Obituary: A great mans whistle went silent on 29, 2014, but his courageous and never-give-up approach to facing cancer remains strong in the hearts and memories of the many his life touched. Jed W. Bauermeister was the first child born to Donald and Lois Jeanene Bauermeister at Kennewick General Hospital in Kennewick, Washington on 20, 1956. His first name was intentionally kept simple given such a long last name. However, as the story goes, in those days Dr. DeBit wouldn allow Jed to be released from the hospital without a middle initial to go with his one syllable first name, so a W was added. It was a nice place holder and more importantly, the ticket out. Jed grew up on the family farm near Basin City, Washington and spent his school years in the North Franklin School District. He graduated from Connell High School in 1974. Jed was active in football, basketball, and baseball and was the center on the Eagle football team that placed 2nd at state his senior year of high school. Jed was also involved in 4-H and FFA, regularly showing his steers in the Benton-Franklin Fair. He had a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. Jed enjoyed many adventures and great times with them. He went on to college and graduated from Washington State University in the spring of 1978 with a General Agriculture degree. GO COUGS!!! He got through college as quickly as he could in order to return to work on the family farm. Jed was inspired by his pork production professor, and started Bauermeister Schwein the following spring. Through this business, he provided wiener pigs and feed for hundreds of area 4-H and FFA projects. Never one to be idle, Jed also started J&C Custom Harvesting and later Bauermeister Combining with his brother Chet. He purchased his first International Harvester combine in 1980. The brothers later added a custom hauling component to their business, transporting locally grown fruit and vegetables to packing plants throughout central Washington. In the winter of 1979 Jed got the itch to become a sports referee. His first love was baseball, but it unfortunately conflicted with spring farming. Basketball was a better fit for his farming schedule, so he joined the Tri-Cities Sports Officials Board and began to referee girls basketball. As he affectionately liked to describe it, he got paid to chase girls! Refereeing was more than a hobby or vocation for Jed. He was passionate about doing the best job possible. First and foremost, he believed he was doing this work for the benefit of the student athletes playing the game. Anything he earned was a bonus. Jed poured his heart into understanding the nuances of the game, and was known for offering constructive feedback and mentoring. While he enjoyed the opportunity to work at the local level, and even progressed to working state tournament matchups, Jed had two even greater opportunities that came as a result of being a basketball ref. The first one came in 1983 when he met his future wife at a basketball meeting. The second occurred just this 2013-2014 basketball season when he got to ref with and mentor his own daughter during her first year as a referee. Jed took time out of his busy reffing schedule on 31, 1987 to marry his bride and life partner, Valorie Pierce. celebrated their 27th anniversary earlier this year. The couple welcomed their daughter, Alyssa Kaye Bauermeister, in , 1990. Jed was very involved in his greater community. This included 28 years as a volunteer firefighter with the Franklin Fire District #4; member of the Class V Agriculture and Forestry Education Foundation program; the Washington Pork Producers (past president and Washington State Pork All-American); the Franklin Cattlemans Association; and the Benton-Franklin Fair Market Stock Committee. Basketball wasn the only thing Jed refereed. He also had the distinction and honor of being the head referee for the world famous Combine Demolition Derby held annually in Lind, Washington for 24 of the derbys 27 years. He only missed when absolutely necessary, like when his daughter graduated from high school, he took a trip with our foreign exchange student, and then due to illness this year. Jed also worked for a variety of local fertilizer companies during harvestings off seasons. He started working at Liberty Christian School in 2000. Jed described this job as one that involved helping raise 400+ kids and a bunch of grass in the middle of Richland. Those who knew Jed and his work ethic knew it was so much more than that. For Jed, working at Liberty was a labor of love, an offering of his commitment to his Lord. He worked tirelessly to keep the facilities and grounds maintained for the benefit of the students and staff. More importantly, he forged many lifelong friendships while he was there. He loved being a part of the coaching staff for the Patriot football team for 7 years. Two highlights included the privilege of working with the guys who came through the program and joining the team in their state championship run in 2012. Jed noted that it only took 39 years to redeem his own high school teams 2nd place finish, and he was privileged to be a part of a great program. Jed spent the last 10 months doing the many things he loved and a few that he knew others loved. The latter category involved many trips to various destinations around the United States. He liked the destinations, but was not overly fond of the process of getting there. He got to spend several weeks returning to his farming roots by harvesting wheat and corn for a custom harvesting outfit out of Hermiston, Oregon. He gladly overlooked the color of the machinery for the thrill of spending long hours going round and round in a field. He also was privileged to work a final season as a basketball official. This included working continued... |
