Obituary: Supplication O can you pray in urban gloom, With Paradise, outside in bloom? Have you never at the close Of lingering day sought calm repose Among the supplicating pines, Where, plaintively, the Shepherd twines His vespers on the evening air; And trembling Aspens seem at prayer? O have you never risen yet Beside the rushy rivulet, And watched God with the dawn conspire To set your flaming soul a-fire? O you who grope and pray in fear, Within the mouldered atmosphere Of dusty naves-know not was Christ Who scourged the temple with the lash- And when He prayed went to the hills To worship with the daffodils? ~Rees Frazier ________________________________ Wheatley George Bucher In the song of life, Wheatley George Bucher was surely the composer. A very observant man who would rather spend his time creating than talking, Wheatley preferred to live in a world of harmony where everything around him made sense. In fact, he would rather be amongst the trees and wildlife than anywhere else. A free spirit, Wheatley believed that actions definitely spoke for themselves. He seemed to know what fit and what didn fit in everything he did. Wheatley perceived that all of lifes possibilities were open to him, yet he lived with a definite sense of purpose. He was a man who was always ready to share his creations and explorations with those around him. His parents were Louis James Bucher and Mary Elizabeth Gooch (Bucher). Wheatley was raised in Bellingham, Washington. As a young child, Wheatley was optimistic in his outlook. He sought out the possibilities in a given situation and looked for ways to apply his creative energies. Wheatley rarely called attention to himself, but when he did speak out his message was clearly understood by those around him. Early on in his family relationships, Wheatley showed that he was a tolerant and flexible person and he got along fairly well with everyone. He was raised as an only child, but he did have three half-siblings. He had a sister, Rae Berry, and two brothers, Wilfred and Ted Bucher. He was a calm and playful child who was adaptable to any situation. As he was growing up, Wheatley developed into a person who enjoyed physically doing things. He took pleasure in using his hands in order to create, whether it was working with building kits or exploring the outdoors. Wheatleys memorable achievements as a young man included getting his drivers license as a young adult. It was the highlight of his life at the time, and his love for driving remained with him throughout his life. Early on in his school years, Wheatley showed an interest in learning, especially when it came to subjects such as mechanical arts and physics. At times, school learning did not provide Wheatley with sufficient challenges, but being an avid reader he could often be lost in a book well above his grade level. He graduated from Bellingham High School in 1948. Those who didn know Wheatley well might not view him as being an outgoing person. Those who called him their friend knew differently. Wheatley was shy and sensitive, a person who never forced his opinions and values on others. Close friends knew that his kindness was unmatched, and once you became a friend of Wheatleys you understood how true a friend he could be. While growing up, one of his best friends was Roy Pfluger. Later in life, he remained friends with Roy. A person who was sensitive to others feelings, modest and tolerant, Wheatley had the ability to become completely devoted to another when that affection was returned. On 15, 1950, Wheatley exchanged wedding vows with his high school sweetheart, Catherine LaVon Frazier, in Catherines fathers home in Bellingham. Wheatley was exceptionally sympathetic and compassionate when it came to his children. These emotional bonds made him as much playmate as parent. He gave his family unconditional love and kindness, sharing his artistic nature by turning everyday events into creative play. Wheatley was blessed with three children, son William Bucher, daughter Cathy Shuman, and son Steve Bucher. Wheatley and LaVon were also blessed with three grandchildren, Aaron Shuman, Luke Shuman, and Mandy Yan. Wheatley found ways to enjoy what he did for a living. He worked hard and did his best to succeed every day. His primary occupation was electronic technician. He was employed for forty years with the Boeing Aerospace . Wheatley tended to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done without imposing his will on others. He loved his work and was excited to share his stories of the air flight simulator he assisted with, and was proud of his input with developing navigation equipment that was far ahead of its time. Wheatley was an Army veteran. He was in the service for two years during the Korean conflict. Through his hard work and dedication, he achieved the rank of corporal. Wheatleys fellow soldiers saw him as a brother in arms, and knew that he was as much a part of their family as their loved ones back home. Wheatley enjoyed his leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. His favorite pursuits were hiking, traveling, and the great outdoors. Wheatley was content to enjoy his hobbies alone but was also willing to share his interests with others and did so often. He was relaxed in his approach to his leisure time because he wanted to savor the present moment. Throughout this life, Wheatley was a doer and was always actively involved in professional and community organizations. Throughout his later years, he was an active member of the High-Lakers Club, promoting high lake trout fishing and preserving the environment. He also was a troop leader in his sons Boy Scout troop and a major contributor to the Trips and continued... |

Obituary: LaVon Frazier Bucher LaVon was born 6, 1929 on a farm south of Wallace, Kansas to Rees and Marie (Wiley) Frazier. She came into a country soon reeling from the Great Depression (1929-1931) and a place soon decimated by drought. (Dust Bowl - 1930-1940) LaVon was a beloved addition to a large, extended family: parents, Great and Grand parents and innumerable Frazier-Wiley-Mendenhall-Hill aunts, uncles and cousins! Work was hard to find, so the first 6 years of her life LaVon was a nomad with Rees and Marie. moved from small towns to farms, to the mountains of Wyoming and in 1933 to rural Arkansas. There on a small farm near Cherokee City, sister Lynn was born 3, 1934. When she was 6 weeks old, the Frazier-Bowman clan of 12 packed up to head west where work was to be had. Their first stop was in Idaho near Grandpa Elmer Fraziers brother, Harvey. LaVon started school there. Work in the area was seasonal and low-paying, however, so in 1935 they moved to Bellingham where another of Elmers brothers, John, lived. In Bellingham they lived temporarily with Uncle John, but soon found lodging with Rita Newman on 16th Street. While there, Vane, Nadine and Ann were born. In 1940, needing more space and a place to grow some of their own food, they moved to a small farm near Ferndale on the Paradise Road. In 1942 Jon was born. the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Rees enlisted in the Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees). He spent much of his enlistment in the South Pacific. Marie found she could not manage her 6 young kids and farm animals alone, so in 1944 she moved the family to a house at 2104 McKenzie, South Bellingham. In 1950 the family moved from there to their last Bellingham home at 1301 24th Street. LaVon started school in Payette, Idaho and graduated from Bellingham High School. In between were Lowell Elementary, Ferndale public schools and Fairhaven Junior High. She always loved learning and was an excellent student. Maybe thats why she chose to become an elementary school teacher-a career she followed for 20 years. Being the eldest of 6 siblings was a challenging role, but LaVon managed it with incredible tolerance and love. How many dirty diapers, runny noses and scraped knees can you help tend without resenting your younger siblings? LaVon never seemed to, and for the rest of her life many, many family members, friends and neighbors were the recipients of her loving care and concern. LaVon pursued many interests. She loved to read for knowledge and pleasure. She gardened, crocheted, created ceramics, kept a beautiful home and yard and frequently hosted family gatherings. It was always a treat to taste her latest recipe and relax in her welcoming home with loving family. LaVon was a mentor and cheerleader to her siblings, students and children as well as a strong, loving daughter and friend. don come any better! Lovingly, Ann |
