Obituary: Percy Whitechurch Brower, Jr., died at home in Mountain Brook, Alabama, from complications associated with Parkinsons disease. He is survived by his daughter Nancy English Brower (Russell M. Borman), stepdaughter Lucile Arn Chappell Tutwiler (Temple W., III), stepson Samuel Marcus Chappell III (Nancy), and the following eight step-grandchildren: Jacob S. Borman; Lucile T. Hodas (Frank), Temple W. Tutwiler, IV (Allyson) & Elisabeth B. Tutwiler; and Leonore A. Chappell, Elisabeth B. Chappell, Mariah B. Chappell & Helena B. Chappell. He was preceded in death by his father Percy Whitechurch Brower, Sr., his mother Dorothy Morey Lum Brower, his sister Nancy English Brower Beeler, and his wife of over 53 years Elisabeth (Betty) Arn Clark Brower. Percy was born on 31, 1923, at St. Vincents Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, and called Birmingham home for his entire life. graduating from Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1941, he attended Vanderbilt University and graduated in 1946 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946, achieving the rank of second lieutenant. his service in the Marine Corps, Percy worked first as a salesman for one of his fathers businesses, the W. P. Ballard , and then as the general manager of another one, the Swiss Laundry . In 1950, he became the majority owner and president of his fathers main business, The Domestic Laundry, which was located at 501 24th Street South and provided laundry delivery services to homes in the Birmingham area. Anticipating the decline in demand for home-delivery laundry services, Percy in 1953 founded the Clean Linen Service and in 1968 replaced The Domestic Laundry with the Clean Uniform Service . The linen and uniform rental services eventually became known together as Clean Rental Services. In 1978, Percy sold Clean Rental Services to the Unitog of Kansas City. Percy served on the Board of Directors of SouthTrust Bank of Alabama (formerly, Birmingham Trust National Bank) from 1960 to 1988. In 1979, he served as co-chairman of the local United Way. In the 1970s, he helped raise funds for the Republican Party. Percy was, for several years in the 1960s and 1970s, the president of the Board of Trustees of Highlands School in Mountain Brook. As chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Brooke Hill School in Birmingham, he oversaw its merger in 1975 with the Birmingham University School and subsequently served as the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the merged institution, The Altamont School. Percy was a member of the Rebel Chapter of the Young Presidents Organization, the Garden of the Gods Club in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the Beaux-Arts Krewe, the Redstone Club, Birmingham Country Club, and Mountain Brook Club, having served as its president in 1979. he retired, he spent many years traveling with his wife Betty. He especially loved spending time at their cabin on Rumble Creek in Condon, Montana, playing tennis, and reading. The family would like to thank Percys caregivers, Finnisse Williams, Benita Bibb, and Tim Bibb, for their devoted care and attention. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial gifts to UAB Parkinson Disease Research, 350E Sparks , 1530 3rd Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35294-0017. Percy will be interred in the columbarium at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in a private service. The family will receive friends and family at Mountain Brook Club from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. on , 3, 2016. |
