Obituary: CLAUDE HAROLD BELISLE May 21, 1919 - 17, 2016 Claude was born in the logging woods in Parsons, Tennessee on May 21, 1919. He was told by his parents Everett Belisle and Mattie DePriest Belisle that there was a very unusual big frost the night in May that he was born. His parents were farmers and they lived in several different communities around Tennessee. Based upon that experience, Claude decided he did not want to become a farmer, so after graduating from high school he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). He spent two years in the CCC, and part of the time attended Bethel in McKinsey, Tennessee. He then joined the U.S. Navy and the next 25 years of his life read like a travelogue. While in the U.S. Navy, he served aboard several different kinds of ships, from carriers to destroyers, serving as an aircraft mechanic. The first combat he saw was in North Africa. Early during World War II, he went to the Pacific fleet and served aboard the U.S.S. Wasp, an aircraft carrier. The Wasp was sunk in of 1942 at Guadalcanal by a Japanese submarine, but fortunately for Claude, he had transferred to the U.S.S. Essex. A reunion of the U.S.S. Wasp survivors was held every year, and he attended many of them. During his military service, Claude served during WW II, and the Korean and Viet Nam wars, and received many citations and medals. In 1945 Claude left the U.S.S. Essex and returned to the U.S.A. where he married Juanita B. Harbinson, and took her back to San Diego, CA with him. He jokingly told his wife that his Chief in the U.S. Navy told him that if you were supposed to have a wife, you would have been issued one in boot camp. In the next few months, he and Juanita lived in several California locations, and then he had to go back overseas on the U.S.S. Bennington where he remained until after the war was over. During that time, Juanita returned to Tennessee, where his first son Harold was born. When his enlistment was up, he spent a few months in Tennessee and then joined the U.S. Navy again because he could not find a job. then lived in South Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, and California. His second son, Michael, was born in Virginia and his daughter Teena was born in California. Finally, they ended up in Hawaii, where he served as a flight engineer for Constellation aircraft and spent about half of his time on Midway Island flying radar patrol from Midway to the Aleutian Islands. moved to Pueblo, CO in 1962, where he served as a U.S. Navy recruiter for about 3 1/2 years. He then retired from the U.S. Navy, and began working in his 17 year second career as a letter carrier for the Post Office in Pueblo, CO. Claude was baptized in the Church of Christ when he was about 15 years old, in Sycamore Landing, Tennessee. Later, at different times his whole family was baptized and his father preached for the Church of Christ. While in Pueblo, CO, Claude and his family were members of the Church of Christ, and he served as a Deacon, Minister of Missions, and Minister of Benevolence. The things that Claude cherished most in life were his wife, family, church, military service and postal service. He also loved big game hunting and fishing. He had a wonderful ability to connect with people quickly and build lasting relationships. Claudes wife of 62 years preceded him in death on 27, 2007. He is survived by two sons, Harold and his wife Joyce of Beaverton, Oregon, and Michael of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Teena Pierce and her husband Allan of Sterling, Colorado; and four grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Larry K. Belisle of Lima, Ohio. services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on , 20, 2016 at Adrian Comer Garden Chapel, located at 2710 N. Elizabeth St., Pueblo, CO 81003. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made through the funeral home to Sangre de Cristo Hospice. Internment will be in Dickson, Tennessee. under the direction of Adrian-Comer , Pueblo, CO. |
