Maybe you could teach me. That was the first of many dances together. Her name was Martha Kulik and soon George started escorting her to dances, impressing her by picking her up in a cab! found out that they worked almost across the street from each other and they started to spend their lunch hours together as well. He got to know her family. One thing led to another. He proposed. She accepted and they were married on 26, 1938 in her parents home. On 7, 1941, George and Martha took Marthas mother to a movie at the Denham Theater in Denver. When they came out of the theater, newspaper boys were calling out Extra! Extra! Pearl Harbor Bombed! The world and the course of their lives changed that day. George enlisted in the U. S. Navy as an officer and was assigned to the 40th Construction Battalion (the Seabees). rigorous basic training in Rhode Island, he shipped out with his battalion for the South Pacific. served at Espirito Santo, the New Hebrides, New Guinea, Los Negros, the Admiralty Islands, New Caledonia, Saipan, and Okinawa. did all sorts of construction work but their main responsibility was to design and build air strips for the Navy bombers. As the war wore down, Georges unit was stationed on the island of Okinawa, preparing for the invasion of Japan. As part of his responsibilities, George was involved in the planning for the invasion, realizing that the loss of life on both sides would be severe. There was some talk of a new and very destructive weapon, but no real information about it. Then one day, when a huge number of planes took off from the airstrip they had built, they realized that something big was going on. learned of the amazing new weapon, the atom bomb, from the returning pilots. George got to see some of the first pictures of the aftermath of the bomb immediately after they were developed at their base. In 1946, George was discharged from the Navy and returned home to Denver. He went back to his job at the Bureau. Life went back to normal. George and Martha moved into a new little house they built right behind the house where Martha had grown up and where her mother and brother Jack were living. Her sister Julie and her family lived in the house next door. In continued... |
